    dichotomy.Inotherwords,itdividestheworldintotheorientandtheoccidentEastand

    West.Thereis,understandably,alotofcontroversyoverthisschoolofthought.

    Atbest,itistoosimplistic,atworstitisblatantlyracist.Eitherway,itwasfordecadesthejustificationforthecolonial

    empirescreatedbymajorEuropeanpowersinthe18thand19th(andsomewouldargue

    20th)centuries.Andthatleadsustoanotherwayoforderingtheworld:civilization/empire.

    Thisisbasedonbig-picturegeographicunitsthatorganizationourunderstandingofworldhistoryintermsofverydistinctive:OldWorldandNewWorld.

    Theplacetostartislookingatideaswhatiscivilizationanyway?Whatdoesitmeanandwhyhavehumansrelegatedsomuchimportancetothisconcept?

    inwhichorientalismbecametheprimarylensthroughwhichtheWestdevelopeditspeculiar(racist)understandingoftheEast.
