Take it easy as weflow into the festive

Today I am just going to take things easyas I have already changed into festiveseason mode.

You know festive season is a funnytime in that we get to look back at thingsthat transpired throughout the year. Asyou know life goes on and it is full ofchallenges and intricacies. Throughoutthe years we have seen things happeningduring this time. We reflect on thingsthat we had set out to achieve in the pastyear. We reminisce on the good and badthings that befell us. Sometimes we learna lesson from some episodes and fromsome we just make sure we never dothem again.Through the years growing I have seen

things change from the way we used tocelebrate this time. As a child like manyothers we were told that this is the timewe celebrate the birth of our Lord JesusChrist. We were told to go church and begood kids. We knew that this is the timewere we will be treated to some of thenice and scrumptious delicacies that youcould ever imagine.

This was the only time that yourparents bought you decent clothes. It wasa happy time and everyone seemed toforget all the problems they were facingin Mzantsi at that time. It seemed as ifApartheid did not exist even when we

had to go the congested beaches peopleseemed happy. If you will rememberblack people had to all fit into one or twobeaches that were Mnandi and Swartklipbeaches. You can imagine the difficulty people

experienced in trying to enjoy their swimas there was no space to move or swimfreely. This could be the reason whymost of us cannot swim it is because wecould not get the luxury of stretching ourbodies to their full extent. But whatpuzzled me was the fact that people usedto drown on these beaches maybe thatwas from the result of over indulging onknow what moss. All I am trying to say above people is

the following I feel it is rare these daysto find people enjoying themselves andhaving fun on simple things.

Our kids these days do not find fun indoing kids stuff. I cannot blame politicsfor this but something has changed in usand I think I can delve more on thatissue in my next article. Well people aswe move into the festive season I appealto anyone who has other ideas of spoilingit for someone else to please let it slip. Ifyou planned to take revenge on someonejust let it slide. If you planned to do goodfor someone I say go ahead and fulfilyour dreams.Life is simple if we make it to be so I

challenge everyone to go into this festiveseason with their hearts filled with peaceand happiness so that we celebrate ingood spirit. Enjoy.

TARZAN MBITA

It came as a shockwhen it did. For I couldnot imagine Ponko KaMasiba lying deadunder a heap of rubble in a foreign land, albeit in Africa. Not Peddies, Ponko, aka PM Live,

which moniker he pilfered from the titleof the show of the late Eddie Zondi of Ra-dio Metro fame.Ponkowas a bigman, both literally and

figuratively. So big hewas never fearless.Up to the time he calledmewhilst I was

writing for the Cape Argus as an intern,I had never heard of him, nor had heheard of me. But had seen an article I hadwritten for theCapeArgus butwas serial-ised for The Star newspaperI soon realised why I had never heard

of him as a writer; he had been a journoat Bona magazine, and no townshipboykie in his rightmind readBonamaga-zine then. Ndifuna iQabane! sies maan.Drum was the mag then.We laughed at this notion but settled on

the fact that Juju is a big Kasie, and attimes you could not tell skollies fromyour cats (friends). In 2001 I was appointed editor of this

newspaper, and our friendship was re-kindled, only if I could give him space toa write a weekly column. According tohim, things were no longer working outwell for him in Jozi, so what better waythan to back home and link up with an-other Mri, and by extension Trozoans(Gugs people).Being amanwho liked fresh deas, I im-

mediately agreed to let him pen the piec-es(s).After the publication of the first article,

it turns out this man is using my paperto settle old scores, either with familymembers, friends, and past girlfriends hefelt hard done by. The articles were soacidic that people started callingmy pub-lisher to inform him of this anomally, and that Iwas ignoring their calls for fair-ness.I was called into the pub’s office and

read the riot act, but me being me, I re-minded him of something called editorialindependence. he backed off. Further-more, I informed him the writer was notjust a columnist any more, but Editor atLarge (whatever that meant)We had a brilliant sub-editor then, the

late Jules Julian. Jules was so mesmer-ised by the gymnastics of Ponko’s familywoes that he stopped thinking of newheadings for these columns. Instead they

all became: Ponko Masiba: Telling it asit is or as it should be. These continueduntil he landed a cushy job at the SundaySun, a long calculated move. I remembertelling him that a lot of people in his pastand present sure will be sighing with re-lief at this. He laughed and said kodwabayivile yona imessage. It was later thatI told that in earnest, I was one of thosepeople. With all of the above being said I think

at the Sunday Sun he had his DamascusMoment, for he slanted towards religionand motivated for a column called Sun-day Worship.I was shocked and excited at the same

time when he told me that his familyname had a strong association with theChurch of God and Saints of Christ, akaAmasirayeli, which members fell to theguns of the occupiers in the BullhoekMassacre of 1922, under the leadership ofEnoch Mgijima. So that when he was retrenched at the

