Authors in APA Referencing

Introduction

There is an old biblical saying that goes, “Give to Caesar, what belongs to Caesar”. This

simply means recognition should be given to those who deserve it. With that being said, there

several are different ways for giving credit to a person for their work. The format is determined

on two things;

The number of authors

The physical position of the referencing in regards to whether it‟s within the text orcontained in the bibliography

In-Text Citations

Two Authors – the most common is to list the authors in parentheses each time the work has

been cited word-for-word. The ampersand, (&) should be used to separate the names.

Alternatively the names can be used in a phrase.

(Webster & Oxford, 1978)

Or

Webster and Oxford (1978) states …

Three to Five Authors – the most common format to cite the authors is to list their last names

separated by commas along with the year the work was published all enclosed in parentheses.

(Ralhound, Septins, Quentin & Richmond, 1999)

Six or More Authors - The first author's name should be used, then followed by et al. in the

format below

or

(Harris et al., 2001)

Reference Listing

One Author – The last name followed by the author‟s initial should be listed, followed by the

year of publishing, and the title of the work.

Mauti, T.J. (2014) The Advancements of Human Psychology

Two Authors – the authors‟ names should be listed as they normally would be with a single

author however the two names should be separated by an ampersand (&) rather than „and‟.

Donaldson, K.Q & Mickelson F. (1989). Genes & Inheritance

Three to Seven Authors – Authors‟ names should be listed as per the norm, last name followed

by initials. However, this time „&‟ should not separate them but instead a comma and the last

author to be listed should be separated by an ampersand.

Caldwell, J.H., Hardwell, K.O. & O’Neils L.K. (2014). Benefits of Exercise:What You Don’t Know!

More Than Seven Authors – List the authors‟ names as per the norm; last names followed by

initials and separated by commas. However, after the sixth author an ellipsis should be replaced

for the following authors and then list the last author name.

Harlem J.K., Pompelli K.K., Freymond L.I., Nderit W.Y., Kolpine T.W.,Warren B.K. …. Hansen V.L. ( 2001) The Conventions of Every Discipline.

Economoics, 47, 110-112.

However, in the rare occasion of a document containing no author, the in-text citation format

should include the title of the work in quotation marks followed by a comma and the year of

publishing, all enclosed in parentheses.

The eyes are some of the most intriguing parts of the human body. (“Seeing

In The Dark,” 1997)

In very rare instances, „Anonymous‟ is given. In the refer ence list use „anonymous‟ as the

author‟s name and the year the work was published.
