The streets of Nyanga and some parts ofPhilippi disintegrated into chaos on

Tuesday morning when belligerent taxidrivers burnt down two Golden Arrow busesand stoned vehicles.

Four company cars had been hurled withrocks, one van set alight, with some motor-ists and commuters injured.

The taxi drivers pelted any governmentvehicle on sight with two shots fired at thetaxi rank resulting in a stampede as com-muters tried to flee from the bullets. Therewere no serious injuries reported in that in-cident.

The cause of the unrest, according to thetaxi drivers was the continued harassmentof their lot by city law enforcement officialstargeting illegal vehicles and drivers withoutstanding fines.

Three journalists, two from the Daily Sunand Ground Up, were attacked when theywere caught capturing images of the anar-chists.

“A Daily Sun vehicle was among the vehi-cles that were stoned. The photographer andher colleagues were allegedly approached byabout 20 taxi drivers who instructed themnot to take photos. They broke the photogra-phers camera, took her cell phone and CD’s,”said Nyanga police spokesperson CaptainNtomboxolo Sitshitshi.

She said that the photographer also alleg-es that when she drove away to the stationshe could see that her colleagues were beingassaulted

In New Eisleben, two people were serious-ly injured when the bus they were travellingin was burnt.

“We had to jump out of the windows whenwe saw rocks were thrown into the bus. Itwas chaos as people were shoving each othertrying to flee. One lady’s leg was broken withthe bone piercing here skin,” said one visi-bly shaken commuter.

JP Smith, Mayco member for safety andsecurity, revealed that on Tuesday morningcity officials undertook the operation whichis believed to be the tipping point.

He said that a total of 16 vehicles were im-pounded, 15 drivers did not have valid oper-

ating licences and one was operating con-trary to the conditions of their licence.

“Officials served 51 warrants valued atR52 700 were served, issued nine warnings,arrested three drivers for outstanding war-rants, and issued 194 fines for various trans-gressions, including 36 unlicensed drivers,”he said.

Smith said that members of the local taxiassociation tried to persuade officials to stopthe operation but when that failed they is-sued a threat.

“They left the area, stating that the ‘situa-tion will develop as it goes on’ – a statementtaken by our staff as a direct threat.

A short while later, word was re-ceived that buses were beingstoned at the Nyanga terminus andthat roads were being blockaded byprotestors,” he said.

The officials along with SAPSdropped the operation to attend to the skir-mishes.

“I condemn the actions of the taxi driversin the strongest terms. We cannot condonethis type of behaviour, as it is aimed at in-timidating and undermining our enforce-ment efforts.

I have said it before and I will say it again:no one is above the law and we will not allow

this thuggish behaviour to derail our effortsat ensuring safer roads through compliancein the public transport industry,” hewarned. Bronwen Dyke, spokesperson forGolden Arrow Bus company said that theservice was suspended in Nyanga and Phil-ippi until the situation improved. At thetime police stated that one man, 21, was ar-rested for stoning vehicles in Nyanga.

Protesting parents and members of theschool’s governing body at SokhanyoPrima-ry School in Gugulethu allegedly threwstonesat childrenentering thegates onMon-day morning, barring them from attendingclasses..Tyres were burnt outside the school gate,

thus damaging its automatic motor.The parents said they were taking issue

with the school principal because of his bel-ligerent attitude.One parent said they were unhappy that

three members of the kitchen staff who pre-pared food for the learners were fired andnew ones hired by principal Thetha Sithole.“Those women were just told that the con-

tracts were finished and they were left with-out a job. The SGB was not involved in thisprocess,”. She charged that the cooks weresupposed to be sourced from learner par-ents. “They should be parents of learners inthis school and we don’t know who theyare...he didn’t involve us,” she said, refusingto divulge her name.The newSGBwas elected inMarch but the

executive was not selected after teachers de-cided to opt out due to oustanding grievan-ces.Speaking to City Vision, Sithole said that

he had instructed the school’s feedingscheme coordinator to employ new workersas agreements with the current had lapsed.“I told her that I was looking for parents

who were not troublesome and actuallyknew how to do the job. She(cordinator) in-terviewed people and they were hired. I wasnever involved in hand-picking individu-als,” he said.Sithole alleged that the group had ulterior

motives for staging the protest and stoningyoukids. “Theyhave ahidden agenda for do-ing this, and I just cannot help it,” he added.However, the group denied hurling rocks

at children and burning the tyres but admit-ted to halting them fromentering the school.“We want to show him that we are fed up

with his stubborn attitude. He was fired inall the schools he has worked at in the pastbecause of his ways,” said the livid parent.Sithole said that he would open a case of

damage to property and intimidationagainst the parents.

and Rays skills were put to great use.

