Crime will be on top of the agenda when theKhayelitsha Safety and Security Forum(KSSF) host a safety imbizo at the Khayelit-sha Rugby Stadium on Monday.TheDeputyMinister of Police Maggie Sotyuis expected to deliver the keynote address.KSSF chairman Mbuyiseli Boqwana said

the imbizowill engage “all community orga-nizations in a bid to strengthen relations be-tween the community and police.“This will help in the fight against crime,

isolate the enemies of safety, exposepoliticalchauvinism and promote genuine anticrime initiatives,” said Boqwana.

He said this opportunity will be used tobuild integrated interventions to crime andpromote good relations between spheres ofgovernment atnational, provincial and localgovernment.“No caring government can focus onpolit-

ical differences and ignore initiatives thatseek to stop violent crimes against wom-en,child murders, rape, robberies, mali-cious damage against local heritage,” hesaid. by heritage, he was referring to the de-struction of the famous OR. Tambo Hall.He called for political differences to be set

Sentenced to 30 years for mum and kidsA 45 year old man who brutally killed hisfamily at 36 block in Makhaza, in 2007 hasfinally been convicted for murder .Mpumzi Mangena was sentenced in the

Cape High Court in March.He was found guilty of setting his house

on fire, thus killing his girlfriend and herthree children in their sleep.The suspect was tried several times in

court but was mysteriously released.When the docket was brought back on the

court roll in 2014, Detective Seargent NcebaGojo of Harare SAPS detective branch leftno stone unturned until his conviction andsentence.Mangena has finally paid the price for the

crime he committed, hewas sentenced to 30years in prison for murder charges.

A Kuyasa man was shot dead in what hisfamily believes to have been a “revenge”killing on Monday evening.According to Thembisa Mpalantshane,

her nephew, Vuyisani Mpalantshane, 28,was confronted by an unknown group ofmales while walking with his friend froma tavern.“We are convinced that themotive for the

killing was because one of his friends wasfingered in a fatal shooting of a girl, whostayed just few streets away from us, lastyear,”.However, Sergeant Nosiphiwo Mtengwa-

na said: “At this stage the suspect(s) are un-known and themotive for themurder is un-known.Eye witnesses said they heard a gunshot

One of two police officers whocame to the rescue of aman be-ing assaulted by residents, inturn became robbery victimsafter one of the assailants in-stead dashed for him andsnatched the car keys out ofhis hands.The incident took place in

Site B’s Sihawu Street in Khayelitsha.The two police officers were called to the

scene of an on-going assault, where the vic-tim was accused of the crime of cellphone-theft by residents.According to Evelinah Notana, who wit-

nessed the robbery of the police, the allegedcellphone victim and others went aroundthe block looking for the suspect.After they caught up with the man, the

mob then took him to the cellphone ownershouse, where he was assaulted.Notana is a member of the local Neigh-

bourhood Watch.During the assault, she says, more people

joined in and the man was severely assault-ed.He is now fighting for his life in the Khay-

elitsha District Hospital.When the police arrived, they arrested

the man who allegedly lost hisphone to the assault victim. Butas they were doing so, a support-er dashed out of nowhere andsnatched the keys from thehands of the policeman.“He was protesting the arrest

of the man, and just grabbed thekeys,” she said.The man then ran away and

the police had to call for back-upfor a spare key.The keys were later found in the man’s

house the following day.Notana said she was upset with the turn

of events.“It is just bad, because police are here to

ensure our safety...how are we expectingpolice to do theirwork ifwe residents attackthem,” she shared.She pleaded with residents to stop inter-

fering with police in the line of their duties.Themanwho lost allegedly lost his phone

and the alleged key grabber are now all be-hind bars awaiting the days in court.The first is to face charges of assault with

intent to commit grievous bodily harm,while the latterwill face charges of theft anddefeating the ends of justice.Constable Thembakazi Jacobs confirmed

the incident and the charges.

collect the award abroadwas aneye opener for him.Whizz ICT was the only orga-

nisation from the continent tobenominated in the awards thatwere organised by South bySouth West Coast.The awards are meant to give

recognition to outstanding or-ganisations that uplift theircommunities.Qondela said he learnt a lot

during his stay on overseas soiland that he came backwith newideas which are set to positivelycontribute to upgrading servi-ces in the centre.“It was a good experience for

me. I networked and got to learnhow technology is used for edu-cation. There is a huge differ-ence between how technology isused overseas and here in thecountry. In USA children aretaught at a young age to use thecomputer.You find a child in an advance

stage of using computer like do-ing coding or programming,

while here most children arestill struggling to use a mouse.There is a lot that still needs tobe done in this country when itcomes to using technology foreducation,” Qondela said.He has made contact with a

number of centres in Britain,USA and other countries whichhe hopes will help him withideas to improve services.“I am grateful for the award.

I will make a follow up with thecentres that I networked with.I am hoping that something

goodwill come out from our col-laboration.There is a lot that we can

learn from them,” he added.Qondela also said there are

challenges that they are still fac-ing such as the lack of space,lack of equipment, human re-sources and other staff whichmust be added tomeet the grow-ing demand of their services.The centre was founded in

2008, in Site C, and provides,amongother services, computertraining, technology develop-ment, information services,communications services, pre-pares youth for the jobsmarket,develop small businesses, officeadministration and printingservices.They work close with UCT,

National Youth DevelopmentAgency (NYDA) and Harambe.

Former students of the Cape College of Edu-cation gathered in Surrey Estate on theweekend to launchaunionaimedat commit-ting teachers to a sense of nation building.Mthobeli Tengimfene, Cape College Union

(CCU) founding president said the purposeof the organisationwas to “ define the futureby being involved in educational matters”.This after one of their own had fallen on

hard-times.“CCU was started when we heard of the

plight of aCapeCollege graduate, hehad fall-en on hard times and he was assisted bygroup members,” he said.Tengimfene said since then it became a

“spontaneous movement that sought to re-vive the spirit of Cape College”He said the organisation will mobilise all

the CapeCollege alumni around the countryto “be actively involved” in educating thenation.Some of CCU’s plans include mentoring

programmes , creating resource centres anddeveloping a business wing for teachers.Former Cape College lecturer Zola Sikiti

who is now based in Durban hailed the for-mation of the union as a great step towards“rebuilding our education.”“We want teachers to be better equipped.

Cape Flats Shebeeners Association of theWesternCape said theywere fed upwith be-ing on the wrong side of the law.Carrying banners that read: “A better liv-

ing for all,”, “Why must our children go tobed hungry,” and “No food, no dignity, noright to life,”.Silas Nyombo was the man whose arrest

sparked the protest. He faced charges oftrading in liquor without a valid licence.During the protest, the group brandished

placards blaming both Western Cape Pre-mier Helen Zille and Police CommissionerGeneral Arno Lamoer for being the majorobstacles for potential applicants..

They claim that the process of applyingfor permit in the province is too long andthis is done to frustrate aspirations ofBlack and Coloured business people.Basil Williams said: “This is done so that

they can keep us down while the whiteowned retail outlets like Spar and Shopritecontinue to profit by selling alcohol in ourareas. Even if one meets the requirementsthe process takes years...whywait that longwhen we have families to feed,”.Williams said there was a backlog of

about 8000 of theirmemberswhose applica-tions were yet to be processed.“We want the process to be fast-tracked

so that owners stop living in fear of the po-lice. Our members get arrested on a dailybasis and it’s really bad because these peo-ple have families to feed,” he said, fuming.The association is planning to host a