Sunday Sun in 2009, he immediatelylaunched the LetsPraise Magazine, achristianmagazine distributedmostly inthe East London area.In 2011 he sad: “Jungleman 2011 is 20

heaven forme,”. Themagazinewas a suc-cess, he rightfully boasted.I still cannot believe thatPonko left this

earth under a heap of rubble in a Nigeri-an. May his soul rest in piece. Ponko Ped-dies Masiba will be buried on Saturdayat the Centenary Hall in Hudson Park,Vincent in East London. Lala NgoxoloMartry of Faith, Mkhwane, Mwelase.

Tribute to the‘Big Fellow’

Ponko Peddies Masiba will be buried on Satur-day in East London.

Pipe changing causes a stirMBONGISENI MASEKO

The work of changing small sewage pipeswhich started a year ago has left residentsimpatient as they claim it inconveniencesthem in Luyoloville.Monde Gwentshe, 63, a resident at Homba

Street, said the construction started in No-vember, last year, and there are no signs toshow the end of it.Gwentshe said their area has since been

terrorised with a terrible smell and that wa-ter supply gets disrupted frequently as re-sults of water pipes being damaged duringthe construction.“They have been working here every day

since November last year and it does notshow that they will end anytime soon. We

have to live with a terrible smell every day.We are tired of the smell now. It is a healthhazard to us. They also interfere with watersupply leaving us without water for thewhole day,” Gwentshe said.Langa Makalima, 74, who also resides on

the street, said the drain in front of his houseblocked for the first time after the construc-tion started.Makalima moved in the area in 1990.“The construction is disrupting us a lot.

I saw this drain blocking for the first timeafter they started working here. We havebeen waiting for a long time for them to fin-ish.”Nobantu Mbusi, the Community Liaison

For 13-year-old Zomsi Mdzoyi beinggiven the opportunity to attend one ofthe most elite schools in the country

is a dream come true. The Grade 7 pupil at Micklefield Prima-

ry School in Rondebosch was recentlyawarded a full scholarship to attend theOprah Winfrey Leadership Academy forGirls in Johannesburg.“I am extremely excited and nervous for

this new chapter in my life, but I am grate-ful for the opportunity,” she says.Mdzoyi lives in Samora Machel with a

single mom, Zolelwa.“Getting up at 05:30 every weekday to

travel to school has all been worth it. Myeducation comes first. It is something Ihave learned from my mother,” she says.Zomsi’s circumstances at home did not

deter her from pursuing her dreams to bethe first in her family to receive a scholar-ship. “Mymother has sacrificed a lot in herlife, she gave up so much not only for mebut to support her family,” she says.Hermother isher greatestmotivator and

role model.“My mother never had the opportunity

to study further after she matriculated. She had siblings to support, but does notregret her decision in doing so. She becamea stronger and independent woman be-cause of that,” Zomsi says. Her Grade 7 teacher, Beverleigh Lee,

says says Zomsi is a talented girl with apositive work ethic. “She is a pleasure toteach and is always courteous and friendlytowards her friends and classmates,” shesays.Lee says Zomsi deserves this wonderful

opportunity, adding she excels in Xhosa, and also does well in mathematics, dramaand natural science.“It is rewarding to see that Zomsi has

made the most of her opportunities thathave been offered to her at school. I haveno doubt that she will be an asset to herfuture school and a wonderful ambassadorfor South Africa,” she says.Zomsi had to go through four interviews

after making her application to attend theacademy.“It was nerve-wrecking because it is an

opportunity of a life time, but I was myselfand gave it my all. When my mother andI got the news that I had been accepted wewere overjoyed,” she says.Zomsi was also offered a full scholarship

to attend Bridge House School in Fransch-oek.She, however, accepted the scholarship

at the academy as there are girls with simi-lar backgrounds to hers to whom she canrelate.Lee says Micklefield is a nurturing

school and staff believe in developing each

girl’s potential. “We are all very proud ofher achievements,” she says. After matriculating Zomsi plans to be-

The flipside of treatingforeigners with disrespectYoung people in our townships make adeal with successful foreign shopkeepersthat they will guard them against robbers. The young people claim they know local

people better and can point out possibletroublemakers. They do that in exchange for a few

beers or demand a protection fee, whichwill be also used for drinking. When the deal goes wrong, the very

same youngsters organise hooligans toattack and loot the shops, claiming theydon’t want any foreigners here. The looters grab expensive items

without paying. They don’t care aboutdestroying the image of our country. Apicture is painted to the outside worldthat all South Africans are xenophobic.

