GANGSTA WARS: TERRITORIAL DISPUTES AT THE HEART OF THE PROBLEM
ASIFUNI GANGSASIFUNI GANGSMANDLA MAHASHE
YOUNG residents from ward 40 in Gugu-lethumarched to thepolice station to try andseek a solution the incessant and deadly ter-ritorial battles in the area.According to the protesters, three young
boys have been killed and others injuredsince the fights broke out midyear.Teenagers from Barcelona and Europe in-
formal settlements claim that they are at-tacked whenever they venture into areaslike Lusaka and vice versa.Ward 40 comprises of some parts of Gugu-
lethu, Barcelona, Europe, Section 3 and
Kanana.Theward’s ANCYL deputy chair Sindisile
Bhashe said that they were fed up with theunnecessary bloodshed.“We are calling for the police to intervene
so that the loss of innocent lives can beavoided. Young people are being ambushedon the way to school and brutally attacked,”he said.Bhashe said that the studentswere severe-
ly affected as their route to schools passesthrough the areas mentioned.“Children from these areasmust now take
taxis to avoid attacks. This is really hard forparents asmost of themare unemployed and
cannot afford this.Wearedeeply concerned for thematric pu-
pils who are not going to do well because ofthis violence,” he said. They handed over a list of grievances to
the police with the hope that the matter willbe given attention.“We need police to be visible in the affect-
ed areas and patrol during the morning andafternoonwhen learners travel to schools asthis are the timeswhen the attacks occur themost,” said ThobelaniMkhohli, ANCYL sec-retary.He insisted that cases need to be properly
investigated and feedback be given to vic-
tims.Gugulethu spokesperson Constable Zola
Ludziya said that theywelcomed theirmem-orandum and said the service was dedicatedto ensuring safety for all affected but that thecommunity also has a responsibility to as-sist the police in their duties by informingthem on trouble makers.Ludziya added: “It is very difficult to ap-
prehend criminals when there is insuffi-cient information. This leads to people beingreleased by the courts, so we need the com-munity to come forward and help us identifythe so-called trouble-makers,” he said. They will look into the grievances.

Time to embraceone another“Umntu omnyama uyamcaphukelaomnye umntu omnyama!”
Yes, you heard me correct. This was exactly what caught my
attention when I came across an oldman uttering these words. Shockedand embarrassed at first, I decided tojoin in and listen to the topic.
This was the topic that this old manwas engaging with some guys. I foundit interesting, so I decided to listen.
This is how the old man justifiedhis opening statement. He mutteredhow our black people would go tomuch lengths to ensure other blackpeople do not succeed.
They would go the extent of formu-lating traps and tricks to make sureyou fail.
It seemed as if we groom ourchildren to hate one another andnever cherish any good things thatothers achieve.
The parents are in on this, as theywill feed their children all the wrongand bad things to make sure they donot see any good coming from some-one else.
As he relayed all these statements itsuddenly dawned on me as to why weare not succeeding in life. It isbecause the support we need to giveeach other is not there any more.
All we want to see is for our fellowbrothers and sisters falling on theirbacks. And we will laugh at them.
What he was saying suddenly madeperfect sense, as I have experiencedand heard it a couple of times.
You will hear people saying: “Haz’ukuba uyakuphelelaphi, asiyoyakheuyibolikiwe, xa ebengubani yena, uzenza betere ngesikolwana sakhe, izakuphela lomalana yakhe nezinye.”
I am sure you are familiar with thepicture I have painted – and I have toinform you that it is the truth.
As I listened to the old man, Irealised that this is the fundamentalproblem that is holding us back fromprospering as black people.
We undermine each other. We would go to so much trouble to
make sure someone else does notsucceed.
We will make sure they do not getto where you are, if you happen tohave made it.
Writing this column took so muchfrom me, as I have been toying withthe concept for a long time.
I realised if I kept it to myself thenI would not be any different from thepeople I have described.
We are faced with a challenge inMzantsi. How do we embrace eachother so that we can all succeed inlife?
We face oblivion if we continue onthis path, especially in this newdispensation in our country.
The so-called liberation will be ofno value if we do not embrace eachother and support one another.
We will be a laughing stock toothers and we will end up withnothing.
I have seen remnants of thisshowing in our daily lives, where ourpolitical leaders are filling up theirpockets and neglecting the masses.
I have seen it in business, wherelocal businessmen are not supportedby the community.
It seems as if we derive our wellbe-ing by seeing a fellow brother crawl-ing.
We also derive our strength fromseeing someone else failing.
We never wish our fellow brethrenluck and prosperity.
We are very quick to judge eachother.
I believe we need to first embraceone another before we can enjoy anyof the perks that our democracy hasbrought us.
If we do not go that route then ourdemocracy will be useless or of novalue.
You may ask why we need toembracing each other... It is when wesupport, care for and work with eachother for our combined survival thatwe will prosper.
If we do not adhere to that, thenour democracy will just die the sameway the ubuntu concept has disap-peared right in front of our eyes.
In the spirit festive season, takethis advice and see how you can putit to practice before it is too late.
I believe we can all make it,together.
Race to honourAlex MadikaneOne of RCS Gug-ulethu AthleticClub’s top run-ners AlexMadikane hasdied after a briefillness.
Club chairper-son Thobile Nd-zube said mem-bers were sad-dened byMadikane’sdeath and that de-tails of the funer-als are not yet fi-nalised.
“We are all sadbecause he waslike a brother to all of us; we will all misshim,” he said.
He said club members have vowed to runthe upcoming Gugulethu ReconciliationDay 10km race in memory of Madikane.
“From an organising perspective, wewant to make sure that we pay respect tohim by staging a fantastic race,” Ndzube ex-plained.
This year the event will also feature a mu-sic festival after the prizegiving. Khuli Cha-na will be one of many artists performing.

