FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE February 20, 2018 CONTACT: Victoria Meadows, LEAP 517-702-3387 ext. 209 office 517-331-0198 mobile City of Lansing Introduces $140,000 in New Creative Placemaking Projects Unique Augmented Reality Project Coming to Lansing Along With Ten Additional Creative Placemaking Projects LANSING, MI – Lansing Mayor Andy Schor was joined by LEAP, the Arts Council of Greater Lansing, and recent City of Lansing Arts Impact Project and First Impressions Program awardees in announcing $140,000 in creative placemaking projects this afternoon at Troppo in downtown Lansing. Announcements included a $75,000 Arts Impact Project, and ten First Impressions Program grant awards totaling $65,000 to local arts and cultural organizations. The Arts Impact Grant and First Impressions Program is funded through the City of Lansing and administered by LEAP and the Arts Council of Greater Lansing. “Investing in the arts is a critical piece of good economic development,” said Mayor Schor “These projects contribute to a vibrant, visual, and culturally diverse sense of place for those who call Lansing home, and they help us welcome visitors, and draw new businesses and new talent to the City. Congratulations to all the recipients and thank you to our great partners LEAP and the Arts Council of Greater Lansing for helping to advance these projects.” The Arts Impact Project is a significant opportunity for Lansing residents to activate spaces in the City of Lansing through creative placemaking efforts that are artistic and permanent. The First Impressions Grant Program funds public programs that further enhance the City of Lansing’s creative placemaking efforts, with the purpose of creating community-driven placemaking projects that capitalize on Lansing’s assets, inspiration and potential. Both programs contribute to creating a “sense of place” for residents, businesses, and visitors. “Placemaking projects and programs such as these represent opportunities for families and individuals in the region and across the globe to explore and grow intellectually,” said Bob Trezise, President and CEO of LEAP. “It’s this global atmosphere that will help us attract and retain the best talent and businesses in the world.” The 2018 Arts Impact Project is a large-scale visual art piece to be located in the heart of downtown Lansing. Using animation, sound effects, film and 3-D modeling, light installations will be projected onto prominent Lansing architecture, perfectly mapping the features of the building. The projection, created through new technology called video mapping or spatial augmented reality, will be several stories tall and nearly 5,000 square feet in total. The project will leverage the technical expertise of the Capital City Film Festival, utilizing Lansing Public Media Center projection-equipment and the creative horsepower of Light Harvest Studios in New York City. “Art installations such as these connect the community to contemporary art and can be found on landmark buildings all over the world, including the Sydney Opera House, the Brooklyn Bridge and the UK Parliament Building. This lighted, animated, installation will add a new dimension to Lansing’s skyline throughout the entire year” says Deborah E. Mikula, Arts Council executive
