Experience the True Power of the Grid
Cisco delivers an end-to-end, IP-based securecommunications infrastructure for the smartgrid from generation to businesses andhomes.
Cisco Smart Grid solutions help utilities:
Optimize grid efficiency through bettercorrelation of power supply and demand
Reduce energy network outages anddisruptions
Increase the resiliency and security of thepower system
Increase environmental sustainability
Cisco Services for Smart Grid
Deploy a Fully Connected, Secure Energy Network System
The backbone of a successful smart grid operation is the reliable,
resilient, secure, and manageable infrastructure that transports the two-
way diagnostic and control communications among meters, substations,
data collection systems, energy management systems, and mobile field
systems.
Cisco is the leader in the design and the implementation of end-to-end,
converged infrastructure for wired and wireless communications. Cisco
and its partners have a comprehensive product and service portfolio to
design and implement the networking infrastructure of all components in a
smart grid. Jointly, Cisco and its partners work with utility customers, in
various stages of planning and deployment, to design and implement IP-
based, smart grid infrastructure as their architecture for the future.
Cisco and partner smart grid services are based on industry best
practices and proven methodologies to help utilities:
Plan, build, and run resilient, converged networks that support
smart grid solutions
Maintain high levels of reliability, performance, and manageability
Achieve and maintain compliance with regulatory requirements
Create and maintain an energy-efficient, secure data center for control operations
Protect against both the cybersecurity and the physical security threats to utility data and utility physical assets
Improve efficiency and lower greenhouse gas emissions
Cisco
Smart Grid Services enable an interoperable, resilient, self-healing infrastructure through the entire smart grid
value chain, from secure control centers, intelligent generation plants, substation automation, and mobile operations
to home energy management and automated metering. Cisco Smart Grid Services can help optimize the entire grid
architecture, operations, and maintenance.
Plan Services
Ciscos planning services are predeployment activities that help with efficient design and smooth implementation of
smart grid solutions for demand side management (DSM), demand response, transmission and distribution
automation, energy management, advanced metering infrastructure (AMI), and mobile workforce.
Cisco Smart Grid planning services include:
Business Strategy and Architecture Assessment: Prepares a multiyear smart grid infrastructure
transformation roadmap, including future-state business models, high-level architecture and design, release
strategy and implementation plans, and recommendations on how to successfully manage the transformation.
Technical Requirements Development: Reviews the business use cases for AMI, neighborhood area
network, distribution/transmission automation, data center/compute, energy management, and mobility and
develops detailed technical requirements based on business strategy, use cases, and solution-specific
conditions.

Technical Architecture Design: Develops a high-level design (HLD) that helps ensure scalable, resilient
network architecture for home infrastructures, intermediate wireless mesh networks, field area networks,
substation communications, generation plant communications, backhaul/data center networking for smart data
transfer, and mobile service systems communications.
Utility Compliance Assessment: Analyzes internal controls and procedures for regulatory compliance,
identifies gaps in security controls, and provides recommendations to address high-priority vulnerabilities.
Physical Security Site Vulnerability Assessment: Analyzes requirements for access control, surveillance,
and operations and provides recommendations to improve physical security.
Cisco Data Center Architecture Assessment: Analyzes business and technical requirements and identifies
opportunities to improve data center architecture. Service deliverables include analysis and recommendations
for next steps.
Build Services
Cisco Services provides readiness assessments, detailed design development, and implementation support in the
build phase. Designs take into consideration all communication requirements for a smart grid solution, including
communication infrastructures at the home, intermediate wireless mesh networking, WAN communications, substation networking, the communications infrastructure inside generation plants, and mobile workforce enablement
Cisco Smart Grid build services include:
Solution Design: Develops a detailed, low-level design (LLD) for grid communication infrastructure, network
routing and switching, WAN communications, network and physical security, unified communications, data
center networking, and mobility.
Network and Physical Security Design: Develops a detailed, low-level security design that meets
requirements for physical and information security.
Smart Grid Solution Deployment: Provides implementation plans and custom deployment and integration
support for smart grid solutions, including secure implementation of communication infrastructure and network
services, and support for system integration of hardware and software for control center networks,
transmission, and distribution communications, DSM and demand response communications, energy
management, and AMI communications.
Network and Physical Security Deployment: Speeds deployment of integrated security solutions with plan,
design, and implementation services providing readiness assessments, detailed designs, and deployment
support for integration of the solution.
Run Services
Cisco Services draw upon Ciscos deep experience in leading major industry transformations that include not only
planning and building communication architectures, but also operating large, complex networks that deliver high
performance and reliability for business-critical applications and operations.
Cisco Smart Grid run services include:
Smart Grid Network Optimization: Maintains and continuously improves communication infrastructure
performance, high availability and high quality of service in the smart grid network with ongoing assessments,
technology planning, and architecture reviews, as well as expert consultation, support, and guidance to staff at
critical stages