Yengeni back in courtANC national executive committee memberTony Yengeni is still awaiting feedback onwhether his drunken driving charges will bewithdrawn, the Cape Town Magistrate’sCourt heard on Wednesday.

RIGHTING: Apartheid wrongs
Unlocking thedoor to successMBONGISENI MASEKO
Some business owners who have been trad-ing for decades described getting their titledeeds and certificates for ownership as a“relief”, at the Gugulethu Sports Complex,on Monday.
Patricia de Lille, the City of Cape TownExecutive Mayor, handed over 41 title deedsand 15 certificates of ownership to 56 busi-ness owners from Langa, Nyanga and Gug-ulethu on the day.
The business owners have been deniedownership of the promise from which theyoperate during apartheid dispensation andinstead they were forced to lease the proper-ties from iKapa Town Council.
Some of them have been in business forover 40 years.
De Lille said the day was “close to myheart” as it is a chance for the city to “rightsome of the wrongs of the past.”
“Our society went through a dark timewhen many of our residents were excludedfrom opportunities and were made to feelthat they could not contribute fully to socie-ty.
“In order to move forward, we need to ac-knowledge the injustices of our past. Own-ing property is one way in which people canfeel as if they belong and have a vested in-terest in societys,” she said.
De Lille also said the city took a decisionto alienate 148 properties in the Lagunyasection and sold them to the tenants at the
reduced rate and also subsidised the trans-fer fees of R3092 for each of the tenants.
Nonqaba Fesi, 72, from Langa, who is oneof the beneficiaries, said she could not evenremember the years she had been waitingfor receiving the ownership of her property.
“I got all the help I needed from the Cityof Cape Town when I applied for the owner-ship of the property.
“ I feel very good. My family is also veryhappy. The day had finally come,” Fesi said.
Her shop which is situated at Bunga Ave-nue is registered under her family trust.
Belford Ntlantsana, 79, the chairpersonfor Lagunya Business Association, was oneof the beneficiaries.
He has been running the Nomsa Tradingstore in NY6, since about 40 years.
“It was a worrying issue for me to run abusiness in a rented property, because I wasafraid that the owner would come anytimeand tell me to move out
“We persevered and we are owners today. It is a big relief.
“My children will take over the businesswhich is registered under family trust in fu-ture,” Ntlantsana said.
Among the beneficiaries were ProfessorNomvula Mtetwa and Patrick Nongalaza ofMaphindi’s Butchery and Takeaways.
Professor Nomvula Mtetwa said she wasvery pleased to be one of the recipients
De Lille had also handed over title deedsto 40 shop owners from Langa Nyanga andthe Gugulethu areas earlier in the year

