But to fresh-meat lovers that has never been cause for concern, even as the facilities do not look appetising to the roving eye. “It is the freshly slaughtered and braaied meat we come here for... not even Mzoli’s can match the taste,” said a man who introduced himself only as Jama ka Sijadu. Mzoli’s is the popular restaurant in Gugs that attracts meat eaters from lands afar. But the sore sight and ramshackle struc- tures from which the business is run will be a thing of the past if a proposed abattoir fa- cilities project gets the go-ahead from the in- formal traders. The proposed project is a result of collabo- ration between the City of Cape Town and the Department of Agriculture. Siyabulela Mamkeli, Mayco member for Health told City Vision that the purpose of the project is to regulate the slaughter and trading. “It is to ensure that it is done in a healthy, hygienic and safe environment which com- plies with the legislation. The project will encompass informal trad- ing in areas like Nyanga and Gugulethu , he explained. The project is still at a draft stage and will be determined by the results of a feasibility study currently being conducted. The choice is between a mobile abattoir or a fixed structure, said Mamkeli. “The study is also expected to provide de- tails about how both models will work and how much each will cost to implement. Sub- ject to the study’s outcomes, various funding sources will be explored,” he said. We want to ensure that basic hygiene stan- dards are maintained. If the initial pilot project is successful, it will be rolled out to other areas. Mildred Maqegu, aka MamGo, has been working plying her trade there since since 1989. Mamgo, 58, told City Vision that she is looking forward to improvements as long as they don’t hamper their business. “We really need assistance regarding im- proving this place as we lack ablution facili- ties. We struggle with disposing unwanted animal waste and have limited access to wa- ter. The structures, made of corrugated biron and woodboards, are also old and unhealthy and should they come up with a solution we would welcome that as long as it does not mean we have to be relocated to another area where we won’t get as good a business as we do here,” she noted. She works with her two sons, and thus saves on the costs of paying a hired hand to slaughter the sheep. On a busy day, she said, she can slaughter up to three sheep. “Business is good here” she added She said that many of the traders weren’t holding their breaths, though, as govern- ment officials have proposed changes in the past but nothing happens. LAUGHING WITHlunga adam

Lobola not so easyto calculate todayLast week, I was quite amused to discov-er on social networks that there is a newLobola Calculator app in town, yet on theflipside it did make me stop and thinkfor a moment. From what I hear, it’s the brainchild of

a guy from Jozi. Sure some people canthink. How does it work? Well, all youhave to do after downloading the app onyour cellphone is to punch in details likeage, looks, education into the app andyour lobola is quickly calculated. Soperhaps in the very near future, it willno longer be cast in stone as to howmuch or how many cows you have to payto get that special someone to spend therest of your life with. I know that, in thisday and age, some guys think that lobolais just one big scam. I mean it’s not likeback in the day when people got marriedfor the right reasons and you knew youwere getting full value for your moneywhen you decided to take that giganticstep. So is paying lobola still relevant inthese ever-changing times? There areplenty of factors to look at as well, Iguess. You stay in a vat-n-sit relationship with

your girlfriend for years and you get allthe privileges of a married man – break-fast in bed, your laundry done for you,and well, the occasional swearword forsitting in front of the TV rather thanmowing the lawn. So when you havelived with someone for that long and youknow all there is to know about thatperson, plus you have kids together, doesn’t it feel like you are marriedalready? What’s the need of payinglobola? In the days we live in, there are only a

handful of girls who are “lobola-worthy”in any case. This statement will land mein trouble I know, but really, how is itpossible that you expect some man to payan exorbitant amount of money to makeyou his wife, while you’re out drinkingGuarana till the wee hours of the morn-ing? What happened to showing you’rewife material? The emergence of thislobola app also had me thinking aboutsuggestions been made in the pastregarding the payment of lobola. Somegents feel a certain amount should becast in stone as lobola and then yousubtract certain amounts according todifferent categories: does she have kids? What is her level of education? Is she avirgin? Was she previously married? It’squite funny, but would it not work if wetried it out? But then if that becomes thecase, then there goes the dream of manyladies out there, of walking down theaisle. Ag, shame! I mean why do I haveto break the bank for your daughter ifshe’s been around the block – if youcatch my drift? When I’m marrying (sorry, I doubt it’ll