“We sang kwela music which is now known asjazz,”.It turns out Ray was not always a pennywhistler,

as he used to be a guitarist, but was always fascvi-nated by the pennywhistlers.“I listened to themplay...how theymove their fin-

gers around the instrument,” he added.Being a full-time musician was the last thing on

his mind, he says, but the bug bit once played theflute.Other than the flute, his passion was writing.“Playing the pennywhistle is important to me be-

Liberation fighters should not loose hopeThe process of verifying cadres who foughtin the Azanian National Liberarty Army(Azanla) so that they can be enlisted in theDepartment of Military Veterans (DMV) isstill underway.Western Cape’s Azanla commander Zola

Mosia said they were working with nationalgovernment to ensure that all their cadreswere verified.“We did not participate in the almagama-

tion of forces because we were suspicious ofbeing absorbed by the defence force. Thismeans our cadres do not enjoy the benefitslike othe military veterans,” said Mosia.He said the process of verification has

been underway since last year and the thirdround will be announced soon.Azapo provincial chairperson Godfrey Af-

rika said it was important that Azanla fight-ers attend these verification panels.

“Their recognition is long overdue andwe encourage all those who were involvedto come out,” he said.Azanla regional secretary Lungiswa Som-

lota said a few number of their cadres has

come forward but they are expecting morepeople to attend the next round.“The verification process is structured in

Evicted Philippi residents who illegally oc-cupied vacant land have vowed to moveback, even as police and Law Enforcementofficers vowed to evict them again.They arrived at the site armed with tools

to clean the bush next to Joe Gqabi stationand also with ropes to mark their yards, be-fore the police instructed them to disperseat about 7am.They came from Gugulethu, Marcus Gar-

vey, Lower Crossroads, Marikana, KTC andother surrounding areas.Xolani Joja, Sanco chairperson in Philip-

pi, who facilitated a meeting with the resi-dents in the area, encouraged themto invadethe land.“We encourage them to build their shacks

in the land. They must not only mark theirterritories, but they must build. They havea right to take the land, because it belongsto their forefathers. Residents will fight suc-cessfully for the land as they did in Mari-kana.Policemust stoparresting residents orshoot at themwhen they take land,” he said.Joja said the residents took a decision to

come back before midnight to erect theirshacks.He also said there was a decision that has

been taken, but it was not clear by who,which will see all vacant spaces around the

province being forcefully occupied by thosewho are in need to build shacks.Councillor Patrick Pietersen, of Ward 88,

said hewas “not aware” about the land inva-sion and that he was going to make a followup.Pietersen also said it was not immediately

clear who owns the land.The number of residents who wanted to

occupy the land was not clear.Sphokazi Quphe, 32, said shewill also stop

at nothing to erect her shack in the area.Quphe, who rents a room at the back of a

house in Gugulethu, said she wants a spaceof her own now.“I will come back here to erect my shack.

It has alwaysbeenmydreamtohavemyownspace,” she said.She stays alone in the room that she rents

and she is unemployed.JosephMakeleni, 44, who owns a shack in

Marikana, said he came to support the resi-dents, because they also supported them towin their effort to win their area, about 10months ago.“People will keep on occupying every va-

cant land they see. The projects to build RDPhouses were stopped and we do not knowwhy. Residents resort to violence, becausethere areno service deliveries in their areas.Wewill continue taking the land,”Makelenisaid.

A group of residents from Langaand surrounding areas are see-ing red after “wonderful”invest-ment scheme turned out to bedud.The group, which claims to

have about 190 members, is ac-cusing a local women of runninga pyramid scheme.They say that the woman

asked them to deposit aboutR2000 with the promise of re-turns of up to R30 000.According to them, thewoman

arrived from the Eastern Capein 2014 to make a presentationon this “wonderful investmentopportunity” .Sinethemba was the name of

the investment armNomsa Kenana said: “She told

us that the money was guaran-teed and that we would need tohave paid up by the 5 Decemberwith the deposits into our bankaccounts made on the 15 of thesame month.“Itwaswonderful andwewere

all keen and she even made thedeal sweeter by telling us thatwe don’t need to pay the fullamount. We could invest R180everymonth,” she said. She saidthat the woman also sweetenedthe deal by offering up to R10 000to assist members with familyfunerals, weddings and initia-tion ceremonies.By June they were told by this

