• On January 1, 1863 President Abraham Lincoln issues the Emancipation Proclamation

Civil War Ends
• On April 9, 1865 General Robert E. Lee surrenders to General Ulysses S. Grant at Appomattox Court House, Virginia
Assassination of President Abraham Lincoln
• On April 14, 1865, just five days after Lee’s surrender, President Lincoln is assassinated by John Wilkes Booth at Ford’s Theater in Washington, D.C.