ever happen in this lifetime– the word‘marriage’ itself gives me one hell of aheadache), it must feel like I’m getting anew car. Certainly not like I’m buying askorokoro from umakhelwane who’srelocating to the Eastern Cape to lookafter his cattle. I know there’s alwayssome kind of pressure on women to getmarried, for fear of ukududelwa nguJambase. And also for us young men,who constantly have to face the question:“Ude umthathe nini umfazi kwedini?”But really, someone needs to look at thislobola issue. Although the intent is good,it seems like daylight robbery nowadays.I’m not saying it should come cheap, butsome logic should be applied and a lotneeds to be taken into consideration. Thisreminds me of one guy who only forkedout R1 000 for his umakoti and promisedher family he would pay the rest later. They are still waiting.Well, maybe I need to reconsider my

views on this whole marriage thing then, because at least I do have 1k in my bankaccount.

Happy Feet ready to dazzle at the carnivalSiviwe Mbinda’s contribution to the com-munity is empowering about 70 boys andgirls to becomemoremotivated andwork to-wards a brighter future.Mbinda, a tourist guide in Langa, started

the Happy Feet Youth Project in 2007 withthe intention of providing a safe environ-ment which the children in his communitycan enjoy. Since then, he has used gumbootdancing to encourage the children’s psycho-logical and social development.Happy Feet has performed at the 2013 and

2014 Cape Town Carnival and Mbinda ex-plains that being part of the Carnival has ex-posed the children to a bigger stage for show-casing their talents. “When we first partici-pated in theCapeTownCarnival other eventorganisers took us more seriously, and as aresult we got more gigs. The children chore-ograph their own moves and it is amazingto see what they are capable of and how theytake ownership of their art. It makes themeven more proud!”The group has had the opportunity to per-

form in many prestigious events including;conferences, traditional ceremonies, hotels, dance competitions and even parliamentaryfunctions. “Cape Town Carnival has giventhese kids hope and continues to motivatethem in life”, says Mbinda. On a personal note, it has also taught him

to become a better leader. “I understand theimportance of planning ahead and how towork hard at producing quality work - wekeep going until we make it happen,” he ex-plains.When askedhow the children benefit from

being part of Happy Feet, Mbinda explainsthat it has had a positive impact on the chil-dren’s lives and helps them socially. “Hav-ing Happy Feet be part of Cape Town Carni-

val allows the children to meet with differ-ent groups of people, adapt to being indifferent social environments andworkwellwith others,” says Mbinda.“I would love to see Happy Feet on an in-

ternational scale and performing overseaswhichwould contribute to the children’s ed-ucation,” he concludesHappy Feet is set to perform at the fifth

annual Cape Town Carnival which will takeplace along theGreenPointFanWalkonSat-urday, 14 March from 16h00 onwards. For more information on Happy Feet and

Angie Motshekga, the Minister of Basic Education received the torch for peace from Dipuo Peters, the Minister of Transport, at Sthembele Matiso Secondary School, in Old Crossroads, lastThursday. PHOTO: MBONGISENI MASEKO

Wise-up, torch is up to lead the wayMBONGISENI MASEKO

The call to promote peace saw twoministerslighting a torch, as a national symbol for thecampaign to combat violence against wom-en and children at the Sithembele MatisoSecondary School, last Thursday.Dipuo Peters, the Minister of Transport

handed over the torch of peace toAngieMot-shekga, the Minister of Basic Education. The departments also announced the im-

portance of their partnership which is aim-ing at increasing road safety awareness, more especially, at primary schools aslearners there are seen as the most vulnera-ble of road users.Peters said the campaign for the safety of

road users continues for the whole year, in-cluding the Easter holidays and the festiveseason. She said between 30 to 40 persons lose

their lives on the roads in the country dailyand more become disabled after the acci-dents.Peters also theywere busypreparing to in-

troduce a programme whereby simulatorssimilar to the one used by pilots will be usedin schools for learners to learn driving skillswithout being on the road.“When you pass matric you must also

