Opera Australia Announcement Aida 2017 Opera on The Beach

Cr O’Neill attended.

Coolangatta’s Opera on the Beach will return to our shores in September 2017, with 6 magical nights of Opera Australia’s ‘Aida’ performed on the country’s only beachside stage.

This will be presented in partnership with the City and Tourism and Events Queensland, in association with Bleach*.

Opera on the Beach 2017 will be an unmissable culture event for both locals and visitors to enjoy.

The event promises vocal and pyrotechnic fireworks, colourful costumes and even local surf life savers getting in on the action.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again – this event has the perfect blend of sun, surf, sand and soprano...that is quintessential Gold Coast.

Customer Contact Visit

Our customer Contact staff do a great job being the frontline people residents speak with when they contact Council.

They are our behind the scenes heroes.

And on screen you’ll see some statistics that show just how well our Customer Contact Centres are performing…

Back in July 47% of calls were answered within 53 seconds and now we have seen an improvement where we are answering 50% of calls in the same time.

In July the average wait time was about 3 mins, and now it’s 2 mins.

Launch of Safe Seniors Travel Guide

Cr Vorster attended.

I launched The Seniors Safe Travel Guide at the International Café event at Robina Community Centre, as part of Seniors Week.

The guide highlights a range of safe, accessible and inexpensive transport options available to seniors on the Gold Coast.

As we age, we need to consider if our health allows us to continue to drive safely - that’s why we have produced a practical guide to help aging people maintain independence without relying on their cars.

The free guide is available at City of Gold Coast Customer Contact Centres, libraries or by phoning 1300 GOLD COAST.

Westpac Rescue Helicopter Flight In Celebration Of 40th Anniversary

Established in 1976, the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service proudly celebrated 40 years of saving lives in Queensland, and remains one of the oldest community-based rescue services in the world.

A helicopter surf rescue service was first trialled in Queensland during the Christmas period of 1965-66 on the Gold Coast.

Tourism was booming and the Gold Coast City Council backed a proposal from the Surfers Paradise Progress Association, which also saw the trial service renewed for the 1966-67 Christmas holidays at the instigation of the association.

The trial was deemed a success by locals, council and the lifesaving movement, and a need was identified to introduce a world-class helicopter surf rescue service in Queensland to support lifesaving efforts on our beaches.

In December 1976, the *Wales Helicopter Surf Rescue Service officially arrived in Queensland with the introduction of a Gold Coast based operation from a helicopter pad at Miami Hill.

Thanks to support from the Westpac Banking Corporation since the service’s inception, the Queensland Government and generous donations from the community, the Westpac Lifesaver Rescue Helicopter Service has grown from embryonic stage to a vital part of the Surf Life Saving Queensland (SLSQ) rescue operation.

Today, the service operates 2 lifesaver helicopters from hangars based on both the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast covering our coastline from Rainbow Beach to Rainbow Bay.

The service is committed to SLSQ’s vision of Zero Preventable Deaths in Queensland Public Waters and dedicates 700-patrol hours each year to aerial beach surveillance, shark alerts and search and rescue operations.

In 40 years of operation, the service has completed more than 10,000 missions and has saved more than 850 lives.

Vietnam Veterans Day Memorial Service & 50th Anniversary of The Battle of Long Tan

Cr Peter Young attended.

The 50th anniversary of the Battle of Long Tan was on 18 August — which is also Vietnam Veterans Day.

Almost 60,000 Australians served in Vietnam from 1962 until 1975, 521 lost their lives and more than 3,000 were wounded.

Many more veterans suffered, and continue to suffer, because of their service.

Thank you to the Vietnam Veterans Association of Australia Gold Coast Sub Branch for putting together such an important service.

Mayor's Seniors Week Concert

This concert is one of the most popular events on the City’s annual calendar.

This year’s concert was the most successful yet! Due to popular demand from the 2 sessions last year, we increased the sessions to 3 this year.

Cr Gates opened the 1st session, I opened the 2nd session and Cr Baildon opened the 3rd session.

And I’m pleased to say we reached capacity at each of the 3 sessions – so that’s 1800 seniors who attended this year’s Seniors Concerts.

The concert took seniors on a journey from the 1950s, 60s and beyond with a star-studded line up of internationally renowned rock‘n’roll tribute artists: Dean Vegas (Elvis Presley), Dennis Knight (Johnny O’Keefe) and Kris Knight (Buddy Holly), accompanied on stage by The Legends Show Band.

The concert was part of the broader Seniors Week activities across the Gold Coast, celebrating the contributions and achievements of seniors.

Launch of Better Parks Survey

Cr Owen-Jones attended.

I launched our city-wide survey at the Lions Park in Helensvale – which had a $160,000 refurbishment.

This park is just 1 of 2200 that the City is responsible for on behalf of ratepayers.

This year, we’ve budgeted $77.3 million for our parks towards maintaining and protecting our open public spaces and creating new parks for everyone to enjoy.

But the needs of people that use our parks are changing so that’s why we are launching this city-wide survey to ensure what people want in their parks is planned and budgeted for.

I encourage everyone to complete the online survey at gchaveyoursay.com.au/parks – those who complete the survey also go in the draw to win one of two $500 bicycle vouchers on offer (the survey closes on 9 September).

International Delegation Visit from Jinging, China

I had the pleasure of welcoming a delegation from Jinging to discuss future cooperation between our two cities.

I have previously signed an Agreement of Friendship and Cooperation with Jining when I visited the city in 2014.

It was Jining that donated the Confucius Statue which is now located in Gold Coast Chinatown

Launch of Road Safety Week with QPS

Cr Vorster attended.

As part of the launch of Queensland Road Safety Week I also announced the City’s plans to install (by 30 June 2017) another 24 speed awareness devices as part of our ongoing contribution to road safety.

Speeding is a major factor in serious and fatal injury crashes on the Gold Coast and that is why we installed 15 speed awareness cameras across 35 priority locations where speeding has been an issue.

6 million cars have gone past these devices since we installed them.

More than half of motorists were speeding at these locations prior to a device being installed, but with the devices now in place, this is down to about 10%.

The reality is 33% of traffic fatalities involve excessive speed as a contributing factor.

The signs display a smiling face or a reminder to slow down and are regularly rotated around roads experiencing speed issues.

The additional speed awareness devices will increase our number deployed to 39, which is an increase of road coverage by 160%.

Painting of Tallebudgera Underpass Mural

Cr Pauline Young attended.

Residents ask me what more we can do to reduce graffiti, so yesterday we used colourful public artwork as a graffiti prevention tool.

Aspiring artist, Fiona Mackenzie, who usually spends her working days painting over and removing unsightly tags from public walls, buildings and footpaths is using her skills to reduce graffiti and beautify a graffiti hotpot at the Tallebudgera underpass.

City of Gold Coast App

I wanted to highlight once again the great work of both the City of Gold Coast App and the speediness of officers to rectify problems.

In this instance, I had a broken bin as you can see in the photo…

I took a photo of the damaged bin and reported it through the App and within 3 days my bin was replaced with a new one.

This is such a practical App that really empowers residents to seek out and have various issues around the city fixed efficiently and swiftly.

Using the app is easy - Download it to your mobile, open a report, take a photo and submit it.

It’s been so successful that over 6000 people have downloaded the App since we first introduced it 2 years ago.

I certainly want to see this fantastic and practical App continue – and once again thank you to the officers for acting so quickly.
