Orchestration and Management Software

There are multiple management solutions targeted toward different use cases. Partners and end customers also

have the option of using their own management solutions that can interact with underlying components with well-

known protocols and documented APIs.

Cisco Enterprise Service Automation (ESA) is targeted toward enterprises and IT organizations that like to self-

manage their infrastructure. Cisco ESA aids with orchestration, automation of processes, & service chaining of

virtual and physical branches, thereby drastically reducing the time taken to provision multiple branches

simultaneously from months to just minutes. ESA along with Application Policy Infrastructure Controller Enterprise

Module (APIC EM) and Cisco Prime® Infrastructure allows designing, provisioning, managing, & monitoring of

hardware, the hosting platforms, as well as software services required for successfully getting a new branch up and

running. For more information, see the Cisco ESA Data Sheet

controller-enterprise-module/datasheet-c78-736830.html).

Cisco Virtual Managed Services (VMS) is a cloud native solution for service providers to automate, innovate, and

accelerate SD-WAN services to their business customers. Cisco’s VMS and service packages deliver a turnkey

solution that allows network operators to rapidly and cost-effectively deliver new services to business customers. It

includes a suite of service-level packages, such as SD-WAN and vBranch, and provides an open architecture for

easy integration into existing systems. These service packages can be customized and new ones created using

the VMS Software Development Kit. For more information, see the Cisco VMS Data Sheet

services/datasheet-c78-738671.html).

Cisco Network Services Orchestrator (NSO) enabled by the Tail-f® platform is an industry-leading orchestration

platform for hybrid networks and is targeted toward managed-service providers. It is a multitenent, automatable,

and highly scalable solution that provides comprehensive lifecycle service automation to enable you to design and

deliver high-quality services faster and more easily. For more information, see the Cisco Network Services

Orchestrator Data Sheet (https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/cloud-systems-management/network-

Ordering for Cisco 4000 Series ISR & Cisco UCS E-Series

To order Enterprise NFV with ISR 4000 Series & UCS E-Series follow the standard ISR and UCS E-Series

ordering guide. ISR 4000 Series and UCS E-Series is sold through perpetual licenses, and the router (ISRv)

entitlement is always included with the underlying ISR platform. Thus, the only component that is required is the

license for NFVIS (Operating system or virtualization layer) which is installed on the UCS E-Series blade server.

This is covered in more detail in the UCS E-Series section.

Ordering for Cisco 5000 ENCS and Cisco UCS C-Series

The Enterprise NFV solution is ordered through the Cisco ONE term-based subscription licenses that may be

purchased with 1-, 3-, or 5-year durations. At the time of ordering, you may choose a software subscription start

date that is independent of the hardware ship date.

The top-level part numbers to use in ordering the solution are shown in Table 3.

Hardware Platform Choices and Sizing

Table 4 describes the various hardware options available for the Enterprise NFV solution for deployment at the

branches or remote sites. The hardware platform requirements must be derived from the software components that

it hosts. Its resources must not only exceed the sum of the individual VNF requirements, but also leave room for

future growth. While each hardware platform is unique in its own way, each of them has three basic common

resources – CPU cores, memory, and disk capacity – that must be individually considered.

The ordering tool does not verify the VNF requirements at this time. For the purposes of sizing in this document,

the terms “core”, “vCPU”, and “physical CPU core” are considered equivalent.

Table 10 lists the basic requirements of the solution components.

Table 10. Minimum Resource Requirements of Solution Components

Item vCPUs RAM Disk Notes

NFVIS 1 4 GB 10 GB Mandatory. Runs bare metal on the hardware

ISRv 2 4 GB 8 MB Mandatory, except for UCS E-Series deployments

vWAAS-150 1 4 GB 200 GB

For more version- and scale-specific resource guidance, consult the data sheets of the individual VNFs.

Cisco UCS E-Series

The Enterprise NFV solution may be implemented with a combination of Cisco 4000 Series Integrated Services

Routers (ISRs) and Cisco UCS E-Series modules. In this hybrid model, the ISR platform plays the role of a

traditional router, and the Cisco UCS E-Series module hosts all other Virtual Network Functions (VNF) using NFV

Infrastructure Software as the base operating system. This model is suitable, but not limited, for the following

situations:

● Brownfield deployments when there is already a traditional ISR in place and there is a need to augment it

with more compute resources

● When a dedicated ISR is required for performance or port density requirements, especially on the Cisco

4400 Series ISR

● When there are resiliency benefits in distributing the workload across two different systems in a single

chassis instead of using a single hosting platform

Table 11 shows the various combinations of supported Cisco ISR and Cisco UCS E-Series servers.