leave with a driver’s licence on the otherhand,” she said. She also discouraged parents from paying

for vans to transport their children to

schools and said vans cannot be seen to be“delivery vehicles for people”Peters also warned residents about the

danger of texting on the phone while walk-ing on the streets as it puts them on the riskof not seeing cars approaching. She also said alcohol has “erased many

lives” on the road.Motshekga also said it is important for ev-

eryone to promote safety on the road.“I lost a child in a car accident and I will

never heal from that.It is painful to lose a child. Be safe on the

road. You must work for peace and respectyourself,” she said.Motshekga also urgedGrade 12 learners to

stop everything now and focus on their stud-ies.“Make sure that youdonot passwithAma-

vukuvuku (wasteful) of 30 percent whichwill need you to explain for the rest of yourlife. You cannot lie about it.Weonly love youthis year, in 2016 you will be a failure of 2015and we do not want to see you here,” Mot-shekga said.Councillor Luvuyo Zondani, said the area

does need the awareness of road safety as somany lives were “lost” on the road in the ar-ea of which some of them were caused byAmaphela which “do not respect the rulesof the road.”Zondani also said the changing of concrete

streets surface which was constructed bythe Apartheid government to tar road was

in a good progress in the area.He also blamed the then government for

constructing the relatively small streetswhich put the lives of residents at risk.Vusumzi Nhlahla said the event was not

“misplaced” as it was taken into the area.“It is going a long way in sensitising and

broadening knowledge to the children.

The event is not misplaced here andlearners will spread the gospel. Childrenmust be able to understand the road safety.Thismust formpart of curriculum to changebehaviour of communities,” Nhlahla said. The torch was due to go to different areas

in the province before being handed over toanother province after eight days.

Restive Barcelona protestors bring traffic to a standstillMANDLA MAHASHE

Early morning traffic was brought to a halton the ever busy NY 108 road in Gugulethuon Monday. There were rocks and flames as unhappy

residents protested against the employmentprocess in a project to set to upgrade theroad.Traffic had to be diverted to other streets

of Gugulethu causing major delays and con-fusion among commuters and motorists.“We want to find out how the community

liaison officer was employed because werenever consulted as the community. It should have been advertised and then

a meeting called so that person could be se-lected with the approval of the community. This is not acceptable,” said protest leaderBasil Mntungane. He claimed that residents in area Six were

unhappy that so far the majority of the peo-ple employed in the projectwere fromBarce-lona.“We also don’t know when they were em-

ployed as we just saw people working.“We want the labour to be fully represent-

ative of thepeople fromtheward 40,”he said. The protestors accused the councillor

Mzwakhe Nqavashe of failing to listen totheir grievances. The tipping pointwas his failure to attend

a meeting regarding the matter on Sundayafternoon.

However, Nqavashe City Vision that hehad been called at the last minute for themeeting.“I was not invited to themeeting they held

on Sunday, yet heared of it late eveningthrough a stranger who called me to cometo the meetingi,” explained Nqavashe. He said he had never refused to listen to

the residents complaints. He also refuted

ly by the contractor interviewing all appliedand shortlisted candidates at sub council of-fices.The community cannot decide on the suit-

ability of CLO candidate, it’s the experienceand skills of such candidatewhich puts such

candidate in a better chance to get such spec-ified job opportunity,” e added. The group said that the will take the mat-

Then and Now: Our contributor takes us on the tragedies preceding the origins of our grog

Apartheid, Nat and ‘Smokkelhuise’,SPINDOG MOTSAMAI

Rowdy, raucous and rumbustious. SouthAf-rican shebeens and taverns are all this, andmuch, much more.

However, they are by no means the onlyplaces to go to have a drink and thus enjoya great time – over the years they haveplayed a vital role in South Africa’s strugglefor freedom and democracy.

During apartheid, shebeens were closelyassociated with the townships, where theyserved as meeting places for political activ-ists. Itwashere, during that dark time in ourhistory, where young opponents of apart-heid would meet and discuss their politicalideas and ambitions.

Today, of course, shebeens are betterknown as taverns, and they are far more apart and parcel of the fabric of townshipsacross the country – places to relax, meet upwith friends and socialise.

