In a bid to make the game of chess less for-eign, a partnership by the local depart-ment of sports and recreation and former
professional chess player Watu Kobese willsee the game brought closer to young minds.
The partnership began when the profes-sional chess player Kobese wrote a how-to-play chess book in IsiXhosa.
Kobese has been crowned chess championin the country more than three times and isranked as a master internationally.
The title of the book isMasidlale Uthimba. He is credited with coining the term uthim-ba for the boardgame in IsiXhosa.
‘The objective of the game is to captureyour opponent’s king, so to impound in IsiX-hosa is ukuthimba.
In this book, its just more than translatingEnglish terms for the rules and pieces of thegame, but rather to rename the terms so thatthey can relate to our communities,’ Kobesetold City Vision during activation at the Gu-gulethu mall.
Kobese and the local sports departmentare taking the book and the game of chesson a road show by staging demonstrationsat various places in the townships.
“We kicked off with a roadshow in Khaye-litsha last week, where we invited youngpeople to come and play chess at the Khaye-litsha Mall.
The more visible the game is, there morepeople will be interested, hopefully,” he said.
He said even they hope that this initiativewill help demystify the game in local com-munities.
“Even today you can see that a lot of peoplelook on at the board games on the table butthey are too shy to join.
To them, it’s a foreign concept and by giv-ing the game a Xhosa term and instructionsin their language, it will help in breaking theboundary, ‘ said Kobese.
Thabo Tutu, director of sports promotionsat the provinces sports and recreation de-partment, said that chess is one of their pri-ority codes.
‘We are focusing on developing codes suchas cycling, basketball, athletics and chess. We believe that chess is crucial sport as it
promoted discipline and time management. These are important traits from young peo-ple.
It is also good to create bonds among theyoung children and strengthen friendships,’said Tutu.
He said that he hope that more townshipsschools could play chess schools would playthe sport.
‘If it is played in school it could permeateinto the community and it is through initia-tives like these that we can grow the sport,‘said Tutu.
Two weeks ago we featured learners fromSinako High School in Khayelitsha that es-tablished their own chess club.
They were part of the exhibition in Gu-gulethu and also received the book lastweek.
Okuhle Tshiwo, a grade 11 learner, saidthat he found the book very informative.
You can learn a lot from the book if youare starting to play chess.
Even when you have been playing for awhile there is a lot you can learn,’ he noted.
Kobese is recognised internationally both
as a master and FIDE Trainer, which qualifi-cations he acquired in 2005.
He has won the South African Closed threetimes, in 1998, 2003 and 2011 and the SouthAfrican Open twice, in 2004 and 2008, and be-came an International Master in 2005.
He played for South Africa in the ChessOlympiads of 1992, 1994, 1996, 1998, 2004, 2006,2008 and 2010.
Kobese is the author of Masidlale Uthim-ba, the first Xhosa chess book, published inJuly 2015 and translated from a version hewrote in Zulu nine years before

Vuyani win makes it two in a rowMBONGISENI MASEKO
Vuyani Primary School has done itagain,; this time they have walkedaway with six medals gained during a
Literacy Week contest held in Cape Townlast week. The Gugulethu school outshined six other
schools that participated in the Xhosa andEnglish reading competition.Just last week, City Vision reported that
the school made wonders at the Metro Cen-tralEducationDistrictMathematicsCompe-tition, at Alexander Sinton SecondarySchool in Athlone, in which the school hadwon six top positions. The competition was part of the Annual
National Assessments (ANA) which is set totake place from September 15 to September18.In the literacy competition, a number of
Grade 6 and Grade 7 learners from schoolswere vying for the top positions.Lukhanyo Matomane, a Grade 6 leaner,
has won the overall position for Xhosa read-ing.Iva Qhamfane, a Grade 6 learner, came
second in the samecategory, whileElila Sok-waliwa, also a Grade 6 learner, came third.Zintle Gobo came first in English reading
while Philela Magobiyane obtained the sec-ond spot. Both are Grade 7 learners.Their teacher Michael Mqombo said al-
though the competition was “tough”, hisbcharges fought tooth and nails to achievethe best results.“I feel very happy, because itwas our first,
and we managed to win accolades. Thelearners did us proud. There were lot of peo-ple who attended the competition, but ourlearners were not scared at all. They were so confident,” Mqombo said.IsiXhosa teacher Andile Mpontshana,
said the competition was good as it also pro-
motes indigenous languages.“It makes learners understand the impor-
tance of their home languages such as Xho-sa.We have to promote our languages and be
proud of our cultures,” Mpontshana said.Matomane said she was on cloud nine for
such an achievement in their debut year inthe literacy category.“I amvery happy. Itwas tough, butwe told
ourselves that we have to work hard to win.We were not scared at all.The good teaching style that our teachers
use also helped us a lot to win,” she said.