March: Residents to take to the street
Let’s take back our nightsMANDLA MAHASHE
IFYOUare tired of rampant violence inyourcommunity the Take Back The Night marchneeds your support. That is the message from Ilitha Labantu
ahead of their evening march to take placeon Friday 28 November.According to the organisations Chief Op-
erational Officer Ella Mangisa the rally isset to highlight the prevalence of crime inGugulethu and surrounding areas during
the night.“Most of acts of violence take place during
the night and that has also been used as anexcuse. It has become a norm that at nighttime violent crime must take place in thetownships. We are saying that enough isenough andwe are claiming back the night,”said Mangisa. She said that they aim to change to percep-
tion that women and children must avoid towalk in the streets.“We should not surrender our streets and
turn a blind eye to crime and violence. Inmost cases the perpetrators are known inthe community but people fail to assist lawenforcement agencies and as a result the cul-prits continue to domore damage,” she said. The march will convene from two points
namely NY 3a near Shell Garage and Ny 1near the FAWU.Ilitha Labantu is a social service organisa-
tion that offers counselling to domestic vio-lence and rape victims. Ilitha Labantu alsooffers legal services and safe houses to vic-
tims. With 16 Days of Activism for No Violence
Against Women and Children beginningearlier this week Mangisa appealed to mento take part in such actions.“We cannot do this alone. We need men to
come onboard because they are also affectedby the violence. They should also come to the march to
show thatwehave aunited front against vio-lent crime and abuse,” she said. The march is expected to start at 18h00.

Gugs young artistgrabs a top awardCapeTown-based visu-al artist Ke-mang WaLehulerehas beennamed bythe Nation-al Arts Fes-tival as the2015 Stand-ard BankYoung Art-ist forVisu-al Art.
Growingup inGugu-lethu, 30-year-oldWa Le-hulere wassurround-ed by avery crea-tive familyas a child.
His mother was a singer andhis cousins were script writers, directors and actors in film andtheatre.
He has already won fiveawards including the first Inter-national Tiberius Art AwardDresden, launched in 2013 as atribute to outstanding contem-porary artists outside of Eu-rope. Wa Lehulere has hostedfour solo exhibitions, been in-volved in 50 group exhibitionsand six residencies.
Yet he remains humble. “Themost important thing for mehas been to read asmuch as pos-sible, interactingwith other art-ists, going to see shows, going tothe theatre and watching a lot ifindependent films,” Wa Le-hulere says.
“It is also important to keepworking and that doesn’t meanproducing physical things butresearching and writing aswell.”
Wa Lehulere was initially in-terested in Theatre, workingwith the Cape Town TheatreLaboratory. He enrolled in aperforming arts course at CAP(Community Arts Project), butdecided to change to a VisualArts course because he wanteda challenge. Here, he garneredexperience in drawing, paint-ing and sculpture.
From there his interestmoved to new media and film.
“Initially I became drawn toworkswhich dealt with identitypolitics, because I could relate.I looked a lot at Berni Searle,Tracey Rose, and Thando Ma-ma. That kind of work becamemy interest, instead of paint-ing.”
Co-founding the arts collec-tive theGugulective, and collab-orating with the Centre for His-torical Re-enactments and theNON-NON Collective, Wa Le-hulere’s focuses on initiatingconversations in the arts, par-ticularly bringing the arts intothe townships andmaking it ac-cessible to the masses.
Wa Lehulere’s visual art-works range across mediawhere he is particular about notconforming to one medium anddraws on a range of subjects bybeing open to the unknown.Theatre also influences hisworks by using props to changethe traditional meaning of spa-tial relations on stage or inagal-lery.
The longevity of his worksare influenced by the mediuminwhichhepresents them: fromusing charcoal and chalk to cre-ateworks, playing on the idea ofpreservation.
“I am excited that my workwill be traveling to differentvenues and cities around thecountry.” Says Wa Lehulere onreceiving the award.