During apartheid, two events – the 1927 Li-quor Act, which barred Africans and Indi-ans from selling alcohol or entering licensedpremises, and the Great Depression – result-ed in township shebeens shooting up every-where.

The Depression saw large numbers ofpoor, landless rural people pouring into thecities, to find work. Many of these people, naturally, were women, and many of theseunemployedwomen turned to the skills theyhad acquired over many years in the ruralareas in order to make a living. One of theseskills was beer brewing.

These women were known as “shebeenqueens”, and they made and sold beer to mi-grant workers who could not afford to buythe western variety, or simply preferred tra-ditional African beer.

Slowly but surely, shebeens came to beplaces where mostly working class urbanmen could unwind, socialise, and escape thehardships of life for a few hours amongfriends. They were places where peoplecould come together, and find a sense of be-longing.

Understandably, among the favourite top-ics under discussion were sport (especiallysoccer) and, of course, politics.

The apartheid police knew this, and she-beens were often raided and the patrons andowners arrested.

Shebeens attracted characters and youngachievers in the world of music, journalism, the arts and other fields, as well as their fairshare of young political firebrands.

One such firebrand was the famous Drummagazine journalist, Ndazana Nathaniel(Nat) Nakasa.

A colleague of Nakasa’s at the time, well-known journalist Joe Thloloe, says whilemany journalists of the time were heavydrinkers, Nakasa would come to the Classicshebeen where he would drink his half nipof brandy, and leave. “Nat was a natty dress-er. He would always be neat, while wesmelled of booze and were unwashed,” saysThloloe.

Nakasa had a way with words and all whoread his work were impressed by his com-mand of the English language and his bitingcriticism of the system of apartheid.

In 1964, Nakasa applied for the prestigiousNieman Fellowship at Harvard Universityin the USA and was finally accepted. Thegovernment, however, refused to grant hima passport, andNakasa ended up leaving thecountry on an exit permit, which meant hecould never return. Lonely, and longing forhome, on 14 July 1965 Nakasa ended his life

by jumping from the window of a high-risebuilding. Attempts to bring his body homewere fruitless, andNakasawas buried at theFerncliff cemetery in upstate New York.

Onlya fewmonthsago, after aprocess last-ing many years, Nat Nakasa’s body was fi-

nally returned home, and he was buried ina moving ceremony near his home in theEastern Cape.

Today’s shebeens – or, rather taverns – aredifferent to those visited by Nakasa and oth-er young politicos and journalists of his day.

Today’s drinking holes are a lot different from those of the past. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Life is not worth dilly-dal-lying with the less-assuredIn life you have a choice to choose yourfriends and people your hang aroundwith. You must never settle for less or sell

yourself short. Choose the perfect crew.Be careful of choosing people who sit

around and gossip about other people.Be careful of choosing people who

never see anything possible for them, people who lack self-esteem such thatthey see all good things for others butnot for themselves. Do not choose peoplewho fill their minds with bad thoughtsand carry around on their bodies nega-tive energies. Move away from peoplewho keep blaming their past for all thewrongs happening in their lives. If youhave to, delete friends who update aboutall the negative things. Block individualswho complain but never offer solution toany challenges. Trusts me a bad vibespread faster and last longer so don’t letit catch you. Immunise yourself fromnegativity. People who often use wordssuch as “I can’t, it has never been done. Idon’t see it possible” leave them and

ensure they don’t visit. Be very busy tospare a minute with the people under-mine themselves.Allow next to you only those who see

endless possibilities, those who havewildest dreams and imaginations. Next toyou keep those who keep you on yourtoes. Choose to be with people who valuehealth as it is the road to wealth. Wise words for the futureThe academic year has just begun. Inyour first year at university, you shouldask yourself whether you are there forfun or to study. You must not disappoint yourself and

your parents.Be responsible and befriend your

books. Don’t bunk classes for fun. Forgetabout those who spend their time party-ing.Concentrate on your books.Choose friends who take their studies

seriously.Remember you can’t continue hanging

around people who don’t like to progressin life. You need to act responsibly if you want

to succeed. As a black young adult, you can stand

on your own if you focus on education. Itis the key to a better life and a brighterfuture.

