“Being a father is more than just pro-viding financial support for thechildren.”
This was revealed during a discussionheld as part a four-day workshop aimed atdeveloping fathers in the community.
This project was initiated by the City ofCape Town and facilitated by Samila GenderCounselling and Support Services, culmi-nated at the Thusong Centre in Khayelitsha.
One of the main objectives of the initiativewas the promotion of responsible father-hood.
The workshops created a platform for themen to gather and conduct discussionsabout what this meant and how it can beachieved, according to the organisers.
“One of the key outcomes was the realisa-tion amongst the men of the importance ofcommunication, responsibility and under-standing as fathers.
As a father it is important that you do notbecame a dictator in the house which makesdecisions but rather consults the wife andinvolves the children,” said Samila facilita-tor Yonela Mazula.
Mazula also noted that one of the resolu-tions made by the men was the lack activeinvolvement in the development of children.
“Money can never be a substitute for par-enting as many fathers seem content withpaying child maintenance but fail to be in-volved in the child’s life. Sometimes evenwhen the father is living with the child butthey hardly check up on the child’s homework or go to their school and check theirdevelopment,” said Mazula.
Another Somila facilitator NtuntuzeloPungulwa said that what was key to thegreat reception of the initiative by the menwas the conversational approach.
“The workshops were not about us educa-tion the fathers but by allowing them to getin groups and discussing the various areas,”he said.
Pungulwa also noted that many people inthe community were not aware of theirrights regarding issues of domestic violence.
This was one of the issues addressed byguest speaker on the last day Velile Yayi,Khayelitsha Magistrate Court manager.
Yayi encouraged the man to take a differ-ent approach to domestic squabbles as theymay lead to bigger problems.
“When your partner or wife takes you tocourt resulting in a domestic dispute and aa protection order is sanctioned and you
break that order it then becomes a criminalmatter.
“It may lead to you getting a criminalrecord which may affect your chances ofgaining employment.
“This is why I would like to advised to you
today to refrain from getting into physicalaltercations,” Yayi advised.
He offered advice on various social and le-gal issues to the men that went back andforth asking questions and seeking advice ofon different issues.

Whilemanyare looking forward to thefestive season celebration, oneMfu-leni education collective is already
looking beyond.The Mfuleni Education Forum is invitingresidents; churches, communities and otherorganisations donate pairs of schools shoes.The forum was born out of the local Wes-leynChurch as part of the organisation look-ing at various community needs.
This is part of their back-to-school cam-paign.According to the Thembekile Gqwaka,MEF chair, the campaign aims to fight pov-erty and its dire effects on society.“A shoemay seem like an insignificant ob-ject but it’s one of the first things that dis-courage a child from going to school.There are many children in the grip ofpoverty in our community and affordingthem a pair of shoes can be the push theyneed,” said Gqwaka.
He said that this was just the start of aone of a handful of campaigns they aim topush for next year.“When this forumwas formed,we identi-fied various problems in the educationlandscape in Mfuleni.The fact there isn’t one skill of school isvery discouraging and the fact thereschools in the area were divided betweentwo districts in the education departmentswas a headache but it has been solved,” hesaid.
Gqwaka said that they were urging localresidents and organisations to heed theircall and donate a pair of shoes.“It’s a small thing but it will ready dowonders for the moral of the child.We will be accepting donations at the Mil-ton Martin church on monday afternoon,”he said.The forum has been very instrumental inalso approaching corporate companies todo-nate uniforms at the local schools and theyaim to much more.To donate a pair of shoes or formore infor-mation contact Mr Gqwaka on 0839555061.

