• “To satisfy world energy demand in 2030, production must increase 82%.” Energy Information Administration, U.S. Dept. of Energy, 2007 • World energy demand will double by 2030.” Mark Ellis , International Energy

Agency, March 2007

• “World CO2 emissions are projected to rise from 28.1B metric tons in 2005 to 42.3B metric tons in 2030.” Energy Information Administration

• “Commercial buildings are third- fastest growing CO2 emissions source.” IEA, Emissions by Sector

Increasing Environmental Concerns

Can You Imagine ?

Energy Savings• 15.4W x 5,000 off hrs x (5,000 IP phones + 500 APs) = 423,500kW savings

per year

Cost Savings• 15.4W x 5,000 off hrs x $.12/kWhr x (5,000 IP phones + 500 APs) =

$50,820 savings per year

Green House Gas Savings• kW savings per year x 0.15 kgCO2e/kWh x EB1 = 194,024 trees saved per

year 12,498 mid-size automobile annual emissions removed

Cisco EnergyWise Operating System

• Cisco EnergyWise is a new energy management architecture that focuses on reducing power consumption on all devices connected to the Cisco network.

• These range from Power over Ethernet (POE) devices such as IP telephony, high speed internet, VPN, audio and video conferencing to Non IP building services and technologies such as lighting, elevators, energy and HVAC sensors

The Operating Cycle MONITOR – Measure Power. EnergyWise uses an exclusive domain-naming system to query information from a set of devices.

OPTIMIZE- Correlate Power and Set Actions. Cisco EnergyWise has the ability to apply time policies to control the power consumed. These policies can be implemented by device type, device location, priority of the device, and other parameters

ADVISE- Show Power and Cost Savings . EnergyWise’s query mechanisms can advise users of power consumption or a recommended change in power consumption within a building.

REGULATE – Policies. The user has the ability to verify and change Cisco EnergyWise policies over time to make sure the power-saving goals for the enterprise are being achieved

Optimizing Hotel Usage EnergyWise Notified Guest Arrives

Policy Added and Distributed to Network

Identify Room Phones, AP, Building HVAC and Lights

Room Power Up

• Phones Power Up• Wireless Coverage Assured• Room Temperature Set

• Lights On

•Hotels could power off or apply sleep modes when their rooms are vacant to devices such as temperature, phones and light. This would reduce $400 annually, per hotel room.

• A 200 room hotel could save more than $80,000 each

•If EnergyWise would be used to power down all IP phones of all companies for half of the day (7PM-7AM), the collective savings would be equivalent to energy consumed by 72,431 homes. That equates to 800 MW electricity, 95,327 acres of forest saved and the elimination of 199,732 lbs of coal to be burned.
