While it is commonly rehearsed that beauty is only skin deep, for cities that skin is rather thick—containing as it does buildings, plazas, green spaces, transportation networks and natural features. As such, to make a city beautiful requires signi�cant investment by its citizens over many generations and great periods of time. �e Ciurlionis Center is an op-portunity for today’s generation of Kaunas citizens to make their own contribution to the history and beauty of this great city. As such, the design should not only function, but seek to add important aesthetic value to the overall urban whole. Our design addresses this by proposing a new form of digital picturesqueness—with new and technologically enabled forms that de�ne the public riverfront, tower elements, building facades and public spaces. We are not recreating forms of the past, but are also not erasing the historic value of beauty, detail and composition that make them great. �rough innovative architectural design we simply hope to produce an original, and stunning, contribution to the historic Kaunas skyline and urban fabric.

CIURLIONIS CONCERT CENTRE

“We propose that social interaction and understanding can be prompted through great architecture, urbanism and the production of new civil public spaces. Through our design, the new Ciurlionis Centre features a large public plaza that radially organizes all of the associated programs and dramatically overlooks the river and city. It is our goal that these buildings and the public space they surround, become a vibrant cultural and social gathering place, accessible by all, that will function as the new urban heart of the city as it pulses into the new 21st century with renewed vigor and cultural status.” - Mark Foster Gage

KITSPLICING | An exploration of a new method for kit-form creation. By focusing on the seam at which two objects meet, we maintain a sense of control over the resolution of the final form. Rather than a clumping of many discrete objects, the final form is a whole new object all together.

GEOTHERMAL FUTURES LAB

“The Yale University School of Architecture and the Southern California Institute of Architecture are pleased to announce the opening of the public-access joint Geothermal Futures Lab demonstration in Los Angeles California. The laboratory researches the use of laser ablation geothermal resonance technologies that are capable of generating up to nineteen times more power than existing geothermal energy extraction techniques. Visitors can observe this prototype laser extraction process live as it showcases a method through which it will be possible to increase California’s reliance on sustainable geothermal sources of power from its existing state of 6% today to 68% by 2022.” -Mark Foster Gage [REDACTED]

ASSEMBLY | Each piece is nested and milled in rigid foam. The individual pieces are laminated into larger chunks varying from 7” to 11” in thickness. These larger chunks are aligned using metal dowels and held together with splice plates.

CONCRETE | A two-layer shotcrete hub allows for sculptural spaces to develop while also providing surfaces for projection.

STEEL | A reinforced steel system wraps around and clips to the shotcrete hub. The steel system promotes maximum flexibility in program layout and transparency.

POLYCARBONATE | A tertiary polycarbonate cladding system hangs off of the floor slabs. Openings are parametrically placed throughout to create views and outdoor spaces.

ALTERNATIVE FILMS Alternative Films is a center where filmmakers and the public come together to appreciate and make film, while encouraging the alternative of working in the city to capture the stories of the San Francisco community; the California community; the world. We promote cinema as an art form to provide a voice for the marginalized and those who support the causes of the disenfranchised. The activist and artistic culture of the Dogpatch Neighborhood allows for this not only feasible but beneficial alteration of the community with this project.

BLOOMS BLOOMS is a theater and exhibition space that re-energizes the dilapidated site of the SFSU Romberg Tiburon Center for Environmental Studies while remaining loyal to the integrity of its history. By mimicking jellyfish blooms, the layering of the programmatic spaces and primary structure combine to create interesting light conditions. The secondary cladding system further accentuates the layering effect. In addition, by building separate program blocks, daylight is able to be maximized and social gathering can occur within the liminal spaces.
