running backs coach and now finds himselfas head coach once more. Some other inter-esting new coaches to follow are JimShowfety, who takes over Northview after avery successful one-year stint at Chamblee;Chip Lindsey, the former offensive coordina-tor of Hoover (Ala.) who brings his high-fly-ing passing attack to Lassiter; and Lindsey’sformer boss at Hoover, Rush Propst, whotakes over at Colquitt County.

STIFF COMPETITION …Coaches were not the only facet of

Georgia high-school football in transition –teams were as well. If Class 5A’s Region 1 wasa beast before, it is undoubtedly Godzilla nowthat Northside-Warner Robins has joined theregion. The two-time defending Class 4Achamp—currently riding a 30-game winstreak—will now participate in the state’slargest classification and must compete withthe likes of Valdosta, Coffee, Tift County andreigning 5A champion Lowndes just to makethe playoffs. This is familiar territory for theWar Eagles, however, as they made a couple ofappearances in the state semifinals when theyformerly competed against the big boys.

Class 5A’s Region 7 will not feel as if theyshould take a back seat to anyone, as NorthFulton’s Chattahoochee and Northivew join aregion already populated by North Gwinnett,Peachtree Ridge and Norcross. And Westminster

The 2008 high-school football season isfinally ready to kick off in Georgia, but

the action off the field has been non-stop sincethe end of last season. Over 100 schools hireda new coach this past offseason, as either theirformer coach was fired, resigned, retired orleft for another school. Some of the state’sbiggest names in coaching have decided tomove to another school or walk away from thegame. After compiling 219 wins in 24 seasonsat McEachern (236 wins in 27 seasons over-all), Jimmy Dorsey decided to retire fromcoaching (but remains the school’s athleticdirector), while Ed Pilcher left ThomasCounty Central and the five state champi-onships he won there behind to become thenew head coach of Bainbridge.

The sidelines of Coweta Field will notlook the same this season because, for the firsttime since 1989, Danny Cronic will not beroaming them. The 29-year veteran of coachinghigh-school football in Georgia decided toretire. Tim McFarlin left Roswell, winning 32games over the last three seasons, including ashare of the state title in 2006, and never havinga losing season in his 10 years as head coach. Also stepping away is Jimmy Chupp fromGreater Atlanta Christian; in nine seasons atGAC, he averaged nearly 10 wins per seasonand reached the state championship game once.

Class 4A state runner-up Ware Countyno longer has Dan Ragle at the helm of theirprogram, so it will be interesting to see howthe Gators’ new head coach John Stephenshandles one of the state’s most talented teams.Stephens is no rookie—his first head coach-ing job came back in 1969—but he has onlysix winning seasons in his 20-plus years ofcoaching. He retired in 2001, but later cameout of retirement to become Ware County’s

County hosts Columbia (Fla.) one weekbefore visiting Hoover (Ala.).

A lot of happenings took place betweenthe end of the last football season up untilnow, as Georgia high-school football gets big-ger and bigger every year. And thanks to theU.S. Army/Corky Kell Classic, now is the timefor the players on the field to put their markson the 2008 season.

fought many battles as a former member ofClass 3A, so a move down to 2A should be abreeze, right? Well, not when their new Region 6mates include the two teams that played for lastyear’s 2A state title in Buford and Lovett.

The in-state competition will be hotlycontested, but this year also offers a slew ofgames pitting Georgia teams against top com-petition from around the country. NorthGwinnett will play one of the better teams inthe country when they host Byrnes (S.C.), ateam that many consider to be the best inAmerica. The game is a part of theNational Football Classic which alsofeatures a matchup between CentralGwinnett and Mainland (Fla.).Northside-Warner Robins willfind out how they stack upagainst the nation’s best whenBooker T. SCORE ATLANTA I 05CKCU.S. ARMY/CORKY KELL CLASSICCKC04 I SCORE ATLANTA

Etowah vs. Starr’s Mill11:45 a.m.

The last time Etowah took the field, the scrappy Eagles put a realscare into one of the most talented teams in the entire state. Etowah tooka narrow 21-19 loss to Norcross in the first round of the playoffs lastNovember, but the fact that the No. 4-seeded Eagles could hang with theloaded Blue Devils bodes well for the future. Head coach Bill Stewartreturns for his third year at the helm of Etowah football, having taken theprogram to the postseason in each of his two years; that’s no small featconsidering the Eagles hadn’t been there since 1994. Heading into the2008 season, junior quarterback James Harris, injured most of last year,is back to lead the Eagles’ veer offense.