Local musos off to play at Rocking the DaisiesZETHU GQOLA
The Rocking the Daisies Festival will show-case DJs from Khayelitsha, Langa and Gu-gulethu for the first time in as many years. After a decade in existence and on 10 Octo-
ber, the festival will launch a new stagewhere Bridges for Music will showcase thefinest talent from the townships of CapeTown. For most of these artists, this will be their
biggest stage performance to date, exposingthem to a ‘white’ market for the first time.Lunga Jelwana, aka DJ Kop said: “Music
has no colour or race but a form of unity andindeed a universal language. It’s an opportu-nity and platform for growth for artistst,”DJ Fosta added: “A lot of us were intro-
duced to Bridges for Music by friends andlater attended theworkshops inLanga town-ship. Being a part of Rocking the Daisies isreally amazing for us,”.“A lot of us have never attended the show
before. We have only heard about it andwatched the videos and after-movies.”“Getting in the white market is always a
challenge for DJs playing in the township. This will be an opportunity for everyone to
market themselves. It will also help us seeif our performance can really work for thewhite market as it always does elsewhere. In short, we will do our best to make sureno one forgets us after the night,” he adds. The inclusion of the Bridges for Music
stage at Rocking the Daisies will provide aplatform for previously unknown artists totap into a different market, help unify theCape Townmusic scene and assist these art-ists in networking. With a lot of the DJs onthe lineup planning to attend thewhole festi-val from 1 to 4 October, they will have ampletime to explore a differentworld and domar-
ket research.“I have cancelled some gigs just to be free
for that weekend. I want to learn more fromother performers and how they manage togive a good performance to the people andsupporters of Daisies,” says Gugulethu’sMasixole Dunjana aka DJ Dada Dunjana.“The Bridges For Music stage will helptownship artists gain more experience play-ing at big festivals and to a white crowd. It’sgoing to give us a lot of exposure as we willbe playing for a diverse range of culturesaround the country and also visitors fromother countries. It’s a hugemarket and a bigopportunity not to be wasted. I also thinkthat it will help us to change issues of racethat we face in the local music scene,” hesays.Coming with a completely different genre
and set-list to the other DJs who will be onstage is Lebohang Letsimo, aka S2 lEbz DJfrom Khayelitsha.“I started playing in 2013 under the gui-
dance of one of Cape Town’s most successful[white] DJs, Simon Ringrose (DJ Sibot), andhave since been working harder to pull inthe white market. As township DJs, we aretrying by all means to play at big festivals,”says Letsimo. The announcement of the second stage on
the opening night of the festival has sparkedconsiderable interest.Perhaps other festivals, as big as Rocking
the Daisies, can learn from this great stepin our local music industry, and also incor-porate township artists in their lineups.DJs from Khayelitsha, Langa and Gugulethu on a new stage, adding colour to what has seemed in the past to be a mostly ‘white’ lineup..

A Tambo Village family has been leftwith unanswered questions after thedisappearance of their sister after
shewas takenbyanambulance lastmonth. On Thursday 27 August, a frail Ntombe-khaya Manyamalala (41) had been sick thewhole day waiting for the ambulance thatwas called at 10:00 but only arrived around20:20.According to her sister Phuthuma Mntun-jani they were relieved that she finally re-ceived medical attention and that thingswere only going to get better. But theywerepainfullywrongas she foundthat the following morning that eventhough her sister was taken by the ambu-lance she was never admitted at the Hano-ver Park Community Health Centre (DayHospital) as they expected or any hospital.“When I arrived at the hospital at around
9:00 on Friday morning to check up on herI could not believe what I was told. They told me that no one by her name wasadmitted at the hospital. I thought maybeher name was misspelled or she admittedas anunknown,” said the distraught sister. She said all her attempts were fruitless asshe visited Mitchell’s Plain and GrooteSchuur hospitals but no luck.“I even went to the morgue but I stillcouldn’t find her. I was assisted by a hospi-tal worker who connected me to the ambu-lance department where I was told that thetwo paramedics were not on duty that day.The lady that answered the phone told methat they confirmed that they left my sisterat the Hanover Park CHC but the hospitalcontinues to disputes this,” she told CityVision. She said that this was a horrible time forthe family as they were worried about themother of two’s ill health might deterio-
rate.“We have absolutely no idea where shemight be and it’s really hard on me as I’munemployedandhave to spendmoney trav-elling around looking for her.She was too ill to walk I really don’t knowwhere she would go to,” she said.Robert Daniels, spokesperson for the pro-vincial medical emergency and forensicpathology services, said that according totheir records Manyamalala was admittedat the Hanover Park CHC.