lady that each member shouldhave deposited at least R1080 bythe first of June and many did,she said.“In December people rushed

to finish the payments andmanyof us did. Wewere excited on the15th andwewaited patiently butthe money was never deposited.We calledher and she said that

it will be sorted and we havebeen waiting for the money eversince,” she said.The group opened a case of

fraud against the woman inMarch when they found out thatshe was in Khayelitsha present-ing to other groups.“We went there with police

and she was taken in for ques-tioning but she continued tomake promises. We are sick andtired of her promises,” she said.She said that the members re-cruited family members andfriends to this scheme and as aresult there were now tensionsas people are calling themthieves.When City Vision contacted

the woman she said she told themembers to be patient as therewas a misunderstanding.“In the beginning I explained

to them that themoneywould beinvested in MultiMix line mar-keting scheme. We need to fill 6boards there and so far we havefour and the only way we can dothat is if people recruited morepeople,” said the woman.She said that shewasplanning

on sourcing funding from “over-seas people” to fill in the rest ofthe boards.“I am working on that so that

they get all their money and Ihope I can double it for thosethat want to leave the project,”she said.Langa police spokesperson

Warrant Officer Odwa Makupu-la said that theywere investigat-ing the matter.“The suspect has not been ar-

rested as the investigating offi-cer needs more evidence fromthe complainants and this hasbeen hard to come by as thereare a few members that havecome forward,” said Makupula.

Following a week of bloodshed, Nyanga po-lice are pleading for the community to assistin the solving of murders.

According to SAPS since the 6th of Aprilfive lifeless bodies has been discovered inthe policing precinct.

“On Monday 06 April, Mesuli Mbeteni,was found lying on the floor with multiplehead injuries near Nyanga Terminus. It issuspected he was assaulted with stones. Hewas rushed to hospital and died on arrival.

Another victim, SiyabongaMboni, was al-so found assaulted and burnt near SigcawuPrimary School in Crossroads, he also diedin hospital,” Nyanga police spokespersonNtomboxolo Sitshitshi told City Vision.

She said that another bodywas discoveredon Thursday 9 April in Chris Hani Street inBrowns Farm.Hewas also allegedly assault-ed with stones which were found near hisbody.

“On Saturday 11 April, three men wereshot at whilst in Daffodil Street in HeinzPark. A 42-year-old Dovonovan Pienaar diedon the scene but two other men (21 and 25)survived.

A case of murder and attempted murderis being investigated. Another man wasfound stabbed at the gate of his yard inMpo-zolo Street in Philippi. The suspects andmo-tive are unknown at this stage,” she said.

She said that another man was found shotdead once in the head inMessiah in Cossovoinformal settlement.

song was very appropriate when looking atthe current situation in South Africa withregards to recent xenophobic attacks.“It’s just really a prayer,” he says, adding:

The Western Cape has alwaysbeen proud of its performancewith regards to the safety meas-ures applied during the initia-tion of our boys into manhood.This is despite the negative

press, especially from the main-stream media.Injuries do occur and some-

times death is reported duringthe season, especially in sum-mer.We should, however, be care-

ful to differentiate between therite of passage and the practicesof unscupulous individuals.Umeluko is not circumcision,

but a part of this process thatconstitutes less than half a min-ute but it is a crucial part of theprocess.The concern though is that

the response to this process isthe introduction of different cir-cumcision tools ranging fromclamps to Israeli developedtools. However, bayawuphosaumhlola.The crucial aspect of umeluko

is the after care. It is the roleplayed by amakhankatha andthe families in providing sup-port and physical care to the ini-tiate.That is where we fall short as

a community. That is where thetraining of those responsible forthe after care is crucial.It is where most families fall

short in identifying and ap-pointing the right, experienced,disciplined and knowledgeableindividuals to guide the initi-ates on their journey to man-hood and responsibility as fu-ture leaders of the communitiesthat they come from.It is at this point that real

learning and wisdom is sacri-ficed at the altar of economic ex-pedience. It is at this point thatfamilies appoint the local unem-ployed, irresponsible, drinkingand sometimes drug inducedlayabouts to take on this crucialtask.It is at this juncture that the

of passage, the transition to an-other stage in life, the opportu-nity to learn life lessons, is lost.It does not necessarily have to

be felled as those available areto provide the shelter and mostof all, the crucial aspect of priva-cy and seclusion for those un-dergoing the process.The role of parents cannot be

erty Trust was registered in 1998,and the settlement agreement wassignedwith the government in 2001and the trust received the titledeeds to the land in February 2004.Opportunities have come and

gone, considering that the best dealfor the trust would have been if thejoint venture agreement with TheAmdec Consortium had been real-ised in 2007, which would have giv-en the trust R600 million plus 26%of the shares in amultibillion prop-erty development.But someof the then trustees pre-

ferred to ruin that deal. Then therecession came in 2008 and 2009,none of the big property developerswere interested.

