matthias studied Access to higher education diploma in Business.

“On the course I learnt about social enterprise, not-for-profit business and how to become an entrepreneur. i decided that i wanted to start a business not just to make money, but to help people. i had not heard of access courses before, but they are an amazing and intensive route to university for people like me who want a career change.”

matthias went on to study Business at City university. he has now launched his own business selling brightly patterned shirts to raise money to help train local teachers in Burma.

niCki pringle

Nicki found that taking the Ceramics course has helped build her confidence as she has to live with the use of only one of her arms. yet with the help of her tutors, nicki has been able to learn new techniques and produce some beautiful pieces of work.

“i have enjoyed the course so far as we are in for a full day on monday so you are able to take your time, concentrate and really focus on your work rather than having to rush. my tutors are really good. if you’ve got problems or are struggling with something they always help you deal with it. they create a comfortable and calming place to learn and work.”

At a very low point in her life, while trying to overcome a serious assault, tracy could no longer carry on her job due to her injuries. she came to the College to work out her options.

“i was so nervous as i’m dyslexic, did not have any gCses, and had been out of education for a long time but the careers team were brilliant. Bit by bit i built up my skills and experience from studying counselling theory to therapeutic and psychotherapeutic diplomas.

“i now own my own counselling service and manage volunteers supporting substance misusers. i am a creative clinical supervisor and council and use hypnotherapy with clients across the world on skype. i also teach at the College who have been like a family to me ever since i walked in the door.”

At city and islington college, we believe that nothing should stand in the way of you achieving your ambition. The government offers funding for adult courses based on your age, the course you choose and your employment status. The criteria for funding can be quite complicated but we’re here to help and will be able to assess your eligibility at enrolment.

In this guide you will notice varying prices for each course where concessions are available labelled as co-funded and unfunded (see Fig. 1). These relate to the fee that UK/EU students will need to pay depending on whether they are eligible to receive funding or not. If you are eligible for full funding your course may be free.

Fees explAinedtypes oF Funding

Fully-funded: Tuition, exam fees and essential materials and resources are funded by the government.

Co-funded: Students are required to pay a contribution towards the cost of their learning, with tuition, exam fees and materials partially funded by the government.

unfunded: If students do not meet the criteria for funding they are required to pay the full fee however payment plans and Advanced Learning Loans are available on some courses (see 24+ Advanced Learning Loans on the opposite page).