Business owners reap rewardsCHANDREY HOWBURG
Agroup of passionate business ownershave been rewarded for their hardwork and dedication.
After successfully completing a SmallBusiness Academy programme of the Uni-versity of Stellenbosch Business School(USB), 20 participants from around CapeTown graduated with a pass rate of 91% onFriday last week.
The programme is sponsored by Absa andthe Distell Foundation.
The nine-month programme includedtraining on business administration, finan-
cial management, IT skills and marketingamongst others.
Participants were subjected to a strict se-lection process to ensure the best suited par-ticipants were selected.
The Small Business Academy is an offi-cially registered programme at the USB,says programme director Dr Marietjie Ther-on-Wepener.
Director of the Business School, Prof PietNaude, was the guest speaker at the gradua-tion ceremony. He congratulated the gradu-ates on their achievements.
“The world owes you nothing, you owe theworld your skills and you will succeed and
then the rewards will come,” said Naude.
AwardsThe ceremony included three special
awards.The award for Most Improved Student
was given to Nomvano Mbathiso fromSiqalo informal settlement near Mitchell’sPlain.
The aim of her business is getting theyouth off the street to play soccer.
The owner of the Try Again FootballClub (Ayatshisa Mateki) was surprisedwhen they called out her name.
The programme was difficult and shewanted to quit, she said, but her mentorhelped her and she pulled through.
Phumlani Dlongwana from Philippi alsoreceived an award. His business, Waste toFood, was elected the Business with theMost Potential.
He was extremely happy and could notbelieve that he was chosen for the award.
Dlongwana is making a significant con-tribution in reducing greenhouse gas emis-sions at landfill sites in Cape Town. Apply-
ing advanced technology, his business con-verts food waste and clipped garden wasteinto compost.
He encourages people not to take smallbusinesses for granted.
Aashiqa Essop from Brackenfell receivedthe award for Top Student, as she receivedthe highest mark overall.
She was overwhelmed and said that hermentor told her that coming on top wouldgive her great exposure and she would excel.
But she did not do this for herself but forher business, as she is driven and motivatedto succeed in her business.
Essop and her husband are the owners ofan automotive electronic workshop calledMagic Worx.
Impact of streams“A river that flows past you into the ocean
looks very big but, if you go into the origins,it’s small and insignificant, until all thestreams comes together and becomes one.That is what we at the USB would do to cre-ate little streams so that they can grow big-ger in the years to come,” said Naude.

Glazed Eisbein:Ingredients:4 Smoked Pork Eisbein1 Onion, peeled and halved12 Whole cloves90ml Soft brown sugar6 Bay leaves
Glaze:3 tbs Mustard6 tbs Honey3 tbs Melted butter
Step 1: Put the eisbein in a large pot and add the onion, cloves, brown sugar and bayleaves. Cover the eisbein with water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for1½ to 2 hours or until soft.
Step 2: Preheat oven to 220°C. Remove the pork from the pot and place into a roastingdish. Mix the mustard, honey and melted butter and brush over the pork. Roast in thepre-heated oven until the skin is crisp.

Skosana has been suspended, withoutpay, from his job as chaplain at the AirForce and has also been banned from theUniversity of the Western Cape where hewas commissioned as mediator by theWestern Cape Religious Leaders Forumwith the support of its patron, Archbish-op Thabo Makgoba.On both occasions there has been no
written correspondence to Pastor Skosanastipulating the grounds on which suchdrastic measures were taken.Like some of the spiritual leaders of
the mid 80s who dared to speak truth topower, Pastor Skosana finds himselfunder the scrutinizing eye that paintshim as the instigator of violence andanarchy, accusations aimed at givingcredence to some ‘third party’ conspiracy.A leaked email doing the rounds on
Facebook speaks to the smear campaignagainst him and against students risingup against fees and the oppressive natureof them to their academic progress.Credit for these historic student
protests that are taking place at UWC,and across the country, is due to thecourageous and selfless students of the#UWCFeesWillFall, #EndOfOutsourcing
and #FeesMustFall movement.Theirs is a just and noble cause; the
struggle for free quality education andthe end of outsourcing.The role of Pastor Skosana has been to
give spiritual sanction and moral supportto the worthy struggle for equal access toopportunities and the end of exploitativelabour conditions.These restrictions against Pastor Xola
Skosana are not only a violation of hisconstitutional rights and an unsubstanti-ated defamation to his character but seekto undermine the efforts of young peoplecalling for their emancipation in asimilar vein between the apartheid SouthAfrica of the 80s and the Youth of theday.It comes as a psychological blow to the
youth in a country where education is ata high premium and is not accessible byall at tertiary level and rates of literacyleaves the country still talking of scarceskills 21 years into a new dispensation.The restriction of Pastor Skosana
undermines the Black Struggle foremancipation in a similar way thatundermines Blackness throughout theglobe.Places like West Papua are in a perpet-
ual state of Apartheid and the youthspeaking out against academic Apartheidare met with violence and incarceration.We, the friends of Pastor Xola Skosana

