The civil war was started on April 12 1861 when the confederates attacked

1st battle of bull run • July 21 1861• Occoquan river, Virginia• Brigadier General Irvin McDowell

tried to capture the union capitol Richmond. Brigadier General Beauregard was the commander of the confederates needed reinforcements. Colonel Jackson held ground against union.

Battle of Gettysburg• July 1-3, 1863• Gettysburg Virginia• Major General George Meade

lead the union against General Robert E. Lee. Confederates sent union troops running but the union held there ground. Confederates attempted to charge the union but the union held them off.

• Casualties- Union: 23055 Confederate: 23231

• Was the worst war. Also the turning point of the war for the union.

2nd Battle of Fort Fisher• January 18 1965• Fort Fisher, North Carolina• Major General Alfred Terry commanded

9000 union troops, Rear Admiral David D. Porter commanded 60 union ships. Major General W.H.C. Whiting commanded 1900 Confederate troops at the fort, Robert F. Hoke commanded 6400 troops just north. David blocked the cannons. Terry went in between the two confederate leaders but Hoke did not engage. Naval fire stop so the land troops could come and General Whiting was killed.

Battle of Appomattox Courthouse • April 7th 1865• Appomattox, Virginia• General Lee abandoned confederate

capital heading to North Carolina but General Grant cut him off. Lee received a letter requesting surrender. Instead lee went to Appomattox station waiting for supplies but union Calvary arrived first and burned it. Lee attacked small union groups with success and pushed through and meet the rest of lees army and surrendered.

• Casualties- Union: 164 Confederate: 500 • Was the last major battle
