That was the attitude from the membersof the Lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgenderand intersex community and supporterswhen they marched the streets of Khayelit-sha.The march last Saturday, was part of the

Khumbulani Pride, which is an annualevent hosted by the LGBTI community toremember thosewho have died due to homo-phobic violence.A special tributewas paid to victims of the

deadly xenophobic violence that grippedparts of the country earlier this year.“We are compelled to commemorate the

lives of the people that were lost as a resultof hate in our communities. This is the thirdedition of the Khumbulani Pride Festival,the first having been held in Nyanga in 2013,the second in 2014 in Samora,” said organis-er Ntombi Mbuce.The theme for the day’s eventwas ‘Uniting

against Homophobia, Transphobia and Xen-ophobia”Mbuce said it was important that the com-

munity realised there were people who aredifferent and they deserve to be respectedand accepted.She said that even though things were get-

ting better for LGBTs in the townships,there still remains some challenges.“We still get provoked and verbally

abused and sometimes physical abuse stilltakes place in our townships and we have tofight really hard to change the mindset.Until the provocations stop all togetherwe

will continue to hold such events,” she said.Siya Mcuta, a lesbian from Site C Khaye-

litsha, who works for LGTBI rights groupFree Gender, says that there is still a hugeproblem of discrimination in the communi-ty.‘Despite South Africa recognizing LGBTI

people and being against discrimination ofLGBTI people, some people within commu-nities have not reached that understanding

and respect for peoplewhatever their sexualidentity. This disrespect for LGBTI identifi-cation is especially adopted by aggressiveheterosexual men who believe that hetero-sexual people are ‘normal’ and anyone elseis ‘abnormal’ or ‘not normal’ and should beremoved from society,’ she said.“The good things are that the relationship

we have with local police has been improv-

ing every year. They have really come onboard and we are glad that the workshopsthat we have conducted since 2010 haveworked,” she said.He said that there was still a lot of room

for improvement for the men in blue.“At times we have to push them to see re-

sults on cases of attacks to members but allin all things are getting better,” she said.

Reverend Beulah Durrheim from theGood Hope Metropolitan CommunityChurch said that the community needed tochange their perspective on the LGTBIs.“Christianity is about acceptance and that

is what we practice at our church.We really shouldn’t be using the bible to

discriminate against other people,” she toldCity Vision.

What makes you tick?Some people may argue that their being elevatedto the position of greatness is by accident andnothing more. I beg to disagree with that. It isbeing driven by desire. Desire is something thatwe do not pay attention to.

You know when I ask you, “What makes youtick?” you do not say desire.

You mention something else. Be it my father ormother. But it is not desire. Why is that? This iswhat we want to know.

To investigate I will look at my own experi-ence. I don’t know about you but in my upbring-ing I associated the word desire with sex. So itdid not make sense to associate it with personaldevelopment.

When people like Napoleon Hill said to make ityou have to have “a burning desire,” it did notregister with me. “Why desire,” I asked.

Indeed why. You see desire has a connotationthat no other word like it has.

You may say, “I want you” and smile and theperson that you say that to may smile too. Nice.But say, “I desire you” and watch what happens.The game changes. Something else is meant.

I leave it to you to figure out. But to me it islike sexual desire.

And that’s powerful because sex is energy. Andassociate desire with what you want in life.Associate it. I desire to be great!

Of course you do not say that. It does notsound like good English.

But say it all the same. And you will discover anew continent. It is like inventing a wheelinstead of relying on muscle power.

As you know in the past people used musclepower for long distance traveling until a wheelwas invented. That made things easier. In thisinstance your desire is your wheel, and yourwant your muscle power.

That is I of course. This is how I interpret it. Iwant to understand desire. I don’t think peoplelike Napoleon Hill used it by mistake.

They knew why they used it. It was left to usto interpret it.

You need to be brave to interpret it that way.You need to understand that the word desire hasmore feeling than want. As someone said desireis a springboard to something great.

It jumps higher than want. It reaches to thesky. And if you desire something you may touchit. Not only touch it, grab it. And it becomesyours. And mind you, desire here is used in apositive way.

It is not used in a negative way. Some peoplemay like to point out the negative. I am not intothat league. I use it to help myself and those thatneed to know. We have to know these things tomake a difference in our lives. Stay positive.

“We hope that under your leadership thisrelationship will continue unabated,” saidthe queen.

King Sigcawu said he would embark on anumber of programmes, among them moralregeneration, education and agriculture, toestablish a healthy nation characterised bymoral values.

He said he would work hard towardschanging a “dependency mentality” to oneof fostering development.