Outsourcing for
small business - one
size does not fit all
An expression often heard in businesses, especially those
facing challenges, is that in order to regain financial health, the
enterprise will need to re-focus on its ‘core business’. Many
SME owners who find themselves having to cope with a dozen
different tasks a day, probably relate to this, grin ruefully and
wish that they could afford the luxury of only concentrating on
core business functions.
The irony, says Ravi Govender, Head of Small Enterprises at
Standard Bank, is that small business success is most often
linked to remaining focused on delivering the products and
services that are core to the business’ sustainability and growth.
The key to enabling the people with the skills to place their
energies where they are most useful in the company can be achieved by using a little imagination. The example set
by the finalists in the recent ‘Think Big - Building Business Champions’ TV series, illustrated that by outsourcing
tasks, the scarce skills of permanent staff can be used to maximum effect.
“It is unwise to think that outsourcing is a luxury that only bigger companies can afford. Outsourcing is practical.
All that is required is to work out the costs of the service. It can then be compared to the cost of your inputs, and
the potential loss of productivity that can occur if staff are concentrating on issues that are taking their attention
away from their primary areas of responsibility.”
“As with most things, outsourcing can only work if the necessary research and planning is undertaken to identify
exactly where support is needed, and to find the right supplier,” says Mr Govender.
Thinking about outsourcing should involve:
• Planning the on-boarding of suppliers in a way that does not require a significant time commitment from you.
• Clearly defining the areas that will and will not be outsourced. Strategic company functions should remain with
you and full-time, experienced staff. It is important to remember that you only want to outsource activities, and
not the management of relationships with your customers.
• Checking whether once-off projects can be outsourced to outside suppliers at a reasonable, all-inclusive price.
• Reducing the need for technology, as well as the time needed to administer the staff payroll. Traditionally,
payroll and HR services are the easiest to outsource to specialists.
• Deciding whether you need a full-time bookkeeper or administrator, or whether you can hand over these tasks
to someone who is well qualified, but works off-site.
• Keeping an eye on costs, and comparing them to the expense of using staff to accomplish tasks. The moment
outsourcing costs equal or exceed ‘in-house’ costs, it is time to reconsider.
• Clearly defining the scope of work, deadlines and deliverables on a project.
• Deciding the basis for payment. Will payment to suppliers rely on them completing defined milestones, or
meeting weekly or monthly deadlines?
• Putting everything in writing, so that there can be no disputes regarding charges, delivery or payment.
“Although you will be hiring somebody to accomplish a set task, or for a defined period of time, you should
take as much care interviewing them as you would when hiring a permanent employee. Check references and, if
necessary, visit sites where they have previously worked to inspect the standard of their work. Also take the time
to check whether they have the relevant experience in the areas you require help with.”
“Lastly, don’t be blinded by price. The best is not always the cheapest. You will benefit by making a careful
selection. Ignore quotes that are far below others, as this could indicate, lack of experience, or a supplier who may
not be adequately qualified.”
“Above all, remember that it is your business’ reputation at stake. Risking your reputation could have far-reaching
consequences. Choose an outsourced supplier carefully and monitor what they do and how they do it,” concludes
Mr Govender.

Streets turn into vibrant hubsArtists TheoNdindwa and SiphiweNgwenyahave ventured into socialtourism with a view of turning theparts of Gugulethu into a vibrant, productive creative hub showinglocal talent and art.The hub will be known as Gugu-
lethu Creative District -offering aunique experience and productsfor locals and tourists whilst meet-ing the primary objective of driv-ing visitors and business to the ar-ea.The duo merged their respective
existing artistic, entrepreneurialand training initiatives and theirrelated networks to capacitate andfacilitate this vision.“We identified a cultural and eco-
nomic disconnect between the cit-ies and the townships, the interna-tional creative economy. This in-spired us to collaborate acrossgenres, bridge between communi-ties and develop bespoke artist so-lutions,” said Theo.Under the umbrella of Arts
Township International (ATi) theyfocus on consolidating, sustainingand expanding the products oftownships and arts on a nationaland international level.“This will give projects of visual
and performance art, tourism, so-cial and environmental growthandempower residents communitieson an urban, rural, national andglobal platform,” said Siphiwe.ATi has held successful exhibi-
tions in townships like Kayamandiand Soweto but the Gugulethu ven-
ture is dubbed as a “first majorproject”.Patnering this event are theGug-
ulethu Community, ATi, iKapaDance Theatre,MabonengArts Ex-perience, Homes Innovation Labs, individual families and small busi-nesses.Additional projects operated by
ATi include TAG (Township ArtGallery) in Langa and Alexandra -a permanent township art galleryof ten homes in Langa that cater tolocal and international visitors.Nkanyezi Art Gallery - a ‘bridg-
ing’ arts gallery, situated at thehighly esteemedMount Nelson Ho-tel, for international tourists to vis-it community projects.iKapa Training & Outreach
School – based in five townshipsschools that use the arts and danceto change lives of the disadvan-taged youth. The Gugulethu Creative District
will openonSaturdayNovember 29at corner of NY147 and NY117.You can expect to see local town-
ship homes turned into galleries, innovation and performance spac-es with professional works of art/experiments being showcased.Tour guides will escort visitors
along a carefully mapped festivalroute, whilst local performancegroups showcase their latest artis-tic works. For more informationaboutATi and the Community Cre-ative District, visit www.artstown-ship.com or email [email protected]
Members of Arts Township International will be entertaning visitors who will descend to Gugulethu this weekend.PHOTOS: SUPPLIED