Instead of learning a thing or two fromthese prosperous traders, our youngpeople drug and drink themselves todeath. There will come a time when these

people return to their countries. We hearevery day that some country has discov-ered oil, coal or diamonds. Countries likeGhana and Mozambique are becomingrich. And it will soon be our turn to goand seek greener pastures on the otherside. We’ll be crying for time wastedinstead of learning how they successfullyconducted their businesses. We will expectthem to treat us as human beings, whilewe failed to respect them here.

Call to regulate taxi industryThe taxi industry has been neglected fortoo long. One would think governmentwould have met some of the taxi ownersand drivers grievances by now. Most of these grievances are genuine.

Each time there’s a taxi strike the samecomplaints arise. That means no one islistening to the taxi operators. Why can’t the government subsidise

taxis as it does with buses and trains?Lanes allocated to the BRTs should

have been given to the taxis as well – nowonder they’ve declared the yellow lanetheir property.Government is concerned about the

high unemployment rate, but they fail tosubsidise the taxi industry, which has the

potential to create jobs.If government is afraid of taxi people,

who can touch them? It’s the same oldstory of our country – having a goodconstitution but lacking manpower andresources to implement it.Ignoring those in the taxi industry has

created the notion that there are separaterules for ranks and other citizens. Now that it is summer, women in

miniskirts will be embarrassed at taxiranks. Taxi drivers, please stop harassingour sisters because they have a rightdress that way. Your behaviour is wrongand unacceptable.

Hard work brings successIt is a fact of life that you cannotachieve what you have not defined. Thisprinciple also applies to success. Most people who want to be successful

are not necessarily unable to be success-ful. The problem with them is that theymisunderstand the word “success”.One of the most common mistakes is

thinking that success is as a result ofgenius or magic. You need to have the right picture of

it, as well as the right principles to

attain it. You never arrive at success.Everyone has their own specific vocationor mission in life. They must carry out aconcrete assignment that demandsfulfilment. Our fingerprints can’t be duplicated.

Success comes as a result of us growinginto our full potential. We can do anything, but we cannot do

everything.THANDOKAZI MABE

Take a stand, be the changeIf you cannot beat them, join them. This is a famous saying which encour-

ages us to maintain the status quo evenwhen we see the need for change.I look at this saying as a challenge for

us to stand our ground, believe that wewere made for something great and stickto our principles. We need to set the tone and stop

giving in, going with the flow andaccepting things as custom.Leaders in South Africa need to

review their actions and we as followersneed to be determined and refuse to bepart of mediocrity. We should take a stand and accept the

responsibility that comes with humanrights.Keeping quiet can only mean we

comply with the wrong behaviour wesee. There is so much evil around us –

corruption in government, people

turning to crime, and pupils and teach-ers doing despicable things instead oflearning and teaching. We find ourselves measuring the

damage and not the difference. The cup of endurance runs over. We

should come to a point where we say wecannot be part of corruption – be it inthe workplace or at home.I mean, which university will accept

you with a 30% pass? Be the first tohave your likeness depicted.People like Nelson Mandela and

American rights activist Rosa Parks tooka stand and made the change theywanted to see. They were relevant andaccountable. We are all leaders in our own unique

way. Make your mark where you are, whether you’re a cleaner or a CEO oranything in-between.

Help your communityThere are no role models in our commu-nities. We have to rely on TV for this. Our children need a strong supportive

system, not only from their families butfrom everyone who is able to provide it.People must not study to hang their

certificates on walls.