“Yes, the nation I am leading is poor. It de-pends on social grants, but people must es-tablish a cooperative, and move away fromlaziness,” he said.

“We have to develop an educated nationfree of drugs and alcohol.

Our youth need to focus on education andboth the government and traditional leadersneed to invest more in education,” he said.

The king stressed he was the “king of allamaXhosa, not only amaGcaleka. I am the

king of all ama- Xhosa irrespective of whereyou are.

My land begins in Umzimkhulu and goesup to Cape Town. It is all Xhosaland,” saidthe king

“Weappreciate the role of traditional lead-ers in promoting national unity.

We will work with his majesty in imple-menting the (government’s) back-to-basicsprogramme to accelerate service delivery.”

Zuma said the coronation was one of thehistoric occasions to happen “since thedawn of democracy.

The democratic government undertook along and difficult but necessary road of cor-recting the wrongs of the past through theNhlapo Ccommission on traditional leader-ship.

“We further confirm the findings of thecommission today.

I am happy that traditional leaders haveindeed spoken in a unified voice about whatwe are today,” Zuma said.

Zuma said the coronation was also a cele-bration of the Constitution.

“The coronation marks the end of a pain-ful era of colonial subjugation and oppres-sion and ushers in a new beginning ofstrengthening who we are as Africans andhow our society is structured or organised.

“We will thus work with Kumkani (the

king) to promote heritage and customs thatdefine the values of African people in thecontext of democracy,” said Zuma

“It is my greatest honour and privilege tocongratulate you, Kumkani, on this day ofyour coronation.”

Zuma handed a certificate of recognitionand a gift to Sigcawu.

“We say look after your people well.

“You defenders of the nation of brave Xho-sa warriors!

We congratulate you Kumkani and thewhole nation on this important day in thehistory of the Xhosa people,” said Zuma.

He looked forward to working with theking to build a better life for the people andsaid this day would remain in the historybooks of South Africa.

Police have appealed to the community toassist in tracing a group of suspects whoare terrorising businesses in Khayelitsha.Harare station commander Colonel TJ

Raboliba said about eight suspects robbedthe Price Chain Supermarket in TownTwoa week ago, leaving with an undisclosedsum of money.“The suspects, all armed, held the cash-

iers at gunpoint and demanded cash beforefleeingwith cash and cigarettes,” said Rab-oliba.He said in 2014 the suspects, who the po-

lice believe are operating as a group, oncerobbed Pep Stores approximately fourtimes in a period of two months.They also robbed a Hungry Lion outlet

during July and August 2014.The photos that are retrieved from the

stores’ surveillance cameras have shownthat the same suspects are operating inthese business robberies.

April 8 when she bought herblind brother an accordion andalso decided to “surprise himwith a CD recording.”He also sings with two other

blind people and they haveformed a group.“I then approached Nkomfa and

we decided hewould find a studioin Umtata and record a CD for theblind singers,” she said. Theblind singers then travelled toUmtata where they say theywere“rushed” into the studio withoutany rehearsal or rest after the

Long term gaol for rapistsSPINDOG MOTSAMAI

Swift detective work from Harare SAPShas resulted in the conviction of twomenwho robbed a couple and raped one of thevictims five months ago.

In the earlyhours of Wednesday 28 Jan-uary this year, Olwethu Nonyenga (21)and Sithembile Mvunyiswa (27) broke intwo Mandela Park homes.

“The front door was forced open andtwo males entered. One of the suspectspointed the victims with a firearm whilethe other was ransacking the house.Goods to the value of R10000.00 were tak-en. Before the suspects left the scene theymade turns to rape the wife in the pres-ence of her husband while he was kept at

gunpoint,” said Harare SAPS spokesper-son Lieutenant Siyabulela Vukubi.

Vukubi said that investigations by De-tective SergeantBradleyDavids led to thearrest of Nonyenga.

“He was positively linked to the crimescene by means of fingerprints as well asDNA. He further pointed out his co- ac-cused Sithembile Mvunyiswa. Bail wassuccessfully opposed and both accusedwere remanded in custody,” saidVukubi.

On Tuesday 12 May both the accusedwere sentenced in the Special Court atKhayelitshaMagistrateCourt. Theywereeach sentenced to 5 years imprisonmentfor Housebreaking, 10 years imprison-ment for aggravated robbery and 20 yearsimprisonment for Rape.

Referring to the book of John 4:5-42 aboutJesus and thewomanof Samaria in thewell,he said: “Jesus did not only reveal who sheis, or heal her, but after He was done withher, she became a disciple of Christ.”