Beasts’ unbeatenrun continuesSTEVLIN MALGAS
Cape Town All Stars let yet another derbymatch slip through their fingers when theyplayed to a 1-1 stalemate with FC Cape Townat the Athlone Stadium on Friday evening.Coach Boebie Solomons was left haplessly
looking to the stars as his charges lackedcomposure in the final third to secure theirfirst home victory. The seventh Cape Derby of the season
started off at a blistering pace, with the FCCape Town outmuscling their hosts in theopening exchanges.Starswere shining the brightest in the 40th
minute when midfielder Zaphaniah Mboko-ma gave his side the lead against his formerteam. The hosts took a 1-0 lead into the break as
the African Beasts were left licking theirwounds.
Stars continued where they left off andstarted the second half the brightest. However, following two quick substitu-
tions for the African Beasts, it was SibusisoMasina who found the back of the net for thevisitors to level matters nine minutes intothe second half. The game soon opened up as both teams
searched for the winner and although Starshad more clear-cut chances, they failed capi-talise on them to regain the lead. Meanwhile, the visitors had their chances as well, butwere denied by the heroics of goalkeeperKyle Peters. With neither side able break the deadlock,

“These [children] are self-motivatedand they all want to succeed. I hope theirenthusiasm will encourage more young-ters to follow suit,” Conjana said.
The tournament was held on Saturday15 November.
The club will close its doors for the fes-tive season on Saturday 13 December andwill re-open for training and combat onMonday 12 January.
“We are extending our services in Gug-ulethu with taebo classes and senior ka-rate training next year,” Conjana said.

Bouts for coveted prizeThe curtain of the inaugural Premier Box-ing League (PBL) challenge is scheduled tocome down when Fight Night VI is stagedin East London on Saturday 24 January.
The event was initially set to take placethis year, but logistical difficulties prompt-ed organisers to re-schedule.
“This is in light of sponsors’ timelinesand Boxing South Africa deadlines whichdid not align,” PBL managing directorDicksy Ngqula said.
Seven bouts will be on the bill when GabsBoxing Promotions stages the final show-piece, which will determine which boxertakes home the coveted R1m prize.
International Boxing Organisation inter-national lightweight champion Xolisani“The Bomb” Ndongeni is the current logleader.
Ndongeni will need a win over fourth-placed Vusumzi “Dirty Boy” Tyatyeka toconfirm his status as the first boxer to takehome the sought-after prize.
Ndongeni’s closest competitor is formerSA junior featherweight championMacBute “Macman” Sinyabi.
However, Sinyabi would need a knockoutvictory over the experienced Oscar “Gold-en Boy” Chauke if he is to displace Ndon-geni.
The next highest placed of the four feath-erweight contenders is Aphiwe Mboyiya, who is ninth. Mboyiya meets Lwando Mol-wana.
Fifth-placed Toto Helebe is the leadingbantamweight contender and is expected toseal his dominance when he takes on CletusMbele (14th) who would be fighting forpride.
The other two bantamweights are ThaboSishwane (10th) and Innocent Mantengu(13th).
The clash between the two will also formpart of the final tournament.
As is the case in the bantamweight divi-sion, all four flyweights will be in action inthe last PBL tournament.
It will be a fierce battle between Mzu-vukile Magwaca (sixth) and Mfundo Gway-ana (eighth), while the other flyweight con-test will be between Makazole Tete andMzwabantu Dabaza.
