    Kjartan Midjord

    Hi, everybody!My name is Kjartan and I come from the Faroe Islands. I am 26 years old and I work at a daycare center where children from theages of 6 to 10 come to spend their day until their parents get off from work.

    I have two younger siblings, a sister and a brother. I also have a 5 year old boxer dog called Akita. She looooves to play with hertoys and wont let anyone else play with them. She also enjoys training and is CRAZY for food.

    In my spare time I work out at the local gym and go for walks in the incredibly beautiful Faroese nature. I also enjoy eating goodfood, reading books, watching movies, playing board games and many more things.

    Hello, my name is Elma. I am 11 years old and I am in the 5. class. In my class we are 10 pupils, 6 girlsand 4 boys, and there are 100 pupils in the school.

    I live in a small village called Hvalba in the Faroe Islands, we are only 700 residents, so we all knoweach other.

    My parentes are called Nita and Jens Mortan. I have 2 sisters, Amalia and Rebekka, and 2 brothersManne and Johannes. I like to play football, piano and the cornet.

    The Faroe Islands

    Location and sizeSituated in the heart of the Gulf Stream in the North Atlantic at 6200'N, the FaroeIslands lie northwest of Scotland and halfway between Iceland and Norway. The ar-chipelago is composed of 18 islands covering 1399 km2 (545.3 sq.miles) and is 113km (70 miles) long and 75 km (47 miles) wide, roughly in the shape of an arrowhead.There are 1100 km (687 miles) of coastline and at no time is one more than 5 km (3

    miles) away from the ocean. The highest mountain is 882 m (2883 ft) above sea leveland the average height above sea level for the country is 300 m (982 ft).

    ClimateThe weather is maritime and quite changeable, from moments of brilliant sunshine tomisty hill fog, to showers. The Gulf Stream encircling the islands tempers the cli-mate. The har-bours never freeze and the temperature in winter time is very moderateconsidering the high latitude. Snowfall occurs, but is shortlived. The average tem-

    perature ranges from 3C in win-ter to 11C in the summer. In sheltered areas, thetemperature can be much higher, but the air is always fresh and clean no matter whatthe season.

    PopulationThe population is 48,296 (March 2004). The capital of Trshavn has a population of18,400. Klaksvk, the second largest town in the Faroes, has a population of approx.

    5,000.Form of GovernmentSince 1948, the Faroe Islands have been a self-governing region of the Kingdom ofDenmark. It has its own parliament and its own flag. It is not, however, a member ofthe European Union and all trade is governed by special treaties.

    Language SpokenFaroese is the national language and is rooted in Old Norse. Nordic languages arereadily understood by most Faroese, and English is also widely spoken, especiallyamong the younger people.

    ReligionReligion plays an important part in Faroese culture and over 80% of the population

    belong to the established church, the Evangelical-Lutheran. 10% of the population

    belong to the Christian Brethern (Plymouth Brethern).IndustryThe fishing industry is the most important source of income for the Faroes. Fish prod-ucts account for over 97% of the export volume. Tourism is the second largest indus-try, followed by woollen and other manufactured products.

    Currency:

    On Faroe Islands we dont use euro, but instead we still use danish krones.

    Since 1948 we have used special banknotes with Faroese motives. Theexamples below are with 50,100 and 200 kroners notes. Other facts about thecurrency are:

    Rhubarb jam.1 kg Rhubarbs (sticks)

    1 kg Sugar

    1 tablespoon kalsciumchlorid

    Rins the rhubarbs, cut in small pieces and boil together with sugar. Boils untilright consistens is achived, app. 5-5 hours. When finished boiling mix theKalsciumchlorid in. Put jam in glasjars rinsed with atamon and close them.

    Bread. l lukewarm water125 gr rye flour

    2 tablespoons baking soda

    1 tablespoon baking powder1 bakingspoon salt

    App. 500 gr wheat flour

    Put water in a bowl. Mix. Baking soda, baking powder and salt in together withthe rye flour. Then elta wheate flour in until the dow loosen from the bowl.Make a drl out of the dow and cut slices in. Bake for 60 min. At 200 degrees

    celcius in the middle of the oven.

    From the folklore.

    The sealwomen.

    The origin of seal's is from humans, who has destructed themselves byjumping from a cliff. Once a year these seals comes together to celebrateand dance. The seals meets on the years thirteenth night on a cliffy beachnearby a cave, which the sea has erode into the rock. One young man haslearned that the seals meets nearby where he lives. He is curious anddecides to find out if this is true. On the tirteenth night he hides behinde alarge stone, where he is told that the seals meets. After sunset he see a lot ofseals svimming towards him. The seals climb ashore and undress from theresealskin, and lay it down on the cliffs. When the seals were out of theirskins, they looked like ordinary people. The young man behind the stonesees a very pretty young sealwomen undress from her skin. He noticeswhere she laid the skin, and secretly he takes it and hide it. The seal danceand enjoy themselves all night on the cliff and inside the cave. Beforesunrise they again dress in their sealskins and swim away. All but one seal

    went away, the only left behinde was the young sealwomen ,who couldntfind her sealskin. At last, by the help of the smell of her sealskin, she findsthe young man. She tenderly begs the young man to give her the skin, butthe young men, who had fallen in love with her, denies. Instead he goeshome and the sealwomen followed him.The man hide the sealskin in a locked chest and always kept the key in his

    belt. The young men and the sealwomen now lives as a couple and get twochildrens. Once the man is out on the sea fishing, together with others, on arowboat. He catches a fish but suddenly he notice that the key is missing.Immediately he says to the fishermens: Today I lost my wife. They allstops fishing, and row the boat home again. At home the man find thechildren sitting very quiet alone. They explained that the sealwoman hadfound the key. When she opened the chest and found hear sealskin , she

    couldnt stop her self. She first ensured that nothing happened to thechildren by putting the fire out, and hide away all knifes and dangerousobjects. She than went down to the beach, dressed in the sealskin and swimsaway.