Various attempts by City Vision to solicita comment from the provincial health de-partment failed as the department couldnot respond at the time of going to print.
Tambo Village woman Ntombekhaya Manya-malala has been missing since August aftershe was last seen when an ambulance wastaking her to hospital.

Langapolicewarn ofcrimeLanga police officers are raisingawareness about high rise of robber-ies, burglaries and carjacking in thearea. This comes after they have noticed
an increase in street robberies, bur-glaries as well as carjacking com-plaints, in the past few weeks. In most cases people are being
robbed in the mornings when theygoing to work and back. Firearmsand knives are used to threaten thevictims. Cell phones are themost tar-geted valuables. Burglaries andhouse robberiesmostlyhappensovernight, and expensive clothing andhouse hold goods like television(TV), sound systems and other valua-ble items are targeted. In some casescriminals kick and break the doorsor windows and rob people whilstthey are sleeping. Residents are ad-vised to walk in groups especiallywhen they go to and from work. Youmust scream loud when you are be-ing robbed, walk in streets wherethere is enough light or well illumi-nated and avoid using dark passagesor quite streets where there are nopeople. Motorists should be vigilantat all times when driving during thenight especially at intersections. Al-ways be alert when you are parkingor approachingyourhouse. If you seeany suspicious vehicle or peoplenearby your house do not stop ratherdrive to the police station and ask forassistance.
Philippi now launches the ‘Hub’SPINDOG MOTSAMAI
An old cement factory in Philippi whichhas undergone a multimillion-randmetamorphosis, has now also been
launched as ‘The Hub’.It is part of the burgeoning Philippi Vil-
lage precinct that will, over the next fewyears, also include a four-storey hotel, anightclub, a private hospital and an educa-tion zone - as well as the biggest “container”shopping mall in the country. The factory was initially purchased by
The Business Place Philippi in early 2000,part of a greater long-term vision to trans-form the surrounding and marginalised ar-ea into a thriving ‘central suburbs’, and wassubsequently refurbished as a thesis projectin sustainable design by Cape Town archi-tect, Philip Briel.Operating since 2005, the building has, un-
til recently, provided the residents of thecommunity with much-needed businesssupport services. Now, officially launched as The Hub, it
goes one giant leap further towards support-ing the overall vision for the precinct; to pro-viding secure, accessible and affordable in-frastructure that allows members of thecommunity the ability to meet, collaborateand, importantly, locate their businesses lo-cally.Located in the heart of the Cape Flats,
Philippi is a large township and industrialarea with a population of approximately 500000.As with many other townships, the area
isunder-developedandunder-serviced,witha high unemployment rate.General Manager of the Philippi Village,
Amor Strauss said the “entrepreneurship isoften a means of survival in townshipswhere jobs are scarce.“Driven by the desperate need to earn
money, many entrepreneurs start theirbusinesses without adequate funding, infra-structure or knowledge.Limited access to these vital resources se-
verely compromises their chances for suc-cess.”The vision behind The Hub, and the great-
ermixed-use Philippi Village, is to create vi-brant, creative ‘new urban space’ in whichto work, learn, create and play.’A space where two worlds – that of the
Philippi township and the rest of Cape Town– can meet and interact.Explains Strauss, “We wanted it to be an
interesting space, built primarily for the lo-cals, but also that others can visit, utiliseand enjoy. On top of this, she says,” we’re looking to
stimulate local economy and see a reductionof daily migratory patterns, with more cashrecycled within the community.”
A performance group from Philippi High School kept the guests enthralled at the launch.
Spotlight fell on entrepreneur Luvuyo Rani. Rashay Magan, Sujean Property Investments.Premier Helen Zille was one of the speakers.