There are no specific disk or memory requirements on the Cisco UCS E-Series to run Enterprise NFV, as long as

the Cisco UCS E-Series module exceeds the combined CPU, RAM, and disk requirements of each VNF.

Follow the Cisco 4000 Series ordering guide (https://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/products/collateral/routers/4000-

series-integrated-services-routers-isr/guide-c07-732797.html) and the Cisco UCS E-Series ordering guide

Cisco 5000 Series Enterprise Network Compute System

The Cisco 5000 Series Enterprise Network Compute System is a high-performance platform that brings enterprise-

grade NFV to the modern branch IT infrastructure. The Enterprise Network Compute System is a hybrid appliance

that takes the key attributes of a traditional router and a traditional server, and delivers a flexible compute element

that can host a software-defined environment. The systems have been designed to host not just traditional network

functions, but also desktop and server applications. The Enterprise Network Compute System can help significantly

cut down the IT equipment that needs to be serviced and maintained.

The 5000 Series consists of two product lines:

● 5400: 1-rack-unit platforms with 6 to 12 CPU cores, with built-in Layer 2 switch, traditional WAN interfaces,

and integrated lights out management

● 5100: Compact desktop form factor with a 4-core CPU

You can order a system under the top-level multiline bundle C1-NFVBRANCH-MLB. As part of the order, you also

need to select a Cisco ONE term license that is attached to the hardware platform. You will also have an

opportunity to select the software that is preloaded on the platform.

At this time, the Enterprise Network Compute System cannot be purchased without a Cisco ONE software license.

ENCS5406/K9 Cisco 5406 (6-core, 1.9 GHz Intel, 16 GB DRAM)

Cisco 5400 Enterprise Network Compute System platforms have built-in lights-out server management through the

Cisco Integrated Management Controller, which runs on the same dedicated baseboard management controller

hardware found in all Cisco UCS products. This feature provides standalone management consistency with Cisco

UCS C-Series rack servers for both local and remote server monitoring and configuration management. Integrated

Management Controller includes nonconfigurable 8-GB eMMC flash storage, of which a portion is dedicated for

disaster recovery software images.

Right after the platform selection, the user must select the mandatory and optional software components. These

choices are described in the “Ordering Preloaded Enterprise NFV Software” section.

System Memory (DRAM)

Cisco 5400 Enterprise Network Compute System platforms contain two Dual In-Line Memory Module (DIMM) slots.

The default configuration ships with a single 16-GB DIMM in the primary slot. The platform supports a maximum of

64 GB RAM. When upgrading memory to higher densities, both memory slots must be populated with DIMMs of

the same type and density for best performance. Using DIMMs of different sizes is a supported configuration.

The memory type and part numbers are listed in Table 15.

Motherboard M.2 SATA Storage Slot

Enterprise Network Compute System platforms contain an M.2 SATA storage slot on the motherboard, which

requires a minimum 64 GB SSD. It can be upgraded to higher capacities. This storage is the primary one on the

platform. NFV Infrastructure Software is installed on this disk. The NFV Infrastructure Software installation takes up

a portion of this disk; the rest is exposed as a data store to host VNFs. See the NFV Infrastructure Software data

sheet for specific storage requirements.

These disks are field-replaceable, but require the user to power down the system completely, opening the chassis

cover, and accessing the motherboard. For instructions, refer to the Enterprise Network Compute System

hardware installation guide.

Small-Form-Factor Disks

Enterprise Network Compute System platforms also contain two Small-Form-Factor (SFF) disk bays, which can be

configured with a variety of SATA, SAS, and SSD options. These disk bays are externally accessible, and disks

may be replaced and upgraded much more easily without powering down the system completely, unlike the

motherboard M.2 SATA slot. One or two disks may be chosen at the time of ordering, along with a choice of RAID

0 and 1. Although disks of different capacities are supported, the ordering rules enforce choosing the same disk

type.

By default, the platform uses software RAID, which supports the SATA and SSD disk options. An optional

hardware RAID module may be selected for higher performance; it supports all the disk options, including SAS

drives.

The SFF disk and option part numbers are listed in Tables 17, 18, and 19.
