Langa’s Siyabulela Primary School is de-termined to reach the top spot in theschool choral music competition after
their latest triumph. On Thursday, the school outshone its
counterparts in four categories at the Dis-trict competitions making their way to theprovincial competition.Siyabulela took first place in four catego-
ries, the Senior (Grade 5 to 7), Infants (GradeR to 2), Junior (Grade 3 to 4) aswell the indig-enous performance categories. The performance means their choirs will
nowrepresent themat theprovincial compe-tition and at the national level if they farewell. The last time the school won big at the na-
tional competition was in 2003 and havetheir eyes set on reclaiming the glory.“Wehave had a sit down as themusic com-
mittee and we set targets of becoming cham-pions at the national level.“One of the ideas we came up with was
that by submitting as many choirs for thecompetition as possible, we would increaseour chances,” said teacher and conductor Si-thembele Khamsholo. He said that the results were the rewards
that came from the hard work of all in-volved.“There was a good working relationship
between the parents, the teachers and themanagement of the school. There was a lotof sacrifice from the parents, learners andteachers. In preparation for the competition, we did
not even go on recess during the Easter holi-days. We practised and made sure that ourteam was always at the ready,” explainedKhamsholo.Although Khamsholo was grateful to the
parents and the management, he noted thatthere was still more work to be done.
“Our aim is to win, so we must continueto work hard,” he added.Acting principal, Masixole Guzana said
it has been since they won at national level.“We have been very successful at district
and provincial competitions but we havestruggled at the last step. There needed to be interventions such as
getting people who are knowledgeable inmusic to assist, working extra hours in prep-arationsandgiving extra support andweareseeing the results,”He said that they were very proud of their
teams and thanked the community for avail-ing the learners.

Manelisi doing it the green wayManelisi Mapukata is an or-
ganic urban farmer basedin Gugulethu, where he
lives with his wife and three chil-dren.The name ‘Manelisi’ means ‘last
born’ in isiXhosa, a position in thefamily that entitled him to the in-heritance of his father’s homewhen he passed away.Manelisi learned to love garden-
ing when he was a young boy, andhe has decided to use his newly ac-quired land to pursue his passionfor growing vegetables.Determined to expandhisknowl-
edge of farming, Manelisi attendeda training course offered by gar-dening centre Abalimi Bezekhaya, sought advice from neighbouringfarmers and even collected ‘HowTo Grow Food’ articles from YOUmagazine.
He also purchased some chickenand geese, using their manure tofertilise his soil. In this way, Man-elisi managed to sustain himselfand his family off of the produce hegrows in his garden.Manelisi now shares his garden-
ing knowledge with the Gugulethucommunity in the hope of inspir-ing others to do what he has done- use their own backyards to bettertheir lives. He hands out seedlingsto get people started and showsthem how best to utilise the spacethey have. However, Manelisimaintains that his very best advicefor farming is simply to “love yourplants, because they won’t surviveif you don’t. Everything in thisworld has ears; you must love ev-erything that you touch’.Mandelisi practices this philoso-
phy of love and care by mentoringfuture generations and teachingthemwhat he knows. Not only doeshe give gardening tips to his neigh-bours, but he also teaches childrenat local schools how to plant andgrow their own seedlings.
His aim is to show the youth inhis area that there is an alternativeto getting involved in drugs andgangs. He hopes to develop a farm that
might one day be able to keep awhole community of youths off thestreets. By donating to our Thun-dafund campaign you can be a partof helping him in this admirableendeavour. He has recently beengranted additional land on whichto expandhis farm, but he lacks theresources necessary to develop itto its full potential.Manelisi has big dreams for his
new farm – to have a container inwhich he can grow mushrooms, tostart a restaurant using his freshproduce and to run everything offof solar panels. For now though,Manelisi just needs funds in orderto be equipped with the most basicof farming facilities and tools, suchas a water pump, a chicken house, poles and fencing. Ideally he is hop-ing to raise enough to build a farm-ing tunnel in which he can growflowers and vegetables..
Nomhle Zondani plants a vine while Manelisi looks on.
Vines were planted at Maneli’ NY 71 Urban Farm.