A few months ago, the Master ofthe High Court removed MessrsRussell Kokoma, Vusi Ngwevela,Nombulelo Kwetana, Maxie Mah-loane, Nomdu Siboto, Xoli Meng-qane and Tsepo Mayo from theboard of trustees of 2013.During the time they held office,

chose to fight among themselvesfor control of the trustand forgotabout the beneficiaries.The only real progress was when

Silinga was chairperson.It is the time to get things done,

and those who were working andare familiar with how thingsshould be, have made themselvesavailable to be elected as trustees.Vote for them at the general

meeting to be held coming Sundayand there will be some progresswithin a few months.Each family will receive the first

pay-out within three or fourmonths.The time has now come to face

the truth, if the trustees do not en-

ter into a joint venture to developthe land, theCity andProvincewilluse it for low cost housing, and thevalue of the land will be worthless.Because roads, electricity, water

and sewage has to be built and thecost of that is more or less whateach plot will be worth. For unde-veloped land without rezoning andinfrastructure the maximumworth is R25 to R30 million.Each family would have got in

excess of R1,500000 if the deal in2007 had been done.The interim trustees adopted a

resolution to enter into a joint ven-ture to develop the land. This reso-lution has to be approved by thegeneral meeting.Elect new trustees, and not those

Who owns what in freedomAs we approach the 21st anniversary ofour freedom, we must begin to look atthe many things that are associated withfreedom of our people, especially theblack majority who were previouslydisadvantaged.

From the 27th of April 1994 manythings have changed and many peoplehave benefited a lot. Life expectancy hasrisen. Indeed the road to free for all hastaken place. Socially things have changedas people now can shop and stand in thesame queue to buy anything at any timethey feel like having.

Even we have malls in Gugulethu,Khayelitsha and Philippi plaza just toname a few. However there is a question

that I cannot answer every time I thinkabout it and it leads to other questions.Who own these economical hubs in ourtownships?

Is it one of us or still under the handsof those who were benefiting and stillbenefiting as we continue to be justconsumers but not owners of means ofproduction? Is this the freedom we werestriving for?

A freedom that we see our people onlybenefiting by being the manpower tomove the hard labour force but not onmanagement and ownership of theeconomic hubs in our townships.

Not seeing the world is theroot cause of our problemsI am really embarrassed by the recentevents engulfing our country.

Most people in our country do nottravel to other countries. Let alone tourinternally, not even from one province toanother, but one township to another.

There are people in Langa townshipwho feel proud to proclaim that theyhave not been to Gugulethu in the past 15years.

A distance barely 12 kilometres!I have travelled to all nine provinces in

South Africa. I have met people I couldnot have dreamt of in my wildest dreams.The experiences have enhanced my livingstandards. My purpose in life has alsobeen strengthened. The exchanges withpeople of different ethnic groupings havebroadened my scope in life.

The most memorable journey I everundertook was to Gaborone in Botswana.This journey opened my eyes in a lot ofways. My late uncle promised me that if Iwanted to stay and not come back I waswelcome. I was tempted enough by suchexperiences. I was on school vacation andthe authorities knew of my whereabouts.

In that country education is free. Thepeople showered me with such hospitalityone would have thought I came from thea royal family.

Their level of education manifests itselfin the humility and command of lan-guage.

Even their hobos, a rare sight, commu-nicate clearly with strangers, a sign ofsufficient basic education.

Our government in can learn fromsuch countries. Our people are theproduct of the lack of good education.

White immigrants are spared theill-treatment, but African nationals are atthe receiving end of the wrath of ourignorant, uneducated people.

Oliver Tambo once said: “A nation thatdoes not cater for its youth is doomed tofailure.”

All the visuals on television showedour youth getting their hands dirty, ifonly to commit barbaric acts of murderand mayhem.

I am appalled and ashamed to be aSouth African after what transpired andwas splashed in the weekend papers.