The bishop also added that “It is our re-sponsibility to go out there and tell the peo-ple about importance of social justice.

He urged us to witness against those whoharm others on the grounds of their nation-ality.”

Young Women Manyano District Presi-dent Mama Maseti said: “My beloved sis-ters, how grateful am I to bewith you in thisconvention.”

The presidential theme for the conven-

tion was “God intervenes in our lives.”Mama Maseti added: “We come to this

convention with bruises and blood-lettingthat sometimes takes years to heal and al-ways leaves a mark; some of us have theadded challenges of being single parents ororphans, but in spite of that, God inter-vened.”

“In the situation of Daniel and his com-panions in a cave with lions, we can learnsome important lessons, that God’s inter-ventions do not always meet our expecta-tions. Through a series of trials and theirfaith, they remained loyal to the true God,”Mama Maseti said.

She also shared: “In life there are disap-pointments, dangers and detours, but Godhas promised to see us through at all times.There are times of indecision and timeswhen we wonder if God is with us, but Heis telling us that behind the scenes, theHolySpirit is making intercessions for us.”

She stressed that “As believers we needto point out to the world that God will soonintervene in our country and change every-thing”.

The newly-elected leadership of the AfricanNational Congress Western Cape VeteransLeaguehas hit the ground running to ensurethe challenges facing the organisation areaddressed.The elections took place in at the Langa

Sports Complex on Thursday after the pro-vincial conference, following the collapse ofa previous conference held a week earlier inGugulethu due to glitches, according to theorganisors.Some of thememberswere re-elected to be

part of the new leadership.This one was also delayed as members

were divided on the processes to be followedregarding the election of new leadership.Some favoured the ballot paper, while oth-

ers said a show of hands will do.Military veteran Zola Nqose, was re-elect-

ed chairperson, Humphrey Ntuli, his depu-ty, Nomsa Ntlabathi, secretary, VentureMatilda, deputy secretary and Capri Musa,treasurer.Most members were left disappointed aft-

er it came to light that the organisation wasoperating on a zero budget basis.It was announced that the leadership was

required to dig deep in their pockets for or-ganisational matters.Nqose, said the challenges that the organi-

sationwas facing since its inception, over 10

years ago, are still continuing unresolved.“We operate on a zero financial support.

The challenges that we were facing yearsago are still persisting. We still do not havea budget,” Nqose said.Nqose said they got a lot of promises from

Luthuli House, but nothing has come of it.He said bringingunity in theANCwas one

of their priorities and that hewas concernedthat their advice previously seemed to havefallen on deaf ears.He said the Economic Freedom Fighters

(EFF) would not exist today, had the ANClistened to their concerns and advice to han-dle thedisciplinaryprocess involvingJuliusMalema, differently.Malela is a former ANC Youth League

president and is now the Commander-in-Chief of the Economic Freedom Fighterswho was axed for misconduct in April 2012.“If the ANC had followed our advice, we

wouldnot have theEFF today.We raised ourconcerns about Julius,” he added.Caroline Dunga, The former secretary,

said they felt “exploited” as veterans, be-cause they always operate under impossibleconditions.“We do not have transport and we do not

have offices. We operate without help. Trav-elling is not easy. Our members who foughtfor freedom stay in the shacks with no prop-er sanitation. We deserve better. We feel ex-ploited,” Dunga said.

One unidentifiedmember said he felt “dis-turbed” to learn that the organisation wasoperating under no budget.LizoKapa, fromWorcester, saidhis region

was unaware about what was on the agendaof the day as theymade their way to the con-ference.“We were in the dark about what was go-

ing to happen here. We did not even knowthat we were here to elect new leadership,”Kapa said.According to the constitution of the orga-

nisation, it was announced, a member has

tobe 60years andoverandmusthaveat least40 years of unbroken service in the ANC toqualify to be part of the leadership team.Humphrey Ntuli, the deputy chairperson

of the veterans, said they will hit the groundrunning.“Our main priority is to raise funds. We

also want to visit our members from Bolandas they are complaining that they do not getmuch attention of the leadership. I feel veryhappy that members trusted me with takingtheir mandate forward,” Ntuli said.