They must go to school to help thenation prosper and make South Africa abetter place.Success of one person should be the

success of their community.SIFISO NQULO

Get clued up on diabetesI would like use this opportunity orplatform to encourage all South Africans, especially the youth in our townships togo to any government clinic or hospitaland get tested for diabetes.Friday 14 November was World Diabe-

tes Awareness Day. In South Africa, themonth of November has been dedicated tocreate awareness among citizens of thedangers of diabetes, as well as informingthem of how it can be controlled.Last month I was diagnosed with

diabetes. As a result of a lack of informa-tion about the disease, I ignored itssymptoms for a very long time. When I was tested, I was informed I

was a chronic sufferer, as it had pro-gressed too far.For this reason I want to encourage

everyone to test now than later. Here are

some of the most common symptoms ofdiabetes. I suggest you have yourselftested if you often experience any of thesesymptoms: more than regular urinating;often feeling very thirsty; often feelingvery hungry even though you have eaten;extreme fatigue; blurred vision; cuts orbruises which heal at a slow pace; rapidweight loss even though your eatingpatterns are normal; or a tingling, pain,or numbness in your hands or feet.If you are diagnosed with diabetes, do

not be afraid. This disease is controllableand manageable. Tablets may be pre-scribed to help improve control.More importantly, regular exercise and

a strict diet will help in keeping it undercontrol.

Marikana: Life goes on

Squatters make ends meetMANDLA MAHASHE

With the dust from unsuccessfulevictions long settled squattersfrom the infamousMarikana infor-mal settlement are going on withtheir lives while small businesseshave sprouted all over.Since the hostile takeover of the

land, which includes the pushingout of initiates, small business op-erators have flocked to the areaand established their meat stands, barbershops, spaza shops and evenshack-selling businesses. After a full three months since

the invasion the gold rush has allbut slowed down but business isstill good.“When they first arrived here

my business was going pretty wellbecause they would come here forlunch while they built theirshacks,” says Nokhaya Sokoti. This was helped by the fact that

invaders had to rebuild repeatedlyafter law enforcement agencies de-stroyed the structures continuous-ly.“Now everyone is settled they

can cook in their houses they don’tbuy as much meat as they did butI still make a profit. There is a lot of activity here and

there is no shortage of customers,”said the mother of two.She tells City Vision that she

makes just enough money to putfood on the table at her home butthat’s as far as it goes.“Because I have no electricity

here I can only buy stock worthR180 which last about a day. Thatmakes me a 100 % profit. It soundslike a lot but sometimes it gets real-ly tough. But the best thing aboutworking

here is that I don’t have to pay rentto place my stall,” she explains. She said that where she previ-

ously erected her stand she wasasked to pay around R300 permonth.“The business was not going as

well as it does here so it was reallyhard.Tenants didn’t care they wanted

their money when the month endsso I’m happy here,” she said.Another individual that was

chased toMarikana by tenant trou-bles is Charmaine Mkoni, 45, fromLower Crossroads. She says that she was forced out

by tenant’s demands that shecouldn’t meet.“When you live in someone’s

backyard they just want the rent.It does notmatter whether you lostyour job you just have to pay.

I couldn’tmanage it anymore be-cause I was unemployed with twochildren,” she explained. She said that when she found

that people were moving into theland she felt that it was the only so-lution for her.“Yes, there are not services like

water, electricity and ablutionservices but it is better because

there is less stress,” she said.Residents at Marikana claim to

defecated in plastic bag and throwthem at refused bags.Leaders say that it is still the best

alternative for them.“It is close to transport systems

like buses and trains. As you know the best form of

transport for the poor is the trainso having it close by helps a lot,”said Thembekile Maqhubeka.

Choir brims with confidenceMANDLA MAHASHE

A Gugulethu choir that is set to representthe province at a national contest nextmonth is quietly confident despite the odds.Joyful Harmonies Choir is a four-year-old

choir that hasmade waves in the choral mu-sic circles ever since it was founded foursago. They are currently the highest rated in

The Old Mutual National Choir Festival’sstandard category but this is the last thingon theirmind, according to founder and con-ductor Monde Mdingi.Mdingi says their biggest concern is get-

ting funds for their trip to Durban’s Interna-tional Convention Centre where the compe-tition will be staged from 6 to 7 December.“We want to get there early so that we can

have enough time to rest and rehearse in or-der to make the best impression in the com-petition.Last time, we went to the national compe-

tition we didn’t get enough rest and wedidn’t do as well as we would like,” he ex-plained.The group was placed 4th out of 10 choirs

on their debut appearance in the competi-tion in 2012. “We have 60 members so trans-port and accommodation is always a prob-lem when we have to make appearances. The sponsor of the competition has

availed transport and accommodation butwe would like to get there early because we

are the furthest.Getting there a day before the event will

be to our detriment,” said Mdingi. He re-mains confident about the choir’s chancesdespite the expectation.“Now that we are rated at the top of the

group everyone is expectingus to dowell but

we justwant to give the audience a great per-formance.A win would be nice but it would be a bo-

nus,” said Mdingi. The choir was initially made up of Fezeka

High School matriculants and alumnae butlater attracted youngsters from as far as