People who live in shacks and backyards burnt tyres and rubbish earlier today in Langa. Theyalleged that other people have jumped the waiting list for units in a new block of flats, leavingthem without homes. PHOTOS: MASIXOLE FENI
MASIXOLE FENI
A number of protesters in Langa werearrested for public disturbance afterburning tyres, amid accusations that
officials involved in a project to build hous-ing units accepted bribes.
The block of flats in question are part ofthe City of Cape Town’s efforts to eradicateapartheid-era hostels and turn them intofamily units.
According to the City, the 463 units thatare being built on the Old Depot Site in Lan-ga are part of the first phase of a projectwhich will construct 1,300 units in the nextfive years.
Councillor Benedicta van Minnen, in astatement condemned the “violent and de-structive behaviour of a small group ofyouths who are infringing on the rights ofthe broader community of Langa. While werespect the right of residents to protest, ag-
gressive and illegal behaviour is utterly un-acceptable.”
“The first beneficiaries, some of whomhave been waiting for decades for a decenthousing opportunity, were scheduled tomove into units last week.
The ongoing protests and instigation bya small group of youths, who are not repre-senting the interest of the broader commu-nity of Langa, prevented this from happen-ing. Construction was suspended due to theongoing protest action in this area.” It alsostated, “It must be noted that engagementsabout the allocation of units and the projectin general have been in-depth, inclusive andthorough over months.
A clear process was agreed upon. Some ofthese families have been living in the terri-ble conditions prevailing in the Langa hos-tels for the past 40 years and we will not al-low this group of protestors to delay ourproject.”
These are flats in question.
Chaos ensued as roads were blockaded and traffic had to be diverted.

Building bridges to better livesA call centre inDiepRiver isn’t the solu-
tion to South Africa’s massive youthunemployment problem, but through
an innovative partnership it has given over400 first-time job seekers valuable work ex-perience and improved their lives.Rashida Sader, head of HR at Direct Axis,
explains that what drives the initiative isn’tmotivated by social investment or charity, but business imperatives.
“Like most good ideas, in essence it’s quitesimple. Our call centre is the engine-room ofour business. As the business grew we had toexpand the call centre. The challenge was tofind the right people quickly.”This led to Direct Axis teaming up with
Harambee Youth Employment Accelerator.Harambee bridges the gap for the thou-
sands of learners whomatriculate and gradu-ate each year, but aren’t ready for the work-
place. It’s a free service, which assesses
applicants for potential, teachesthem about employer’s minimum ex-pectations, such as punctuality andpresentation and then bridges theskills gap for specific careers by pro-viding work readiness skills.“This is where the partnership has
worked so effectively,” explains Ra-shida.“In a financial services call centre,
we require a particular skill set, in-cluding good numeracy and literacyskills and financial knowledge.Harambee ensures the candidates
meet these basic requirements.”As the partnership has developed,
so the training has evolved based onDirect Axis’ feedback.“When we took on the first Haram-
bee graduates,we put themona sepa-rate, more intensive internal induc-tion and training course to other re-cruits.This is no longer the case. Now all
new recruits undergo the same Di-rect Axis training, which is testament tohow well Harambee has tailored its pro-gramme to meet our needs.“It’s a shining example of successful co-
operationbetweenbusiness andcivil socie-ty,” says Rashida. The enhanced training has had other
benefits, increasing the retention of theHarambee recruits and improving their ca-reer prospects.Mpho Mpongo, from Gugulethu, who
started as a call centre agent has gone onto become a team leader. It has also wider social benefits. Besides
restoring the recruits’ hope and self-confi-dence, many are also the sole breadwin-ners in their families and their success hasimproved the entire household’s circum-stances.Direct Axis employs some 1 500 people at
its Diep River campus. When Mpongo matriculated in 2007 at
the age of 16 he had aspirations of becominga sound engineer. After school he attendeddifferent schools and colleges, studyingvari-ous courses until, in 2012, he felt he neededto settle down and get a job.He heard about Harambee from a friend
and successfully applied. He felt the pro-gramme not only gave him a better perspec-tive about starting out on a career, but alsoprepared him to get a job. After two months at Harambee he was
granted an interview at Direct Axis and gota job as a call centre agent. He has since beenpromoted to become a team leader.“This job has meant a lot to me. Not only
am I responsible and able to make my ownway in life, but I’ve also earned self-respectas well as the respect of my peers and com-munity. Being able to be my own person hasmade a huge difference and I’m now able togive back to my mom, who sacrificed somuch to raise me.”

