Fact
Do you know ….
What is the most reliable communications system in the emergency event?
Answer = radio communications system!

Basic Radio
The Elemental Radio
• For the purposes of this discussion, all radios have three basic things in common:
Simplex Operation
• One way communication• Transmitter to Receiver• On the same frequency (channel)
Half Duplex Operation
• One way communication at any given time• Transmitter to Receiver
Full Duplex Operation
• Simultaneous two way communication is possible• Two transmitters and two receivers• Requires a “pair” of frequencies
Conventional Radio Systems
• The “original” radio systems and still the most pervasive• Each “channel” requires a frequency or frequency pair• Voice, Signaling, Control and Data transport are all
analog
Trunked Radio Systems
• More efficient use of bandwidth than Conventional systems
• More complex system then Conventional systems• A pool of frequencies is used to provide “talkgroups”
Repeaters
• Used to extend the “footprint” of a radio system• Use a transmit and receive frequency pair per “channel”• Like to be up high on mountains, buildings or towers

The Underlying ProblemInnovation Has Created Complexity
Information Overload• Too many devices• Anywhere/anytime
Technology Limits• No Collaboration• Limited access
What Users Really Want
Information Control• Where I am• When I want
Technology Solutions• Devices that work together• Simple access to services
The Challenge !!!
How to Increase System Collaboration !!!
The Challenge !!!
• Collaboration between Radio in different frequency
• Collaboration Radio to IP Phones• Collaboration Radio to PSTN Phones• Collaboration Radio to Mobile Phones • Collaboration Radio to Mobile Devices
(Notebook)• Collaboration Radio to other devices in different
geographic area !!!