Khayelitsha. “Even though choral music isnot themost attractive for youngsters butwehave abundant talent. The biggest challenge is that the young-

sters lose interest and theyventureoff differ-ent genres that appeal to the youth,” saidMdingi.

Zola dreams of seeing her name in lightsMTHAKAZI MAKALIMA

The sky is the limit for 21-year-old ZolakaziNgwenze.

After competing in Shoprite’s TopStarsinging competition, the singer known asZola’s music career seems to be blossoming.

The competition sees talented Shopriteand Checkers workers from across the conti-nent compete for the coveted prize of beingcrown the best singer.

A group of the participants have now re-corded the Allstars CD. And Zola’s vocal tal-ent features on one of the tracks.

She was one of many artists from ShopriteKhayelitsha to perform at a glitsy provincialevent and was later selected to perform onthe national stage.

Zola, however, did not win the ultimateprize; she lost to Jo-Ann Daniels who hasbeen named the ambassador of the Shoprite

TopStar competition. But this pop diva is determined to realise

her dreams and said she will not give up onher road to achieving her goals.

She, together with Daniels and anothercontestant Abigail Andrews have been giv-en the opportunity to form a girl band, JAZ.The name of the group is devised from thefirst letters of their names. And they plan torelease the debut album next year.

But first, they are promoting the AllstarCD, which she describes as a great experi-ence. “I’ve learnt so much; touring acrossthe country is grooming me for biggerthings,” Zola said.

When things get to tough for her, she re-members the words of her mentor, MynieGrove: “If it’s meant to be; it is up to me.”

Zola was born and raised in Khayelitshaand attended high in Zusukhaya HighSchool. “I’ve always loved singing and knew

I was a good singer, but I never had confi-dence to let it out until I was asked to singin a school choir,” she says.

And she hasn’t looked back since. She was encouraged to enter the competi-

tion by her supervisor and manager, Mr Vand Zanele Ngxoya.

Thus far, Zola said, the road hasn’t beeneasy, but in the back of her mind she alwaysremembered that she was doing somethingthat she loves. “I want to sing and be one ofthe biggest stars in SA; then spread my mu-sic all over the world,” she says.

In the meantime, she will continue to flyher and Khayelitsha’s flag high. “This is justthe beginning of great things to come; myjourney has just began,” Zola said.

“My achievements show everything ispossible if you believe in yourself and trustin God. The Allstar made those dreams pos-sible for me.”

Gugulethu’s finest DJ ison course to release hislong-awaited debut sin-gle and all indicationssuggest that he has a win-ner on his hands.

Thando Mapipa, betterknown as Kaunda Muzi-cal, will soon release thesingle Thinking of You,featuring Yolanda.

Having spent morethan a decade in the mu-sic industry, he believesnow is the right time forhim to showcase his pro-duction skills.

“The song will be re-leased via social mediaon Sunday 30 Novemberand the first 50 people todownload it, will get itfor free on my websiteand Kaunda DJ Muzicalfan page,” he said.

Kaunda started playing mu-sic from a tender age of 13 in2000. He performed around Gug-ulethu and graduated as one ofthe most-sought after DJs in theCity’s nightlife.

While many thought he wasat the pinnacle of his careerwhen he was made a mix DJ onGoodHope FM and when he wasappointed a brand ambassadorof McDonalds DJ contest,Kaunda believes this is only thebeginning of his already flour-ishing career. “We serve a pur-

pose to help and positively in-fluence others, as well as show-ing that there is a lot to be proudof in our society,” he says.

“I still believe those who areinfluenced by drugs and alcoholwill find help if they look for it.”

Kaunda will showcase hissingle at performances aroundthe city. Also like his Facebookpage Kaunda DJ Muzical; fol-low him on Twitter @Kaunda-Muzical; follow him on Insta-gram at KaundaMuzical or visitwww.kaundamuzical.co.za.
