In fact, May 31st 1985 is termed Black Friday because of the tornado outbreak that hit Southern Ontario and some of the neighboring States. Since then, Barrie has worked towards minimizing the impact of high level storms and helping residents prepare for severe weather. “As it is 25 years this month since a devastating tornado hit Barrie, we are taking the opportunity to remind and educate people about severe summer weather, which is what we will do on 27 May at City Hall,” says Barrie’s Community Emergency Planner Bruce Griffin After a successful promotion of “Be Prepared” across the City during Emergency Preparedness Week in early May, Barrie is holding a Be Aware and Be Ready - Severe Summer Weather Safety event at City Hall on Thursday, May 27th to help residents prepare for potential hazardous summer weather. “While tornadoes are the most dramatic severe weather event during the summer, others can also be quite harmful. Indeed more damage is caused each year by strong winds that are not associated with a tornado.” The Severe Summer Weather Safety event will kick off at 11:00 am at the Rotunda in City Hall. Together with the Environment Canada Weather Office and Ontario Emergency Management, Barrie’s Emergency Planning Office will remind residents of the area’s weather risks; how the three levels of government are preparing; how individuals, families and businesses can prepare; and what to in the midst of severe summer weather. In the meantime, you can begin building awareness and readiness for weather emergencies. Here is the three step plan to ensuring your family’s safety during severe summer storms: 1. Know the risks – Although the consequences of disasters can be similar, knowing the risks specific to our community and our region can help us better prepare. In Barrie we face a number of potential summer hazards from heavy rain, damaging hail, destructive winds, tornadoes, and extreme heat waves to power outages, hazardous material accidents and communicable diseases. More information on local hazards and risks are found online. 2. Make a plan – Every Canadian household needs an emergency plan. It will help you and your family know what to do, when to do it, how to do it, where to go, and who to contact if disaster strikes. 3. Prepare a kit – During an emergency, we will all need some basic supplies. We may need to stay in our homes without access to even basic necessities or we may need to evacuate on very short notice. As it may take first responders such as fire, police and paramedic services some time to reach you, be prepared to be self sufficient for up to 72 hours. Also, do not forget to accommodate for anyone in your household who has special needs, such as a family member dependent on insulin, who has hearing problems or limited mobility. Finally, remember to plan for your pets. Just like people, they will require water and food, and they may also require a leash and identity tag. Find a complete document on emergency preparedness for people with special needs, how to plan for your pets and other tips on how to prepare for an emergency, Barrie provides lots of information in the Community Emergency Management section of www.barrie.ca. The City of Barrie has a wet field policy in an effort to avoid damage to our sports fields and injury to players. If the field/diamond is considered unplayable the City has the right to CANCEL any game booked due to wet field conditions. Wondering if your practice or game is still on or if a sports field is closed? Please call the Leisure, Transit and Facilities Inclement Weather Hotline 705-739-4215.