B&B rises like the PhoenixThe Thebe Tourism Group has sponsoredLungi’s B&B in Khayelitsha to the tune ofR50 000 for development. The B&Bwas opened by former domestic
worker Nomalungelo “Lungi” Pango inFebruary 2010, but was sadly devastated bya shack fire in 2014 before being rebuilt andreopening in September 2015.Thebe Tourism Group general manager,
Brett Hendricks, announced the donationafter beingmadeawareof this inspirationalstory in his role as board member of CapeTown Tourism and on the Board Develop-ment Fund (BDF) commitee, a programmestarted in 2014 to assist SMMEowners fromhistorically disadvantaged backgrounds.Lungi’s B&B placed third at the BDF’s
Awards last week, missing out on the twoR50 000 prizes which went to Turning PointB&B andMaboneng Township Arts Experi-ence.
Hendricks was so moved by the story, that he and his fellow executive membersagreed to contribute R50 000 to assist in thedevelopment of Lungi’s B&B.The dream of opening Lungi’s B&B was
borne while Lungi worked as a domesticworker at another B&B in Sea Point and no-ticed that tourists were interested in expe-riencing township life.In 2010, with Marijke Frijters’-her previ-
ous employer- assistance in initial fun-draising, her dream became a reality withLungi’s B&B opening its doors in Februaryof the year. The grant will be used to build a fence
and a gate, to create a new garden and re-place furnituredestroyedby the fire in 2014;to invest in the ‘Makaha Youth in ArtProject’; aswell as to furtherherhospitalityeducation and to get her official tour guidequalifications.“Lungi’s story is powerful and inspiring
and her entreprenneurial spirit and self-be-lief have been evident throughout her jour-
ney,” said Hendricks.“In many ways it resonates with the The-
be story which came from humble begin-nings and has since grown into a signifi-cant, respected black-owned business. Weaim to empower her in building a sustaina-ble business, and this kind of initiativecould be the start of somethingmuchbiggerfor Thebe Tourism going forward.”Hendricks also challenged other compa-
nies in the private sector to come on boardto transform the tourism sector byupliftingcommunity-based businesses.
“In South Africa, the SME market iswhere our growth will come from and wecannot rely solely on government for fund-ing and support; we, as the private sector, must play a major role in driving innova-tion, sustainability and transformation intourism. This, in turn, creates the space forentrepreneurs to engage with their ideasand bring them to fruition. We’ll takeLungi’s experience with us and learn fromit,” he said . Britecap’s offer for job-seekersMBONGISENI MASEKO
Job seekers are set to breathe a sigh of re-lief as a newly launched online platformdesigned to easily connect them with
employerswasbrought to their door-steps inPhilippi.Britecap launched its first branch in Phil-
ippi Village ContainerWalk, in January and
has since seen positive results. It connects job seekers with employers for
free. It is not only free to the job seeker up-loading a profile (online CV), but it is alsofree for employers to search for new candi-dates.Britecap is not a recruitment agency or la-
bour broker and does not take any commis-sion.
Jacomien Van Der Merwe, the Chief Ex-ecutive Officer of Britecap, said the tech-nology start-up is aiming to solve the un-employment problem faced by the low tomedium skilled workers within communi-ties.“It is very hard for job seekers as they
spend a lot of money in internet cafes andtravelling to the city or other places to lookfor work. Barriers to the job market arevery high,” Van Der Merwe said. The platform was created to provide low
to medium skilled job seekers the opportu-nity to showcase their skills and experi-ence and to be more discoverable for newor better job opportunities.Britecap is much more cost effective
than traditionalmethods of finding jobs, asit reduces or eliminates the cost of creatingor updating a CV, printing and transportcost.About 2000 job seekers have already reg-
istered since its launch in January and
theywere also able to connect to over 600 jobseeker profiles with potential employers.Jonathan Van Der Merwe, Co Founder of
Britecap, said the platform is suitable foranyone above the age of 18 and the disabled.“It is sad that job seekers have to spend
so much money when they are looking fora job. Finding a job is a fundamental rightThis is the first branch andwe are looking
to expand to other communities providedthat we get the funds,” he said.Lakhikhaya Jobela, 31, is one of the unem-
ployed youth and he was at the centre to up-load his CV when City Vision visited onMonday.Jobela was full of praises for the centre.
“It is a brilliant idea. We are now going tosave a lot of money that we had to spend go-ing to look for jobs or in internet cafe. Thisis going to help us a lot,” he said. For more information please visit their

Crime a common foeWestern Cape police commissioner
Lieutenant General KhombinkosiJula and Cape Town mayor Patricia
de Lille in Gugulethu on Thursday reaf-firmed their commitment in fighting crimetogether.
The pair went on a walkabout of the com-munity, engaging with residents.
Jula said: “In our obligation, we are re-quired to ensure our communities are safeand they feel safe.”
De Lille demonstrated her commitment to-wards the partnership in the fight againstcrime, he said. Jula would make sure it wasa partnership that yields results in ensuringthe safety of communities.
“We are making a lot of breakthroughs to-gether in our integrated approach, we are re-organising ourselves.
“We have a responsibility to keep on eval-uating whether we are making an impact.
“An impact which will be in line with the
expectations of the communities weserve,” he said.
Jula said the province has serious prob-lems with drugs and gangsterism and, along with other serious crime, the part-nership between police and the city wasvery important.
“We are here today in the spirit of co-op-erative governance to reaffirm our com-mitment to working with the SAPS to ad-dress the scourge of crime across our city,”De Lille said.
“According to Section 64C(2)(g) of theSouth African Police Service Act, No. 68 of1995, an annual police plan must be devel-oped by the executive head of the munici-pal police service after consultation withthe South African Police Service and rele-vant community policing forums.
We are currently drawing up the 2016/17plan for submission to Lieutenant GeneralJula by the end of April,” she said.

