Message from the Chair of the Division Dr. M. Asghar Bhatti P.E., University of Iowa, [email protected] I hope that your Spring semester is go- ing well. I am not sure why we call it the spring semester. Last week with a temperature of -9 o F (real temperature and not including the wind chill factor) it definitely was not spring-like weath- er in Iowa. Perhaps we call it the spring because we want to look ahead. With this in mind I want you to look little further ahead to June 23 26 when 2013 ASEE annual conference will be held in Atlanta, Georgia. I hope you all have your calendars marked and are planning to be in Atlanta for what promises to be an excellent conference. Matthew Roberts is this year’s program chair and I know he has been working very hard in putting together an excellent program for our CE Division. I hope you all enjoyed last year’s conference in San Antonio. I believe it was the first time that the division was successful in having speakers in the Distinguished Lecture se- ries. Thanks to Tom Lenox and the ASCE staff who did a wonderful job in organizing the division’s distin- guished lecture event. Also thanks to our distinguished lecture speakers Blaine Leonard, Steve Ressler and Jeff Russell for their excellent presentations on the “Raise the Bar” initiative. The division also sponsored a Sunday workshop organized by Wasim Barham and his colleagues from the Southern Polytechnic State University, Marietta, GA. The workshop was sold-out and everyone enjoyed learning about the virtual gaming environment for strength of materials laboratory. In addition there were nine podium sessions and one poster session. All sessions were very well attended, including even the very last session on Wednesday afternoon. As last year’s program chair I want to take this opportunity to formally thank over 150 reviewers, all speakers at the technical sessions, and all session moderators for making the 2012 conference a success. The division will hold its annual election around early March. There should be an opening for an incoming freshman director. I am looking for nominations for this position. Please email me your nominations at asghar- [email protected]. Self nominations are perfectly fine. This is an excellent opportunity for you to get involved in the division’s leadership. Remember, on Tuesday June 25, we will have the planning luncheon for next year. The cornerstone of good conference sessions is this planning meeting. So, come armed with some good session topics. Just to refresh your memory the subcommittees in charge of planning sessions each year are: Professional Practice, Educa- tional Policy, Effective Teaching, Instructional Technology and the ASCE Liaison Committee. Be thinking about which committee you want to be involved with. I look forward to seeing you all in Atlanta! I hope that your Spring semester is go-

ing well. I am not sure why we call it

the spring semester. Last week with a

temperature of -9oF (real temperature

and not including the wind chill factor)

it definitely was not spring-like weath-

er in Iowa. Perhaps we call it the spring

because we want to look ahead. With

this in mind I want you to look little

further ahead to June 23 – 26 when

2013 ASEE annual conference will be

held in Atlanta, Georgia. I hope you

all have your calendars marked and are

planning to be in Atlanta for what

promises to be an excellent conference. Matthew Roberts is this

year’s program chair and I know he has been working very hard in

putting together an excellent program for our CE Division.

I hope you all enjoyed last year’s conference in San Antonio. I

believe it was the first time that the division was successful in having speakers in the Distinguished Lecture se-

ries. Thanks to Tom Lenox and the ASCE staff who did a wonderful job in organizing the division’s distin-

guished lecture event. Also thanks to our distinguished lecture speakers Blaine Leonard, Steve Ressler and Jeff

Russell for their excellent presentations on the “Raise the Bar” initiative. The division also sponsored a Sunday

workshop organized by Wasim Barham and his colleagues from the Southern Polytechnic State University,

Marietta, GA. The workshop was sold-out and everyone enjoyed learning about the virtual gaming environment

for strength of materials laboratory. In addition there were nine podium sessions and one poster session. All

sessions were very well attended, including even the very last session on Wednesday afternoon. As last year’s

program chair I want to take this opportunity to formally thank over 150 reviewers, all speakers at the technical

sessions, and all session moderators for making the 2012 conference a success.

The division will hold its annual election around early March. There should be an opening for an incoming

freshman director. I am looking for nominations for this position. Please email me your nominations at asghar-

[email protected]. Self nominations are perfectly fine. This is an excellent opportunity for you to get involved

in the division’s leadership.

Remember, on Tuesday June 25, we will have the planning luncheon for next year. The cornerstone of good

conference sessions is this planning meeting. So, come armed with some good session topics. Just to refresh

your memory the subcommittees in charge of planning sessions each year are: Professional Practice, Educa-

Message from the Program Chair Dr. Matthew W. Roberts, P.E., University of Wisconsin-Platteville, [email protected]

I’d like to start by congratulating Asghar for a wonderful conference in San Anto-nio. There were many thought-provoking papers presented at the Civil Engineering Division sessions. As always, the social activities provided a great opportunity to meet and get to know other division members and to renew friendships. Oh, and Asghar, I haven’t forgotten: I’m still waiting for that iPad!

As I write this, division members are in the midst of finalizing papers for the annual ASEE conference, this year in Atlanta. From what I have seen, we will have many excellent papers for the conference. If you haven’t registered, it’s still not too late: Early-bird registration ends on April 7, 2013. I would also like to thank all of the reviewers for their help in reading and reviewing papers. We had over 90 members of the division volunteer their time to review abstracts and papers (see below).

The Civil Engineering Division has launched a new email bulletin shortly. The intent of the bulletin will be to help get the word out for activities and opportunities that division members might be interested in, particularly concerning engineering education and the scholarship of teaching and learning. If you have an announcement you’d like to submit for the bulletin, you can send me a short description including any relevant URLs and con-tact info. We will be unable to include attachments in the bulletin, so be sure to provide links to any additional information. The bulletin will be a low volume communication to division members— I anticipate sending it out once a month, on average. I hope it will provide a convenient way to let Civil Engineering Division mem-bers know about opportunities to enhance their teaching.

I would again invite you to join us for what looks to be an outstanding conference in Atlanta. I look forward to seeing you there! - Matt