Crime fighter arrestOn my way to work on Monday morning,approximately at about 6:20 I witnessed arobbery unfold in front of my eyes atVanguard Drive traffic lights.Driving in front of an SAPS quantum,

Wedded bliss delayed for coupleThis is not a complaint but a lifetimedisaster. Three weeks ago me and mypartner went to the Khayelitsha HomeAffairs to register our same-sex marriage.I was disturbed by the incompetency
that greatly inconvenienced us a couple.The lack of information in that branch
about this kind of marriage is alarming.This needs to be rectified in every way
possible. After registering in the mar-riage book, it took us several e-mails andcalls to a higher office for us to be issuedour marital certificate-we were told itwas not valid.At one stage I was called to an 8am
meeting with a certain official who onlypitched up an hour late. In my kind of
work I am paid on hourly basis, thismeant I lost income.When I finally had a chance to speak to
the official I asked her to explain onwhat grounds was marriage null andvoid.I had told her that even though we
were married on November 5, still byNovember 19 our certificate was notissued. I spent an hour with the officialexplaining my grievance. I also asked herif the office had received any training onconducting same sex marriages.

Others don’t have guardians to keepwatch over their activities, so they end upmostly on the receiving end of acts unbecom-ing.
This is a saddening trend and have hence-forth resolved to do something about it.
It is obvious that these young girls do nothave role models to look up to.
By penning this article, it is my aim toreach out to young girls and to get them tothink about changing their lives.
I am in my early 20’s and I have alreadyachieved a lot, academically and socially.I’m all about empowering other women andreaching for goals and I want this attitudeto rub off on young girls.
I am a television presenter at Cape TownTV, Miss Earth South Africa semifinalist, abusinesswoman and I am currently study-ing towards a career in medical law.
I would like to use this opportunity to em-power young girls through motivation. Ihave had the experience of working withgroups of volunteers and have discoveredthat I can inspire people to outdo obstaclesin their path.
It is only when people appreciate the big-ger picture that they start applying them-selves fully to the cause. I would like to seemyself develop further in this regard in aprofessional sense.
And I can think of no better way to achievethis than to be working in teams with a com-mon goal.
I am a dedicated, passion-driven individu-al with a burning desire to add valuethrough the efficient application of myself to
the task at hand.After all, it is what the person presents
and is willing to offer that makes them suc-cessful at the end of the day and

tion and drumming as channelsfor children to find space to “re-flect”.
“When they come out fromthe creches you find them play-ing meaningless games, sometimes dangerous one and noware using drumming for themto find calmness amidst the“noise of ekasi”.Last week the group had a
beach walk and found time to“talk to nature”Lugogo said their target

