is a set of standards for smartphone and similar devices to establish radio communication with each other by bringing them into close proximity. Extending the ability of the contactless card technology, NFC enables devices to share information at a distance less than 4cm with speed of 424kbps.

NFC makes life easier and more convenient for people by making it simpler share data, make transactions, access information or provide credentials for access control systems with a simple touch or tap.

The communication doesn't have to occur between two handheld devices, like two phones. It can also work with a mobile device and a target of some kind - for example, a POS system at a store's checkout counter or even something as simple as a tag, sticker, poster or card with an NFC chip embedded.
