Client’s General Specification

FORMATION OF CGS

• First stage:

- general Civil Engineering practices, recognised design and construction rules, guidance from authoritative organisations (e.g. BRE, CIRIA)

• Second stage, based on:

- Client’s experiences of previous works (construction techniques, lessons learned from existing structures);

- specific requirements for power station structures (cooling tower, dams, intake tunnels, containment)

Adaptation to UK Context

• Language translation and technical adaptation to UK practices • Four broad levels of adaptation:

1. Direct (or near) replacement of NF EN with equivalent BS EN (~80%)

e.g. replacement of NF EN 1008 « mixing water for concrete » with BS EN 1008

2. Replacement of French accreditation bodies with UK equivalent (~15%)

e.g. NF BPE (production facility for ready mix concrete) replaced by QSRMC, or AFCAB by CARES

3. French only standards (no direct equivalent in UK) (~5%)

e.g. FD P 18-011 - Definition and classification of aggressive environments for concrete mix design

covering pure water , for which there is currently no authoritative guidance in UK

4. Client’s procedures (materials tests) (~1%)

e.g. EDF procedure for concrete porosity

Discussion of Notable Requirements

CONCRETE• Aggregates• Other constituents• Formulation studies and compliance criteria

REINFORCEMENT• Connections and mechanical splices

PRE-STRESSING SYSTEM• Trial tests (grouting)• Grout mixes

Discussion of Notable Requirements

CONCRETE: AGGREGATES

• General requirements - Quarry file- Statistical analysis to determine consistency of the product- Specific physical and chemical properties - Tests required to demonstrate compliance during concrete formulation

• Specific requirements- For pre-stressed concrete and concrete in aggressive chemical and physical

environments

Discussion of Notable Requirements

CONCRETE: OTHER CONSTITUENTS

(additives, admixtures, binders, mixing water)

• General requirements- Compliance with recognised standards

- Tests before, during and after deliveries- Requirements for storage and use

• Specific requirements- For pre-stressed concrete GGBS is not permitted and PFA must be category A- Sulfide, chloride and sulfate content of admixtures shall be limited depending on the

application of the mix (pre-stressed concrete, grout for pre-stressed cables)

Discussion of Notable Requirements

CONCRETE: FORMULATION STUDIES AND COMPLIANCE CRITERIA

• Test studies in laboratory- Determination of nominal formula and tests for sensitivity to water content, binder content, and

proportion of aggregates. Aim to simulate and check effects of possible variation during batching.

- Tests results to comply with certain conditions (e.g. fcE > 1.2 fc28 for fc28 <50 MPa )

- Tests to check compliance with specific requirements for ‘mass’ concrete:Tmax < 65°C in all cases, <80°C may be permitted in special cases depending on environment (water) and composition of concrete, with the possible use of chilled water and/or ice

- Tests to check compliance with specific requirements concrete for inner and outer containment, self compacting concrete, sprayed concrete etc.

Discussion of Notable Requirements

CONCRETE:

FORMULATION STUDIES AND COMPLIANCE CRITERIA

• Suitability tests before concreting- Test for practical implementation of concrete on the site,

- Tests results must comply with certain conditions

• Quality control tests during production

- Requirement for a monthly report

- Requirement for tests are governed by frequency, type of structure and nature of materials

- Acceptance criteria include conditions on strength, temperature, consistency