‘Learn my music before I leave’ZILA MKONTO
Madosini Maphahleni, the legendaryXhosa bow player, recognising thatno one lives forever, has sent out an
appeal to the youth to follow in her foot-steps.
Speaking during the Living LegendsProgramme (LLLP) master class held atChris Hani Arts School, the indigenousmusic legend spoke from the heart, urgingthe youth to “love their culture”.
“I have taught foreign people my skillsand how to build these instruments butthere has been no South African or a Xhosaperson saying teach me,” said Madosini.
Madosini was conducting the class aspart of the Department of Arts and Cul-ture’s strategy of using veteran musiciansand artists over the age of 70 years to im-part their skills to the youth.
Lulama Ndabankulu from the Depart-ment of Arts and Culture said it was impor-tant that veterans like Madosini sharedtheir stories.
“Her hsitory is rich and we must allowyoung children to tap into that so that wecanunearthnewMadosinis for the future,”she said.
Ndabankulu said they have gatheredmost of the ageing artists to be part of theLLLP.
Madosini is an award winning indige-nous musician and her visit to the schoolprovided a little insight on why she is cele-brated.
She told the learners that she was one ofthe few people who still play that kind ofmusic.
“That’ why I want some of you to comeout and say to me “teach us Madosini”, Iwill do that free of charge because I don’want this music to die with me,” she saidto a thunderous applause.
In August 2015 the Department of ArtsandCulture announced theLegendsLivingLegacy Programme, the initiative seeksto honour the living legends of the arts, cul-ture and heritage sector, document theircontribution and provide opportunities forinteraction and imparting skills to young-er generations of artists.
In September this year, the Departmentof Arts and Culture conducted a workshopto outline the vision of the Living LegendsLegacy Programme (LLLP).
It is from this vision and through engage-ment with the Living Legends themselves,that a programme of lectures on varioustopics and a Master Classes incubator pro-gramme has been developed.
“The aim of this initiative is to identifyliving legends across all arts disciplinesand engage them actively in programmesthat promote arts and culture development.This is in line with our policy interventionto develop the Living Heritage Policy,” saidNdabankulu.
Madosini sings and plays various indige-nous instruments such as the umrubhe(mouth bow), uhadi (calabash musical bow)and sitolotolo (Jewish harp).
Madosini’s music was first recorded inthe early 70’s, and played on the radio with-out royalties being paid to her.
In 1997, she worked with other musiciansto produce an album. Her song Wen’usegolialso featured the South African film Yester-day (2004) starring Leleti Khumalo. In 2008she featured in the song Lion in a Coma byAnimal Collective, an internationallyrecognized experimental psychedelic bandoriginally from Baltimore, Maryland.
In 2008, Madosini performed at the WO-MAD festival, and was the first person tobe recorded and documented in the festi-val’s Musical Elders Archives project. Shehas worked with the likes of Hans and Rob-ert Brokes, Sibongile Khumalo, ThandiswaMazwai, Mzwandile Qotoyi, Dizu Plaatjiesand Pedro Espi-Sanchis. A charismaticpractitioner, and representative of an age-old but gradually vanishing endemic cul-ture,
Madosini is recognized as a national trea-sure and important indigenous knowledgebearer, yet a huge discrepancy exists be-tween the general admiration for her artand any close interaction or involvementwith it. Her role as a traditionalist in a fast-changing society pose challenges for re-search and exploration in indigenousknowledge systems that are of on-going con-cern to South African intellectual and mu-sical life.

Meeting their heroesILitha Primary School pupils have had theopportunity to meet the cricketing heroeswho have inspired them, thanks to KFCMini-Cricket.
Thembelihle Lonzi, from the school, hadthe rare opportunity of assisting Justin On-tong from the Cape Cobras with the coin tosswhen his team played the Unlimited Titans
at PPC Newlands last Friday in the RamSlam T20 Challenge.
A visibly excited Thembelihle was jump-ing up with joy as he approached the centre-field.
His team-mates from the school alsoseemed to enjoy coming face-to-face withtheir heroes and fielding on the boundary.