Leaders must know reign isnot a permanent fixtureTrue leaders mentor others to carry onand develop their organisation to its fullpotential. Preparing to leave should bein the mind of every leader from day onein the office.Leaders who fail to do so, grow into

dictators who cling to power and position– simply because they have nowhere togo.As an example of this we need look no

further than north of Limpopo.Zimbabwe’s Robert Mugabe stands as

the embodiment of clinging to power. When he took over he forgot that he hadto leave at some point.Often we are tempted to listen to a

voice within that encourages us to stay alittle longer.

We end up staying for too long.Successful leaders are loved. They

inspire people and leave a legacy.Leaders who understand this will start

planning their exit from the moment theyare entrusted with power. They think about the kind of legacy

they will leave behind, then intentionallystrike out in that direction. They build an environment that will

thrive without them, ensuring continuitylong after they’re gone.It is the responsibility of citizens to

ensure that leaders pass the baton asearly as possible to avoid mediocrity andcomplacency

Wealth display not goodThe trend in black society of ‘showingoff’ expensive alcohol for those seeminglyaffluent or acting momentarily so, isquiete disturbing. The swagger displayed in the same

vein by these artificially wealthy blacksis also cause for concern. But when you ask the same people for

support towards community work, theyfrown upon you like the plague.

There are hundreds of strugglingcommunity organisations in our verycommunities, yet they do not care a whiffabout these.Crime in our communities is at an

alarming rate. This gives rise to the question of

whether this wealth is legit or illegit.Amavura and Amavato. Where from?

Mangcu’s book debuts in GugsLUMKILE MZUKWA

The Gugs Dialogues has once againplayed host to Professor XolelaMangcu, during the launch of hislatest literary offering: The Arro-gance of Power.

Not long ago, he had kept our in-tellectual senses on the curious sideof things with the un-put-downableBiko: A Biography.

Mangcu talked about his bookand afterwards took questions fromthe floor.

Community activist nand one ofthe Class of ‘76 Geof Mamputa mas-tered the ceremonies.

Mamputa indicated that Mnagcuhad his admires and detractors inthe complex landscape that is SouthAfrica.

“Some love him, some vilify him,but then the Prof harboured no holycows,” he shared.

As if that was not enough, Mangcuhimself admitted that the book went

through several titles changes be-fore before settling on ‘The Arro-gance Power’.

He indicated that the book wasabout the presidency of Thabo Mbe-ki and that of Jacob Zuma.

He was candid enough to say, ‘Iwas a fan of former president Mbe-ki’ and was held in awe by the prom-ise of a new dawn for Africa.

“I also ‘get excited’ about Zuma, and I’m effusive about how thingscould be and how they suddenlytumble,” he opined.

He said one of the startling thingsabout presidents past and present, ishow they are accountable to partypolitical structures or the politburofor most of the decisions they make, something which had little to dowith the needs of the general popu-lace .

He alluded to the “iron law of theoligarchy”. Mangcu also empha-sised that “people should strive togravitate towards the values en-

shrined in such concepts as self-reli-ance and self-pride, and that ‘thereis a need for cultural renaissance –and that it is up to us to raise the con-sciousness, and that we cannot de-pend on politics or politicians.’

His audience on the day did notdisappoint either.

the feedback and engagement washeartening and incisive. Many werecurious to know his views on thecurrent power struggles in the rul-ing nparty.

An invitation was to other writersto share their works in this platform– be it a book, or an essay, any writ-ing that will stimulate dialogue to-wards the community’s construct-ive discourse.

It was announced towards the ses-sion that another African literarygiant, Kenyan award winning au-thor Ngugi waThiong’o was headedto these shores and book lovers orthose who think they intellectuallydisposed should watch this space.

BOXING: Cape boxers pose a stiff challenge

Magwaca, Helebe could win bigSINETHEMBA MANDYOLI

The Premier Boxing League (PBL) sees TotoHelebe and Mzuvukile Magwaca up for theirdivisional prices in the finale taking placeat the Orient Theatre on Sunday February1..