The people watched without renderingassistance. I do sympathise with thefamilies who lost loved ones.

Malcolm X echoed this in his speech in1962:

“Who taught you to hate the roots of

the tree and not the tree?Who taught you to hate the race that

you belong to so that youdon’t want to be around each other?”Township kids were in full force in this

destructive act of violence and looting offoreign shops.

Some were young enough to be atschool sitting attentively in the classroomgetting life skills.

The government could have taken noteof all this when theft became rife inparliament.

Cellphones were stolen by so-calledhonourable members of the house.

These were treated as minor incidents.It went on to fraudulent travellingarrangements with agents resulting inundue enrichment. This can neverhappen in an educated nation.

Even the Mandela family contributed inthis embarrassment by giving GracaMandela the cold shoulder after the deathof our struggle icon. Winnie Madikizela-Mandela uttered sentiments about herMozambican origins. Nobody lambastedher.

The consequences for all South Afri-cans are very dire in Africa and inEurope. Recently, musicians had tocancel a concert in Zimbabwe because ofthese attacks. This was followed byfurther cancellations in London.

This amounts to loss of livelihood andSouth Africans complain when thesemusicians die poor. Some are buried aspaupers with nothing to show for theirtalent.

Orlando Pirates are known by manythroughout Africa as a very successfuland good team from SA but are unsure ofthe positive reception this time around.Hopefully, God will guide them throughto safety and success in their continentalgames.

I truly pray that Cape Town can leadthe country in showing all that being theMother City it is indeed profoundlyagainst Afrophobia. We also owe it toourself to be the city to educate thenation on umoja (oneness) in Africa!

It is quite appropriate to conclude withNina Simone’s lyrics in the song I Wish IKnew How it Would Feel to be Free, asshe states: “I wish you could know whatit means to be me then you would seeand agree that every man should befree.”

Lets take back the powerFreedom Day is based on the 27th April1994, our first democratic election.

As we are headed for local municipalityelections, political parties are starting tosharpen their prospective candidates topresent them very well to the broadersociety.

They are narrowing their list ofCouncillors and Proportional Representa-tives.

I personally think that as legible voterswe must start to identify what is it thatwe want rather than be told what is itthat we need by political parties.

The manifestos of the party must meetour criteria as the people.

Its high time that as the people we givethe mandate to parties. When we start toraise the bar and construct our road toemancipation. In a sense that will be truefreedom, where people will really governand be in charge of their freedom. Thismakes us not just voters but trendsetters

of this freedom.This will give us the chance to deal

with our social and economical challen-ges as we would give potential solutionsto our societal problems.

The truth of the matter here is that weknow our shortcomings and we know thesolutions to them, but all we need ispolitical will to sort out our problems.Now with this method we stand to gainweight as we would be calling shots asthe legal Voters.

When we do this, we will be taking thepower back to us the people. This willhelp us from the corrupt acts of council-lors to be visible only in the last twoyears of the official life.

In that way, we will be the vanguardsof our votes as we will monitor andevaluate councillors.

Free all liberation soldiersAll PAC aligned structures must revolt andforce the ANC to release APLA cadres fromjail.

For a nation that prides itself of being ademocracy observing human rights and therule of law, it is conundrum that there arestill freedom fighters who fought apartheidand are today in the prisons of this country.The release of formermembers of the Azani-an People’s Liberation Army (APLA) andothers is long overdone.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commis-sion (TRC)was one-sided truth and reconcil-iation. It penalised the victims of apartheidwho took up arms against a ‘crime againsthumanity’.

The authors of the TRC ignored the inter-national convention on the suppression andpunishment of the apartheid crimes. We seein the television the ANC government re-leasing Eugene De Kok from jail, but failingto release the former members of APLA andother political freedom fighters.

This means that the ANC, which is so re-vered and supported continues to sell out theblack people to the white settlers.

Who is the ANC and its government offi-cials committed to between the people ofAzania and colonisers.

Why is it easy for the ANC leaders, on one

hand, to forgive and release suppressors andmurderers of the black people, and keepMK,APLAandAZANLA freedom fighters in jail.

Whichpolitical regimemust come to liber-ate freedom fighters from the ANC govern-ment prisons?”

Many white settlers of the then minorityregime, Craig Williams, the Coetzees, theStrydoms andBassons of thisworld are free.

This demonstrates that the TRC deliveredto this nation the peace of the jackal and thelamb.

The jackal can eat the lamb any time itfeels hungry, and shall be forgiven.