Kasi cricket given major boostThe Cricket School of Excellence (CSE) hasactively responded to the need for townshiptalent development following the country-wide debate around transformation and tal-ent development in South African sports.
Last Thursday, the CSE hosted its first De-velopment Cricket Clinic with the Austra-lian High Commission at the KhayelitshaCricket Club.
The clinic was the first of a year-long part-nership that the High Commission is cur-rently committed to funding through the Di-rect Aid Program.
Adam McCarthy the Australian HighCommissioner to South Africa said he ispleased to support CSE's aim of identifyingand nurturing cricket talent within the area,while also identifying a school which will beadopted to further grow the learner’s crick-eting talent.
As part of the CSE's ongoing developmentwork, the clinic will be hosting 100 boys andgirls from the local cricket clubs and sur-rounding schools in and around Khayelitshathat have shown interest and aptitude forthe game.
Ryan Maron, Founder of the CricketSchool of Excellence said:
“We at CSE are responding to the need toidentify talent within disadvantaged areasso that most of these kids who are naturallytalented, have access to programs and facili-ties that will help them understand thegame, gain confidence and further developtheir skills”.
The first development clinic kicked withthe support of The Australian Navy’s SailShip Training (STS) Young Endeavors,which had recently docked in Cape Town.
The young cadets assisted the CSE coach-es and the Khayelitsha clinic facilitators bytaking over 120 children who were presentthrough various drills and exercises.
A nutritionist from Futurelife gave nutri-tional advice, which empowered the youngcricketers with the promotion of a healthywell-balanced life style.
There were also talks and interactionswith sports psychologists from Headstrong.
Representatives from the Western CapeGovernment were also present at the clinicsand showed great interest in extending theirsupport for future endeavours.
A select group of girls and boys will be fur-ther trained at the Cricket School of Excel-lence where they will have an opportunityto possibly compete and participate at pro-vincial and national level should they con-tinue to excel.
“We are fully committed to unearthingtalent within our townships, but in order tomake a lasting impact, our efforts need to becollective,” said Maron.
“Just as it is our responsibility as a pri-vate clinic to give back, partnering up withcorporates and government will ensure thatwe can facilitate more clinics such as thisone through a wider footprint.”
The CSE has been self-funding the clinicsfor the past decade.
School rugbygains mileageTalent is abundant in the townships
and this was evident during a prima-ry schools tournament staged by an
avid rugby coach at the Khayelitsha Sta-dium last week.
The AJ Lamani and Via Media RugbyCup saw Ikhusi, Injongo,Soyisile, Sose-benza, Sobambisana, Kuyasa, Sakumlan-dela, Homba and Delft Primary Schoolsbattle it out for the under-13 trophies, inboth the boys and girls sections.
Ayanda Lamani, who organised thegames, said the standard was very highand each school was a “winner by merelyparticipating”.
“These kids learnt a lot during thistournament. We used it as a session toshare skills whilst competing hard for thetrophy,” said Lamani.
After an array of tough games, SoyisilePrimary School emerged victors in theboys rugby section whilst in the girls sec-tion, Chumisa Primary took the spoils.
Lamani, who is a development coachat the Western Province Rugby said he
was driven by passion to stage such atournament.
“This was our first attempt and nextyear we will feature high schools whenwe stage the same tournament in April,”he said.
Lamani singled out Iqhayiya HighSchool principal Ayanda Mbava and Ter-ror Ngubelanga for supporting him in hisquest to stage this tournament.
Khayelitsha Sports Council chairmanThembile Gamzana hailed this effort asa “strategic way of enforcing develop-ment”.
“These children must be taught froman early age about the basics of rugby sothat when the time comes, they can repre-sent the country,” he said.
Masibulele Bokoyi and Zaza Maqhoshawho spent 10 months on a rugby sportsexchange in Norway shared some of hisskills with the learners.

Mgebe Securities has responded to the clari-on call to support sports in Khayelitsha bysponsoring a rugby tournament in the area.
Headed by Sithembiso Mntengwana, theleading security firm will launch an annualschools rugby tournament at KhayelitshaStadium on Friday morning.
“We receive a lot of funding proposals, butsince we believe in youth empowerment, wefelt we must work with the schools throughsport,” said Mntengwana.
The tournament will feature primaryschools. Khayelitsha Sports Council (KSC)
secretary Rhorho Mnyamana said they werethrilled when Mgebe Securities approachedthem with the idea.
“We have long asked local business peopleto play their part and Mgebe Securities an-swered that call and we appreciate that,”said Mnyamana.
Mnyamana said KSC will be vocal in thecoming year when addressing businesses inthe township.
“We won’t force them but they must knowthey have a serious role to play in support-ing the games,” said the bearded one.
