Introduction

The Citrix License Server VPX is a self-contained Linux based virtual appliance that allows you to quickly and easily deploy licensing for Citrix XenServer in your environment. The appliance can be brought online in your environment in just a few easy steps:

Import the appliance to your XenServer host or pool of hosts

Configure basic networking, specifying IP address, hostname, and other network information

Use the License Administration Console to upload licenses for your XenServer hosts.

Please Note: This release of the License Server VPX, while capable of hosting any Citrix license file, is fully supported for licensing XenSever hosts only. We do not recommend using this appliance for production deployments of products other than Citrix XenServer.

A future release of the License Server VPX will support all Citrix Products. If you have comments, feedback, or feature requests – please email [email protected].

Installing the Appliance

System Overview

The License Server VPX is a single Virtual Machine which contains pre-installed components designed to run on Citrix XenServer. The License Server VPX requires 128MB of RAM and 8 GB of disk space to run.

NOTE: For environments serving more than 150 Citrix servers and/or 2000+ users, we recommend increasing the RAM dedicated to the License Server VPX to 256mb.

Prerequisites

This virtual appliance is designed to run only on Citrix XenServer 5.6. You must have a running XenServer 5.6 environment configured, with a separate XenCenter management console to proceed with the Appliance import. The Appliance requires approximately 8 GB of disk space on the default Storage Repository inside your XenServer pool.

Obtaining the Appliance

The License Server VPX is packaged in .ZIP format. Once you have downloaded the appliance from the Citrix website, place the file into a single folder on your hard drive extract with your Windows or Linux unzip tool. After extraction, you will see the .XVA importable appliance file.

Running the Appliance on Citrix XenServer

The Appliance is distributed as a virtual machine system configured in .XVA format. In XenServer, you can import XVA files directly from the XenCenter console.

To import the Appliance into XenServer:

Open XenCenter. Click on the server you would like to import the Appliance to, and select “Import”

Browse to the location of your extracted package and choose the License_Server_VPX.XVA package.

5

Choose a Home Server for your VM – this is the server that the VM will start automatically on. Alternately, you can click on a XenServer pool, in which case the VM will automatically start on the most suitable host in that pool.

Choose a storage repository for the VM virtual disk to be stored on. This repository must have a minimum of 8GB of free space.

6

Define network interfaces for your VM. In this release, the License Server VPX is designed to communicate on a single virtual NIC. Choose a network that is accessible to the Citrix Servers you would like to provide license services to.

Click “Finish” to import the Appliance.

The import process will take approximately 2-3 minutes, depending on your hardware configuration.

Once the VM has been imported, it will appear inside your XenCenter management Console. You can boot the virtual machine in XenServer by right clicking on the VM name and choosing Start.

Using the License Server VPX

You now have a fully functional Citrix License Server running on your XenServer pool.

At first boot, you will be presented with a quick setup wizard to configure networking of the Appliance.

8

Configuring the Appliance for First Use

First, choose a root password for the appliance. This should be a strong password that only administrators will know.

Next, supply a hostname and domain for the appliance.

Important: Choose a hostname carefully: most Citrix license files are tied to the case-sensitive hostname of your license server.

9

If you choose DHCP for your network type, network information will automatically be obtained. Otherwise, enter your IP address, etc.

Enter an admin password for the licensing service. This is the password you will use to log in to the License Administration Console.

10

Configuration is complete.

Note that licenses themselves are configured from a web-based interface, available on port 8082 as shown in the URL.

If you made an error in configuration, you can log into the appliance as root with the password you specified, and type the command reset_licensing.sh to re-run the setup wizard.

If you are familiar with Citrix Licensing, you now have a fully functioning License Administration Console available to you at the URL specified above. Full documentation for the Citrix License Server is available at: http://support.citrix.com/proddocs/topic/licensing-1161/lic-licensing-1161.html.

If you are unfamiliar with the License Management Console, follow the next steps to import your first license.

13

As noted on the previous screen, to ensure that licenses are available for checkout immediately, click the Administer link on the Vendor Daemon Configuration page,

and then select Reread license files.

That’s it!

Your license has now been applied and your License Server VPX is available to answer license requests from any Citrix products in your environment.

Note for advanced users: the License Server Appliance uses iptables to provide firewall protection. Changing the license server port will require a corresponding change to iptables configuration.