It must be noted that one shiny day thepeople of South Africa shall revolt againstthis neo-liberalist tendency, neo-capitalismand imperialism of the ANC.

It is with great pleasure to have one of ourown, Langa born, Phatheka Mapoma as aSemi-finalist in theMiss Commonwealth SAPageant.I hooked up with Phatheka at one of the

trendiest restaurants, Full Stop in Park-hurst, Johannesburg. We ran a few ques-tions by her to get to know who she reallyis and what she stands for. This is how theinterview went:Q: So, tell us about Phatheka andwhat she

stands for?A: I was born Kwa-Langa eKapa and I am

and am not scared to speak my mind.Q: How did you get to be a Semi-Finalist

The nation mournsMoshoue’ s deathPresident Jacob Zuma onWednesday sent condolences tothe family of former Bafana Baf-ana midfielder John “Shoes”Moshoeu who passed away aftera long battle with cancer.

“We have lost an outstandingfootballer, a good role model forour youth and a committed andpatriotic South African,” Zumasaid.

“We wish to convey our heart-felt condolences to his family,friends as well as the entire foot-ball fraternity. May his soul restin peace.”

Moshoeu died on Tuesday aft-ernoon. His agent, Glyn Binkin,confirmed his death on Twitter.He was 49-years-old.

He retired from soccer in May2014 after spending several sea-sons with third-tier side Alexan-dra United.

Moshoeu played for KaizerChiefs from 1988-1993 and againfrom 2003 until 2006. He alsoplayed in the Turkish league forFenerbahce and Bursaspor from1997 until his return to South Af-rica in 2003.

‘Shoes’ was capped 73 timesfor South Africa and scoredeight times.

He was one of Bafana’s stand-out performers in their 1996 Af-rican Cup of Nations triumph,scoring four goals in the tourna-ment.

Meanwhile the Western CapeDepartment of Cultural Affairsand Sport also aired its “deepsadness to hear that former Baf-ana Bafana midfielder John“Shoes” Moshoeu has passedaway after a brave battle withcancer.

“ He was a role model for manyyoung players and showed howyou can achieve great heightsthrough hard work and dedica-tion. We need more sportspeoplelike him to show our young peo-

ple how they can take responsi-bility for their own sporting ca-reer paths,” said head of depart-ment Brent Walters.

He said that this is indeed abig loss in the soccer world.“Shoes left a legacy behind foryoung people who are just start-ing their careers. It is importantthat we honour his legacy andnot forget all that he has done forsoccer in our country.” he said.

Masidlale league spurs playersThe 2015 Spur Masidlale League kicked offat theNY49Stadium inGugulethuwhere theparticipating teams from Ilitha, Lehlohono-lo, Luzuko, Lwazi,Mseki, Sokhanyo, Sonwa-bo, Vukukhanya, Vuyane andXolani Prima-ry Schools took to the field with aplomb.Launched in 2005, the Spur Masidlale Soc-

cer Programmehas successfully used soccerto educate, inspire and empower young peo-ple and has now partnered with GrassrootSoccer (GRS) to manage the life skills com-ponent of the league.According to Khakhi Diala of the Spur

Group, theMasidlale programme is current-ly recognised as one of the leading youth soc-cer development initiatives in the country.“We started with 12 one-day coaching clin-ics, but the league has grown steadily andhas highlighted the huge need for initiativesthat provide a platform for youth develop-ment.Through the Masidlale programme we

teach kids both soccer and life skills and arevery excited about the partnership withGRS,” says Diala.Since founded in 2002, GRS has worked in

over 46 countries worldwide with over716,410 youth graduating from programmes

run byGRS and partners similar to the SpurMasidlale Soccer Development Programme.To ensure quality control and effective

mentorship, GRS will conduct a specialtraining session with local coaches leadingup to the official launch day events in CapeTown, Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg andDurban. Through a series of interactive ac-tivities and discussions, led by CaringCoaches, participants gain a tangible under-standing of a variety of social issues theyface and get a chance to practice the skillsnecessary for sustainable behaviourchange.Key curricular topics covered in a morn-

ing training session with local coaches whowill lead the life skills component of theleague include increased self-esteem, genderawareness, improved decision makingskills, increased ability to resist peer pres-sure as well as better communication skills.“The league helps kids to realise that

learning from others with experience can be

great fun, while also of huge benefit to thempersonally - and that is exactly what we aimto achieve with the Spur Masidlale Soccer
