Dear Readers,

It has been said that money can’t buy happiness but there has been much talk during the financial crisis about what makes a country happy.

Britain it seems, has been sliding down the ‘Happiness Index’, whatev-er that means, and it was all started by Prime Minister David Cameron introducing a UK Happiness Index.

It seems that under one criteria- the issuing of anti-depressants to the public – Blackpool is the most unhappy place in Britain.

But what should Christians be seeking? Studies have shown that many church goers would say that they feel happier when they go to church! And the study has shown a difference in people’s happiness and con-tentment between those who go to church and those who do not.

But Christians going to church should be evaluating their ‘Holiness In-dex’ rather than their ‘Happiness Index’ That’s because God’s intention and design for us is to be holy in this world and happy in the next.

Initial research concluded that it is health, family and relationships that are the most important ‘happiness’ ingredients for most people. Whether the £2 million spent in uncovering that sensational revelation was a worthwhile investment is a question that may spring to mind. But interestingly, the report also discovered that the importance of Christian faith on peoples lives and thoughts had been underestimated.

The genuine gospel could be much more accurately conveyed in the line “Come to Jesus and He will make you holy”. Jesus came into this world to die on a cross so as to deal with our sin. Now it is certainly true that there is a connection between happiness and holiness.

It is the lack of holiness in our lives that is ultimately the root cause of most unhappiness. But in our naivety we tend to get things the wrong way round. God’s primary will for us in this world is holiness, and he is at times quite willing to allow circumstances or situations to occur

Come along for some Family Fun

Messy Church is part of our cycle of Friday Night Fun

events and takes place on the second Friday of each month during term time.

We start out at 4pm with a variety of craft activities which link in with the Bible story or theme for

the session. Then it’s story and song time before we finish up with a cooked meal and pudding! All we ask is for £1 per person to cover some of the costs.

Messy Church is for the whole family or for children and their carers, so join us at The Salvation Army in Albert Rd, Southsea, for a fun-filled family time.

Let’s pray for...

Our Service of Remembrance (Nov 10th) - that those who attend will find it an encouraging and God-blessed occasion. Pray too for those who still suffer from the physical and emotional scars of war.

Bdm Trevor Sivyer and helpers as they prepare for the ‘Christmas Fayre’ (Nov 23rd) - may the many on the peripheral of our fellowship who attend be greeted by a wonderful sense of God’s presence.

The preparations for the Christmas Programme - that they will be God-centred.

Divisional Envoy (Doctor) Russell Rook as he prepares his thoughts and mind to lead another ‘Carols at the Kings’ (Dec 1st) - that his words will be both encouraging and challenging ; that those who attend will receive a fresh, life-changing perspective on the Christmas Story.

Pray also for Margaret and Mark and their special responsibilities for making the evening come alive.

That the Holy Spirit will work with each one of us, so that we each add something positive to the work and witness of our Corps and Community, with Jesus at the forefront of all we do.

HarvestHarvest Celebrations, Sunday October 6th 2013

This year’s Harvest Celebrations featured all aspects of the wide spectrum of activities linked to Southsea Salvation Army.

The Sunday Club members added their Harvest gifts to the displays by Noah’s Ark Nursery and Lighthouse After School Club and we were treated to singing and poetry prepared by the Toddlers and Sunday Club preschoolers.

Brief expressions of thanksgiving were shared by representatives from around the Corps. The Singing Company, YP Band, Senior Band and Songsters also contributed specially prepared Harvest music.

The day’s leaders, Darren & Lynne Shaw (Captain), threaded the theme of Psalm 65 throughout, especially verses 4 & 11:

Blessed are those you chooseand bring near to live in your courts!We are filled with the good things of your house, of your holy temple.You crown the year with a bountiful harvest; even the hard pathways overflow with abundance.

A buffet-style Harvest Supper was enjoyed after the evening meeting, rounding off a day filled with thanks for the good things of God.

Remembrance Sunday

October Café Church

Please note that our morning worship will begin at 10:55am so that we are all able to observe the two-minute silence at 11am.

Our Service of Remembrance is to be held at 6pm in the presence of the Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress of Portsmouth (Councillor Lynne Stagg and Mrs Anne Taulbut).Children from St John’s College and Portsmouth High School will also be participating. Please be sure to come and make our guests feel very welcome.

A Sunday evening Café Church meeting led by Major Joyce Dixon, saw God given talents used in a varied programme of music and

spoken word. Eight members of the Corps whose home country is Burma (Myanmar) prepared and served hot Burmese food. They later sang, accompanied by guitar, ‘Jesus Christ our Saviour’ after which Sandar spoke of Christian life in Burma. Major Mary Wolfe (CO) played the guitar and sang ‘I’m His own child’. Home League member Hilary Westbrook recited a poem written by her late Father and Dave Morris and Mike Stubbings played a cornet duet ‘The Londonderry air’. A local charity fund-raising Ukulele group ‘The Pompey Pluckers’ led popular community

singing. Nikki Bone sang a vocal solo ‘The Prayer’, which was followed by a Bible message from Mark Rigby entitled ‘The purpose of Mission’. A Final song by our Burmese comrades ended the meeting followed with a benediction. T.M.

What a wonderful opportunity this is to offer our family, friends, neighbours and work colleagues a really good evening out as

well as a chance to hear the real Christmas story.

Sunday 8th December, 6pm

Invite your friends and family along for a relaxed, engaging evening with “Euph Fellowship” - a Euphonium Quartet specially formed

for the evening. There may even be some never-before-heard music (perhaps never to be heard again!?) and there will most definitely be plenty of Christmas tunes, good music and a clear Christmas message.

There will, as Café Church regulars will know, be cakes and refresh-ments available throughout the evening.

Way back in the early 50’s I did my national service in the RAF.After the basic training, I was sent to an aerodrome near

Doncaster, and was told it would be important for me to choose a sport, and so be a part of one of the related teams.

Now I didn’t like any of the sports, so what was I to do? I hatedRugby and only ‘watched’ football.

Finally I chose to be a part of the Tug-of-war team. I was soon inthe first team, as I discovered it was all very easy.

After digging my heels in and leaning back- I had all the strength required.

In those days I didn’t know God, or even wanted to. What acontrast life is.

Now at the other end of life in which its most important aspectis knowing God and His strength at all times. Fighting physical weakness is my daily battle.

Amazingly my daily bible readings say little or nothing aboutphysical strength. However it is made clear that one of life’s most important lessons is found in God’s word to Paul. 2nd Cor. 12:9 “My grace is sufficient for you, for My power is made perfect in weakness.”K.G.
