SCOPE AND CONTENT: This finding aid provides a page-by-page description of Plat Book 2, with links to digital images of each page. Plat Book 2 is one printed and bound volume of material held within the overarching City Engineer Collection. Though other survey books are available within the City Engineer Collection, Plat Book 2 is the only plat book available. Plat Book 2 contains 119 pages of handwritten property descriptions and sketches made by professional survey engineers for individuals residing in the City of San Antonio between 1840 and 1884. These surveys also feature railroads with the railroad company names, R.R. The surveys were made by multiple surveyors employed by the City, most notably Francois Giraud, who was City Engineer from 1849-1853, and Gustav Freisleben, who was City Engineer from 1856-1870, and then again from 1872-1877. Most of the surveys were made upon the occasion of sale or transfer of property, in order to assess the boundaries and value of the property. The properties surveyed include those of notable San Antonio individuals and families, including J.D. Kampmann, Edward Steves, Adams and Wickes, the Maverick family, and the Dignowity family.