Itsitsa’s primary school teachers andlearners are raring to take on another chal-lenge now that theyhave been crowned cho-ral music champions.Last Saturday, theMfuleni School scooped

threemedals in theNorthernDistrict SchoolChoral Music Competition held at Elsie’sRiver High School.They took first place in theEnglish catego-

ry and second spot in both themixeddoublesquartet and traditional song categories.“Itwas a tough competition aswewere pit-

ted against eleven other primary schools butwe were well prepared.We worked really hard improve our chan-

ces,” said teacher and choir conductorXolis-wa Booi.Booi said that their history aswinners put

them under pressure to succeed.“In the last few yearswe have been victors

in such competitions so we lived up to ourreputation,” she told City Vision.She said that they were not lying on their

laurels as they are now preparing for theprovincial competition to be held in June.“Our goal is Durban later in the year,

where the national competition will be held.We are confident that our school will be

among the stars in that competition.”Even the pupils are already smelling vic-

tory in Durban, she shared.Asked what the secret to their success

was, Booi said that dedication was the key.“The teachers, pupils and parents are ded-

icated and each of them plays a vital role inmaking sure that the schools choir is proper-ly prepared.The working relationship between all the

stakeholders is the reason for the continuedsuccess at our school,” she said.Simphiwe Wulana, principal, concured

with this statement, adding that the commu-nity has been very supportive of the schools’activities.“The extramusic lessons have also played

a huge role in the final outcome.Our children are very enthusiastic about

the choir, even those that have graduated to

high school still come back to get involvedin the choir,” said Wulana.“In 2007 wewere on a quest to recruit con-

ducters. We visited other schools and re-cruited them. We were very fortunate that

throughout the years those teachers werekind enough to share their knowledge andskills to other teachers,” he said.Wulana said that they were confident the

school will do well in Durban.

Buntu, from Delft South, wasselected fromover 150 entries, bya judging panel which includedYFM’s breakfast show host DJAnkle Tap-who launched thecompetition together with SirRichard Branson-and VirginMobile representatives.

“Music is a universal lan-guage, giving young South Afri-cans a voice and a vehicle forself-expression.

“AsVirgin has its roots inmu-sic, it is part of our culture tocontinually strive to unearthand support local talent,” saidVanda Harries, head of VirginMobile SA’s communications.

Vanda said the beauty of thecompetition offered them a plat-form to promote the importanceof voice in staying connected tofamily and friends.

Bett dips Salel on line at FNBCape Town 12 ONERUN firstIt was the perfect way to get the inauguralFNB Cape Town 12 ONERUN off the ground.A dip on the finish line and missing theworld’s best by 1 second.

Kenya’s Emmanuel Bett and Daniel Salelfought to the line with the decision, aftermuch deliberation, going the way of Bett ina time of 33 minutes and 32 seconds (33:32).Salel recording the same time.

In near perfect conditions the race got un-derway from the start in Milnerton at 9am.The country’s top 10 men and women werecontracted to take on the likes of DanielSalel, Emmanuel Bett, Moses Kipsiro andVivian Cheruiyot.

It was evident within the first 2km thiswas to be a hard and fast race. EmmanualBett, who has run a 27:51.16 for 10 000m, wasin no mood for a bunch finish and set a blis-tering pace from the gun. Within 2km of thestart the lead group of twenty plus had beenwhittled down to eight, Bett setting the pace.Salel running next to him with Kipsiro, Tim-othy Toroitich , Elroy Gelant, Gladwin Mza-zi and Lucky Mohale sitting on their tails.

By 3km Mohale had been blown away. Bettcontinued to race at 2:47/km (2 minutes 47seconds) pace which saw first Gladwin Mza-zi drop off (around 4km just before the raceentered the harbour). Gelant was to fadefrom the leading pack shortly thereafter,and when Kipsiro dropped just before thehalfway mark, it was down to three.

Bett was not going to let off the pace, de-spite feeling nauseous at around 6km. Asthey entered Government alley at the top of

Adderley Street (9km), there was still nosplitting Toroitich, Salel and Bett. 10km waspassed in 27:48 and the World Record was on.

Not even the short but sharp climb upBuitengracht Street separated the trio, butthat climb lost the leaders some valuable sec-onds as they chased the record and huntedfor the win.

With just over 1km to go Bett and Salelupped the pace and Toroitich fell off. Therace for the win went to the line as both Saleland Bett were awarded the time of 33:32, theofficials giving Bett the nod – 1 second off theWorld Record.

Timothy Toroitich finished third, MosesKipsiro fourth with the first South Africanhome being Elroy Gelant in fifth.

“I’m very happy with my run today,” saysBett. “I have had some injury problems inthe last few years, so this show’s me I’m ingood shape and getting back to where I was.I will be competing in the Prefontaine Clas-sic on 30 May in the 10 000m and then theKenyan trials. I want to qualify for the WorldChampionships”.

Gelant was ecstatic after his fifth place.“My hamstring is now all good. This was ahard race. The Kenyans were really flying,but I am very happy”.