Gospel musos visit Mother CityMANDLA MAHASHE
This past weekend music lovers had adifferent taste to things when variousartists from recently formed record
label, Otrulega Music Group visited theMother City.
Founded by businessman Mandla Lam-ba in 2012, the label, which has becomepopularly known as OMG, brought itscharges down to the Cape townships.
OMG comprises of some of the mostpromising raising stars in the gospel in-dustry such as Mzoxolo Rafani and NqobileNgidi as well as industry veterans such asThembinkosi Booi and M-Siya.
The group includes Buhle Hlangulela, adamsel that has also been in the musicbusiness for a while as a backup singer andcomposer.
She was also part of the award winningduo Snethemba, popular for their hit“Ubani othe abazalwane bayabhora” a cou-ple of years ago.
They visited local malls as well aschurches and attended events with the aimof bringing their music closer to the musiclover from the Cape.
Thembinkosi Booi said: “When I re-leased my last album I was based here inthe Mother City and the love and supportI received made me realised that thisshould be one of the first places that I cometo to present my new album,”.
Booi shot to fame in the early 2000s withhis hit song “Usathanaujumperamafence”.
He has gone to release seven more al-bums, with his 8th studio album titled Bay-
ede released by his new label.“As expected, the album is very particu-
lar, but you can also ascertain that thereis a lot of maturity in my music.”
Another veteran gospel musician, M-Si-ya has just released his 9th studio albumand says that he was not at his most contentstage of his musical career.
“After releasing so many albums and not
getting the breakthrough desired, you startto question your talent and whether or notyou are good enough.
With this album I have worked with oneof the most talented individuals such asDumi Mkokstad and Malizole Fololo.
Usually, I did most things in my albumslike composing, writing and producing butthey have brought a different edge and it
has come out beautifully.I’m very content with this album and I
hope the audience also receives it well,” hesaid.
So You Want To Sing Gospel contestantsNqobile Ngidi and season one finalistMzoxolo also are offering their new albumstitledUyisiphephelo Sami andKonke kufez-iwe respectively.

RUGBY: Young protege aiming high
‘Litsha ladmakes mark
SPINDOG MOTSAMAI
It is a fact, hard work and dedica-tion takes you to higher planes andthis rings true for Khayelitsha’s
rising rugby star, Xolisa Guma.Guma,18, is already a name that
rugby historians are beginning to fa-miliarise themselves with, is gainingapplause with each games he plays. He rose through the ranks playing
for Swaartland High, becoming thefirst black player tomake it into a Bo-land provincial teamat the tender ageof 16 in 2013.Fast forward to 2015, and Guma has
moved on to be the toast of Maritz-burgHigh inKwaZuluNatalwhereheexcels in the wing position. The Grade 11 learner also plays for
Sharks Under-18 side and is hopefulthat soon he will break into the firstteam. His dedicationhas seenhimdrafted
into the CravenWeek under-18 teamsfor two successive years.“I knowmydreamsare big and that
I must work hard to achieve them,”he said.Askedwhyheopted to accept aKZN
scholarship, Guma, said he “wantedto get out of the comfort zone(of homeadvantage) and explore(the world)”.“When Sharks came for me, I saw
this a s the biggest opportunity forme. I am sending amessage that a boy
fromKhayelitsha canalso do this,” hesaid. Listening to Guma speak, youwould be forgiven for mistaking himfor a motivational speaker. He is pas-sionate about “unearthing role mod-els who can boast about being bornand raised in Khayelitsha”.
Taking us to his important victorywhere Sharks met the Golden Lionsin the U18 Craven Week final at Stel-lebosch, Guma shows us yet a sign ofa young man who believes in God.“Itwas a toughgameand Ihada lots
of missed opportunities. The clockwas ticking, I prayed to God to helpme,” he said.In the crowd there was his mom,
Nyamie, who had come with rest ofthe extended family to see Guma playtop notch rugby.
With the Lions leading 13-10 thetall, lean winger received the ball onthe halfway line, gassed away fromthe first defender, before unleashinga brutal step to get past his oppositewing, just inside the touchline. The cross-field defence couldn’t get
to him in time and he scored in thecorner.
“My family was sitting in thestands, so it was a very special mo-ment for me. It’s the greatest try I’veever scored. But the credit must go toGod, my teammates and the coachingstaff, because we worked really hardfor this victory.
Xolisa Guma on his wayto scoring one of hisbest tries thus far.