Starr’s Mill, on the other hand, is trying to figure out howtheir usually postseason-bound football team finished the 2007 cam-paign with a middling 5-5 record. One look at the schedule last sea-son, however, and that becomes clear; all five losses came to play-off teams in the Panthers’ classification of 4A, and three of thoseteams (including Cherokee, who beat the Panthers at last year’sClassic) reached the second round. Starr’s Mill has a star ondefense in linebacker Stephen Roberts, who is beginning to accumu-late a nice list of offers from top schools around the country. If theoffense stalls, the team can rely on an excellent kicking game; sen-ior Chris Ward is widely regarded as the nation’s best punter andhas committed to N.C. State.

Brookwood vs. Walton2:30 p.m.

“Inexperience” is the key word this season for the Broncos, wholose almost every starter on both sides of the ball from last year’s 9-3team. Last season, led by running back Kenny Miles (now at SouthCarolina) and a number of other talented seniors, Brookwood lost 17-3 tocounty rival North Gwinnett in the second round of the playoffs. TheBroncos lost their opener at the Classic last year by a score of 10-7 toRoswell, but head coach Mark Crews and company will try to get thisseason started off the right way with a win in the Dome. Offensive tack-le Kellen Williams, an Alabama commit, will try to pave the way for therunning game despite the departure of Miles.

Walton can relate to Brookwood’s exodus of talent due to gradu-ation, but like the Broncos, the Raiders still have a stable of good play-ers. Also a playoff victim of North Gwinnett (Walton lost 31-7 to theBulldogs in the semifinals), the Raiders lose defensive end ChaseThomas (Stanford) and starting quarterback Braden Theobald, but stillhave star defensive back/receiver Price Garrett and quarterback RayRayburn, who split time with Theobald last season. Kyle Woestmann is ajunior defensive tackle who is getting some attention, and will anchor therun defense. Head coach Ed Dudley is entering his 14th season at Waltonand has amassed 99 wins at the Marietta school. He’ll have to buck a his-torical trend to get No. 100 at Saturday’s Classic, however; Walton is 1-6 all time in the Dome.

Norcross vs. Camden County5:30 p.m.

This promises to be an exhilarating matchup, as both teams enterthe Dome with top-five preseason rankings (GPB/Score Atlanta). For thepast two seasons, Keith Maloof has coached the No. 5-ranked Blue Devilsto a combined regular-season record of 19-1; however, a semifinal-roundappearance has still eluded the Gwinnett County powerhouse. This mightbe the year that changes thanks to a tremendous array of talent on bothsides of the ball. Running back D.J. Adams, a Maryland commit, rackedup 1,462 rushing yards and 11 touchdowns in 2007. Quarterback CharlesKing, a senior, certainly has good genes: cousin Shaun played in the NFLfor the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Arizona Cardinals. And make sure tokeep your eye on Prince Kent, the four-star athlete (Rivals.com) who hascommitted to play at Miami.

Camden County, with a No. 3-ranking, is not without its own shareof talent, though. After head coach Jeff Herron took over in 2000, theteam has won at least 10 games in the past seven seasons, whichincludes a state championship in 2003 and a state semifinal appearancein 2007. Much of last year’s squad returns, including wide receiverDeAngelo Smith, a South Carolina commit that caught eight touchdownpasses last season, and speedy running back Greg Baker. On defense, the powerful Marquevious Myers is a sight that Norcross’ offense will beseeing plenty of. Even ESPN has been paying attention: in its FAB 50, theWildcats were ranked No. 21 in the nation.

Grayson vs. McEachern 8:30 p.m.

It’s safe to say that head coach Mickey Conn has done a fabulousjob in Grayson’s short existence. Since 2000 when the school fielded itsfirst team, the Rams have only had one losing record (4-6, 2005) andsurprised many last season by reaching the Elite Eight, destroyingChattahoochee and Norcross before falling to Camden County. The Ramsare expected to be able to compete once again this year, earning a No.10 preseason ranking. Though the team replaces a lot of talent, TylerHorne is back at starting quarterback and showed a ton of poise andmaturity in 2007, especially in the postseason. Mammoth junior ShawnGreen also returns to anchor a defense that allowed just 11.5 points pergame and recorded four shutouts.

As for McEachern, the Indians will be kicking off a new era.Longtime head coach Jimmy Dorsey, the man in charge from 1984-2007,will no longer be on the sidelines. Instead, it will be Kyle Hockman whowill try to turn the Indians around after they suffered their first losingseason in 24 years in ’07. Hockman arrives at McEachern after two suc-cessful years as head coach at Campbell. The coaching staff and fansalike were impressed with senior quarterback Matt Collins’s progressionthroughout the spring and summer, and he will have several skilledreceivers to throw to. The big name on offense is Terrell Mitchell, a tightend who has already received interest from schools such as Auburn,South Carolina and West Virginia.