‘I was also bullied by the SGB’The article (“Teacher paralysed me”City Vision, March 31) refers.I have had a similar experience to
the learner referred to in the article.I feel I was treated with disdain
during a disciplinary hearing regard-ing my niece at her school.I had no problem with the disciplina-
ry hearing being instituted, but themanner in which I was treated by theSchool Governing Body is of greatconcern. They treated me as if I wasan illiterate idiot who had no ideawhat I was talking about. They were very disrespectful and I
am under the impression that half of
the members(SGB), if not all, had noidea what their function was, being apart of this board.I really hope more parents and
guardians come forward with theirexperiences dealing with the SGBs.I have written a letter to complain to
the minister(of Basic Education), theCircuit Manager and the head of thedisciplinary procedures, but still havenot receive any response.I really hope that the department of
education will investigate the conductof these boards.

Beware of ‘oomasingcwabane’The story on page 1 last week (“I lost R10000 for R30’) City Vision 07 April 2016refers.It pains me to read such articles; our
people are losing their hard-earned cashat the hands of unscrupulous associationheads trying to save for the funeralexpenses of their loved ones, only to findout that when the cash is needed, theyhave outstanding dues.Would it not be better if the societies
updated their members by some form ofcommunication, e.g buy sms bundles andinform or remind them of their arrears.
This is not the first I have read aboutsuch an issue and definitely not the last.People must look for reputable compa-
nies or institutions, as it seems to be acommon problem with our communitybased societies that people must experi-ence such problems when they have toclaim their monies. A lot of people dropout of these societies because of thedissatisfaction caused by reasons ofnon-payment. What happens to the moneyalready contributed?

We have lost ubuntu valuesWhy has it become so easy for us tokill one another these days.It is so sad to read in the newspa-
pers and other social media of dailykillings at the hands of people.Whatever happend to the humanity
and compassion of uBuntu. Why havepeople turned into animals. We hear everyday couples killing
each other, brothers and sisters killing
each other. Where did it go wrong. When did we end up like this.
Everybody is calling for justice to playits part to end this carnage.I support this call, but let us ask
ourselves why this is happening atthis rate. We seem to have lost all ourhuman values.

False promises of freedom andpoverty turn us into living deadThe oppressed masses have nothing tocelebrate but everything to mourn.Every day a part of us dies and rot in
jail. We have looked poverty in the eyesfor far too long, it is now a part of us.Our conditions do not allow us to lead
a normal and healthy life.I do not think we were created to live
in slums, that are infested with all sortsof vermin, disease, lifelessness andpoverty. We are knocking at devil’s door just to
make a living.Like crabs in a barrel, that is how we
live, and even luckier to make it outalive. We have come to think this isnormal.Townships are dripping with blood,
campuses have become war zones, wewalk around in pain and rage and hatredand we don’t even realise it.Physically, emotionally, mentally and
spiritually we are dead; purposefulexistence has been sucked out of most ofour people.
The soul of democracy’s hypocrisy liveson, leaving us down and out.We have become mere walking corpses,
waiting for our own burial.Buried in the slums and overcrowded
jails, because we don’t even posses theland in which to bury our own.We have lost everything and anything
that has ever mattered to us; our land, spirituality, culture, history and mentalfaculties. We are distracted by Western Culture
to everything that is irrelevant to ourown development. We will never breathe clean air until
all that belongs to us is back in ourpossession. We have been reduced topeople that have to fight for survival intheir own country. We smile and hold hands with our
oppressor as he feasts on our wealth.Still, we have the audacity to say we arefree, when we are actually dead.

Busy Bees RFC, the Mother City’s firstever Black rugby club is determined toassume their position among the big

themselves within an ear-shot of this acco-lade as they are now in the play-offs of theWestern Province’s Super League. They arecurrently in the second division which hasthree districts namely the City, Northernand Southern Districts. Busy Bees has wona place in the City division. The Langa based club is preparing to par-

that now is the time for the team to climbup to the Super League.
“Winning last season has given us the vig-our to fight it out in this elimination stage. We have just the right combination of expe-rience and youth to put us in a good posi-tion,” he noted.Kewana said there was an air of great an-
ticipation among the players and members.“Playing in the super League would be a
big achievement for us becausewere are oneof the oldest teams in the townships. It reallyhas been a long time coming and it is timethat we take our rightful place in provincialrugby,” said Kewana.“The first team has seen the addition of
good players from the youth team and theyare hungry to see the mission being accom-plished,” he added.Busy Bee was founded in 1923 in District
Six by black migrant labourers from theEastern Cape. Due to the then governmentApartheid laws the team was moved to Lan-ga in the 1937.They played most of the games as part of
the Sunday leagues. The list of successfulplayers to come out of the team is endless.Coach and former player Jongi Nokwe is
confident that more players will come out ofthe ranks of the team. “I have been here forjust under amonth and Iwas thoroughly im-pressed by the talent and determination ofthe players. They have already done well bywinning the league.”