The competition has a million rounds forthe all-round winner and two hundred thou-sand rand for winners of each of the four di-visions.

The winner of the million rand price andthe divisional winners will be decidedonthis day.

PBL founder Dicksy Nqula confirmed onWednesday that it is all systems go for themuch anticipated “Grand Finale” of thePBL.

The unfortunate part is that the publicbroadcaster will not show the tournament.

Cape Town had four boxers competing inall four divisions and they brought competi-tion to the PBL.

At the moment Mzuvukile Magwaca hasa single win and a single draw inhis divisionand currently has 22 points in the PBL lead-erboard followed by Mfundo Gwayana at 21points.

If he beats Mfundo Gwayana’s challengeand win he stands a very good chance top-ping the flyweight division.

Magwaca is younger than Gwayana butholds more accolades and ring craftsman-ship than him.

Another fight in the division will see a hotsubstitute Mzwabantu Dabaza fighting Mak-azole Tete.

Meanwhile bantamweight division’s TotoHelebe andThaboSishwanewill faceCeutusMbele and Innocent Matengu to decide whowins the bantamweight’s division.

Thabo Sishwane having won against TotoHelebe is set to face a little known but dan-gerous Innocent Matengu while Toto Helebefaces Cleutus Mbele. Mbele is yet to win inthe competition and is less likely to pose anychallenge to amuchhungrier anddangerousHelebe. In the bantamweight’s leaderboardHelebe has 23 points, Thabo Sishwane 19,Matengu 17, and Mbele only 13.

Other matches of the tournament will bea decider of the million rand price betweenHarare’s Vusumuzi Tyatyeka fighting thecurrent leader Xolisani Ndongeni of Mdant-sane. The featherweight Lwando Molwanafights Aphiwe Mboyiya. Toto Helebe will be vying for a top spot. Vusumzi Tyatyeka could cause an upset.

Mashaba upbeat despiteearly AFCON exitNational coach Shakes Mashaba insistedthat his side performed well at the AfricaCup of Nations despite going out in thegroup stage.

Bafana Bafana once again threw away alead on Tuesday as they lost 2-1 to Ghanain Mongomo to bow out bottom of Group Cwithout a win.

“We lost the match in the second half. Weplayed well in the first half but after thebreak we sat back,” said Mashaba.

“The two goals we conceded did not comefrom us defending badly, but because therewere too many players in our box and ourgoalkeeper could not see.

“We played well in qualifying againstsome very strong teams, and we played wellhere too,” added the coach, whose side lost3-1 to Algeria before drawing 1-1 with Sene-gal in their previous outings.

“Against Algeria the result did not reflectwhat happened in the match and it was thesame against Senegal, when we had lots ofchances.”

Defender Anele Ngcongca added: “It isdisappointing to crash out of the competi-tion like this. We scored first against Alge-

ria and against Senegal only to come backandconcedegoals, and itwas the samestoryagainst Ghana.

“We sat back too much in the second half, too deep and allowed them too much spaceto shoot at our goal

Oupa will a Downs playerOupa Manyisa’s agent has revealed that themidfielder will be a Mamelodi Sundownsplayer by the end of the week.

Manyisa’s agent, Thabo Moloto, revealedthat the deal is set for completion as theplayer is departing Euqatorial Guinea fol-lowing Bafana Bafana’s exit from AFCON.

“Oupa will be a Sundowns player by theend of the week,” Moloto told Soccer Ladu-ma.

The PSL rumour mill has been in a frenzysince “Ace” has been linked with a move toSundowns.

However, nothing could go ahead as theplayer has been on international duty.

The 26-year-old has been with Orlando Pi-rates since 2008 and has made over 200 ap-pearances for the Parktown club.

Meanwhile the Premier Soccer Leaguehas confirmed that the January domestictransfer window will close on Friday, Janu-ary 30 at 17:00.

PSL General Manager of Football, DerekBlanckensee, explained the rationale be-hind closing the domestic window on Fri-day instead of a later date as is the case insome parts of the world.

“We are bound by our rules which don’tallow registrations outside of office hours, nor are we allowed to go into February.”
