JUST THE FACTS: • Measha Brueggergosman and pianist Justus Zeyen interpret well- and little-known songs of Duparc, De Falla, Schubert, Hahn, Liszt, and others chosen for their soulful depth, variety, and beauty. Against the velvet of this music, Measha glitters like the star she is.

• Measha Brueggergosman about Night and Dreams: “We wanted something that was languid, sexy, romantic, different. Also, it’s repertoire that gives me the chance to really let go.”

• She projects drama, passion, comedy, or charm as needed in any of the languages she speaks, essential for a lieder and chanson singer who must make words come alive with meaning, color, and esprit as well as vocal quality.

JUST THE FACTS: • The Ponticello Quartet was founded in Montreal in 2003. Friends in life and partners in music, four cellists unite to contribute to music in a new and compelling way. To fulfill their mission, they each have a major asset: their instrument. Deeply expressive, the cello induces powerful feelings and emotions that, when multiplied by four, resonate in ways unsuspected by the listener. In the very beginning, the Ponticello Quartet’s success was already unquestionable, having been awarded a gold medal as well as the Excellence Prize at the Festival de Musique du Royaume in Saguenay-Lac-St-Jean. In February of 2007, the quartet was awarded the Prize for Emerging Artists by the Network of Promoters of the Montreal Boroughs (REDICAM) at the Bourse RIDEAU, 20th edition. The growing interest the ensemble generates has been contagiously catching on, even overseas. Notably, the quartet was invited to perform in Switzerland at the Usinesonore Festival in the spring of 2008.

• The Ponticello Quartet’s repertoire is diverse and shows the versatility of its interprets. Out of their concern to enlarge the contemporary repertoire for cello quartet, the group have acted in partnership with the Ensemble Contemporain de Montréal + for the commission of Canadian compositions. The ensemble also has for mission to promote the cello to its enthusiasts. Every year, it organises cello ensemble workshops for cellist of all ages and skill level. The high level of energy these musicians emanate during live performances is undeniable. As they are stimulated by the pleasure of playing together and communicating their passion with enthusiasm, they bring to light all the beauty of the repertoire they interpret without ever letting its complexity show through.

COMPOSER: Velitchka Yotcheva (And Cello Octet)

TITLE: I cellisti CATALOGUE #: XXICD21597

GC: 11

BAR CODE:

7 220 56 15972 2

PRICE CODE: NA FILE: Classical

ORDER DUE: January 21, 2010 RELEASE DATE: February 9, 2010

JUST THE FACTS: • I Cellisti is an instrumental group comprised of eight cellists – the core of the orchestra, hence the name – plus a piano and a solo cello. This recording constitutes an essential jumping-off point for the ensemble, recapturing their first concert presented during the 2007-2008 season of the Société de Musique de Chambre de Montréal. Founded by Cellist Velitchka Yotcheva, the ensemble consists for the most part of her current or past pupils, conferring to her endeavor an openly didactic vocation. Velitchka Yotcheva, frequently accompanied at the piano by Patrice Laré – a full-fledged member of I Cellisti – has a considerable discography in her own right, in which we find Bach’s Six Suites for Unaccompanied Cello, a grouping of duet sonatas by Franck and Brahms (Brahms’ was originally written for the violin), and Shostakovich and Tchaikovsky trios, as well as a recording of short pieces selected from the duet repertory.

• But why an orchestra comprised exclusively of cellos? On the one hand, because this versatile instrument can play just about everything. Its tonal spread allows it to sing in the upper register, to accompany in the middle or to assure a solid bass part. On the other hand, because the sound of eight cellos playing simultaneously is quite simply extraordinary. Let yourself be taken by this marvelous king of the strings which, in the hands of soloist Velitchka Yotcheva and surrounded by a full orchestra of like instruments and a piano, will surely resonate in the deepest recesses of your soul.
