Preface

It was during the Fall of 2008

that I heard about the

impending demolition of the old

Clinton Junior High School.

While I made a mental note that

this was a subject worthy of

documenting I failed to keep up

with the date the demolition

was to take place. Shortly

before Thanksgiving the

realization hit me that the end

was near that time was running

out.

It was fortunate for me that

even demolitions take a holiday.

D u r i n g t h e e x t e n d e dThanksgiving weekend, the

work halted providing the

perfect opportunity to slip in

and perform my work.

The actual shooting of this

project was done at rapid pace

and without a tripod. I suppose

the adrenalin rush of performing

a semi-criminal act made me

hurry quicker than I normally

would. To give the reader the

understanding of the tempo

order I put a time stamp

underneath each picture.

The goal of this book is twofold.The first is to document the last

days of this school for posterity.

This building played such an

important role in the lives of the

community and its citizens and

undoubtedly somebody,

somewhere would like to know

what its faced looked like beforethe lid was closed on the coffin.

Secondly this is an artistic

endeavor. We look at the ruins

of ancient civilizations, such as

found in Egypt, England or

South America as romantic and

beautiful be we look at the ruins

around us as mundane and ugly.

Hopefully this work triggers

within you the feelings of

sentiment and wonder.

Portraits of our older generation

resonate strongly with character

and dignity. The wrinkles and

liver spots speak of a lifetime of toil and struggle, of pleasure

and pain, of gain and loss. Like

the faces of our elderly, these

buildings communicate the

same through aged features. It

is the goal of the artists to make

people stop and reflect.

Whether or not you ever gracedthe halls of this school, it is my

hope that these pictures

resonate with you.

Pantagraph Unknown Date

Industrial Arts Department De-

stroyed

High School Damaged By Fire Early Saturday

The Industrial Arts Department of the Clinton

Community Highs School was badly damaged

by fire of undetermined origin which gutted

the interior of the building early Saturday

morning.

The fire was spotted in the north section of

the building, located across the street from

the Fine Arts Center, at approximately 3 a. m.

by city patrolman James Rueger who notified

the radio operator at the county jail, Dean

Cromwell, who in turn called the fire depart-

ment. The Clinton Fire department responded

quickly, taking quick action to confine the fire

to the one department. Fire Chief Haskell

Bohn give all credit to the firemen. Also, to

the aerial ladder truck, without which it would

have been almost impossible to control the

blaze.

…Estimation of fire damage was placed be-

tween 50,000 and $75,000.

School Survey Team Reports

New High School Plan Sug-

gested

…The survey team suggests that the Board

with the assistance and the counsel of the

superintendent, the professional staff and the

Advisory Council consider a new four year

high school site and building. This should

include a site of 40 acres with suitable space

for space for out of door physical education,

athletics and band activities. Probably any

site so selected would be out of the city; how-

ever, it was recommended that the careful

consideration be given to accessibility, to

limit the need for transportation, and to

safety for “walkers”.

Referendum For New High

School.

Voters in Clinton Community Unit 15 School District will

go to the polls Saturday, February 3, to decide

whither a new high school is to be built; the

old west building as the present Junior-Senior

High school is razed and the ground be pre-

pared for physical education classes for aMiddle School (grades six, seven, and eight):

and the remainder of the present building will

be altered to fit the needs of a middle school.

School Referendum Defeated

The Clinton Unit School District No. 15 build-

ing bond referendum was soundly defeated inevery precinct Saturday. The referendum

asked for $2.3 million for the purpose of build-

ing a new four=year high school and the nec-

essary remodeling of the present building for

junior high school and the razing of the old

west building which had been condemned.

There was a total of 2,636 votes cast in all

precincts with an even 1,000 “yes” votes;

1,599 “no” votes. And 37 spoiled ballots




Second Loss

Clinton Building Bonds Defeated.

…The present high school, constructed in

1908 and with additions build in 1920 and

1956, was condemned last summer as unsafe

by state school officials.

In addition to the outdated buildings, school

officials have cited a growing enrolled as an-other need for the building program.


Rural “No” Vote Wins

School Bond Issue Defeated

…In comparing the voting Saturday with that

of October 21, when the referendum was first

offered…The “Yes” faction picked up 259votes, and the “No” faction lost 69 votes. The

number of spoiled ballots was down one,

from 37 to 36.

Although the weather was Saturday was fa-

vorable, only an additional 189 persons made

it to the polls.

Voters Approve New High

School

“CLINTON DOES CARE” chanted Clinton high school

students this morning as they poured onto the square in

the giant all-school rally following a general assembly at

the high school.

The mass celebration marked the district

voters’ approval in a fourth referendum for a

bond issue to build a new high school build-ing.

A sunny, brisk October day, Tuesday, October

7, brought out a record number of voters to

sweep a long-standing issue to decisive vic-

tory.

The “yes” votes outnumbered the “no votes in

the $2.5 million bond referendum by a total of

2,169 to 1,332. The 3,501 votes cast yesterday

represent almost 70% of the registered votes

in the school district and was the largest num-

ber of votes cast in the four times the bond

issue was presented to voters.

Making Way for the New

The West Building of the Clinton Community

High School has started to become a thing of

the past as the wreckers take to it with their

heavy equipment. The old school, built in

1907, is being removed to make room for a

new, $62900 steel building housing eight

classrooms. The steel building is to be open

for use this fall and until a new high school iscomplete by the autumn of 1971.



The older we get, the more

we realize that life is

transitory. I suppose that is

something we all conclude,

granted we live long enough

to reach that conclusion.

Theologians, philosophers

and scientists remind us that

nothing, at least of this

physical existence, lasts

forever. This simple fact

becomes very real to a

photographer. How often

we drive past a scene

thinking that we will shoot

that subject at a later date.

There are the excuses we

give: the lighting is not very

good , the weather could be

better or we are short on

time. But with hesitation

comes loss. Buildings are

demolished, old cars sold,

and barns blown down

before we get back to take

the picture. Forever lost are

those opportunities because

we assume they would exist

forever. Photographers are

not the only ones to make

t h o s e a s s u m p t i o n s .

As a relative newcomer to

Clinton, IL, I have no

memories or experiences

relating to this school. Yet,

with the news of its

destruction ,I knew I had to

photograph the school. Theday I entered the scene, the

main gymnasium was

already mostly gone.

Hurriedly, I went from room

to room, hallway to hallway

snapping shots. It was not a

d i s a p p o i n t m e n t .

This school was a source of

many good memories for

the children who passed

through these halls into

adulthood. Very few people

had the privileged to see

CJH go through the stages

of death and burial and I am

thankful that I was one of

them. This folio has scenes

of beauty combined with

great sadness. In some ways

this building serves as a

metaphor for our own lives.

For our days are numbered

just as it was for Clinton

Junior High, which was one

of the most solid of

structures.
