To begin the web‐based course in Responsible Conduct of Research go to www.citiprogram.org and complete
the following steps to register for the course. (Throughout the process, you will see question mark “bubbles” ‐
hover your mouse over them for more information.)
If you are a returning user please log in with your username and password. If you are a new user click Register.
STEP 1: Select your institutional affiliation. Using the drop‐down arrow under Participating Institutions, select
Georgia Institute of Technology. (You may choose only one institution in this section, but may add others later.)

STEP 2: Enter your name and your GT email address (@gatech.edu). If you would like to enter a second email
address you can, but it is not required.
STEP 3: Enter a username and password. Your username should be 4‐50 characters and include letters,
numbers, and symbols “@”, “.”, or “_”. Any spaces or other characters will not be accepted. Then type a
security question and answer. Be sure to choose an answer that is not related to your password and memorable
for you but difficult for others to guess.
STEP 4: Enter your Gender, Ethnicity and Race. If you prefer, you may check “I would rather not disclose”.
STEP 5: Next select if you plan to ask for any continuing education credits (CME/CEUs) for taking this course.
Choose the appropriate answer. Then select if you would like to be contacted for a course survey (Yes or No).
*Note: You may plan to ask for CME or CEU credits if you ALREADY HAVE a professional license in one or more of
the following fields: medicine, dentistry, nursing, pharmacy, psychology, social work, teaching or another
licensed field.
If you don’t know, you can
check “Not sure. Ask me later”.
STEP 6: Provide the following information required by GIT. Your language preference, institutional email address
(@gatech.edu), gender, highest degree completed, GTID, the department where you will be conducting
research, your role in conducting the research, and department office telephone number.
*Note: Only fields with an asterisk (*)
are required.
Important: GT ID is on your BUZZ Card
and starts with a 90XXXXXXX (and is 9
digits). This is necessary to ensure
credit for taking the modules. Enter your 9 digit GTID here

STEP 7: Next read the question and text below and click the box(es) next to the statement(s) that applies to you.
(You MUST select the Responsible Conduct of Research option to start an RCR course.) Click NEXT.
This will bring you to the RCR menu. Select the ONE option that most directly relates to your discipline or area
of research. (Consult with your academic program or advisor if you are not sure which option to select.) Then
click NEXT.
You must select the RCR option.
This selection also applies to PURA
students.
You may select any of
these five options.
STEP 8: Make sure Georgia Institute of Technology appears here. If you are affiliated with any other
institutions, click “Affiliate with another institution”. If you are not, then select “Finalize Registration.”
STEP 9: You will receive a confirmation email at the email address that you first entered. Complete your
registration by clicking on the link in the email. Then log back into CITI through the link provided on the next
screen.
This is the Main Menu you will now see upon logging in to CITI. From here you can begin work on your course,
add another course, add an institution, change your login information and email address, update your GT
profile, and apply for CME/CEU credits if you later find that you need to. You can also click “View Instructions
page” to see the Georgia Tech’s instructions for how to complete your required modules. Under “My Courses” it
should list the name of the RCR course you have selected. Click on the name of the course to begin your
modules.

STEP 10: This is an example of the Responsible Conduct of Research for Engineers Gradebook. You must
complete the required modules with a combined score of 80 to pass the course. (Your course name and specific
modules may be different from the ones shown here, but it must say “Responsible Conduct of Research”.)

STEP 13: Next carefully read the Assurance Statement. At the bottom of the page click the circle next to the
statement that applies to you. Then click SUBMIT.
This will return you to the Gradebook where you can begin working on the course modules. The CITI Program
will take you through each required module in order. (ALL modules listed under “Required Modules” are
required for the course. You may take the “Optional Modules” if you are interested, but you will not receive
credit for them.)
Remember : You do not have to complete all the modules at one time. You may enter and leave the site after
completing any module. To re‐enter the site go to www.citiprogram.org and enter your username and
password. Once in the Gradebook you will be able to enter the course and look up which modules have yet to be
completed. The time required to complete each unit ranges between 30 to 45 minutes. The total time involved
is estimated to be 3‐5 hours.
Once you have completed all of the required modules go to the “CITI RCR Course Completion Page” to view and
print your certificate. Keep a copy of the certificate for your records.
