What is the IDoW?

It is work reserved to be done by only persons registered with any of the six Built Environment Professional Councils(BEPCs).

Once the IDoW has been finalised, the legislation governing the BE professional councils (BEPCs) envisages registrationwith the relevant professional council to be mandatory in order to practice as a professional in a particular builtenvironment profession.

After a process of consultation with stakeholders within their professions; five of the six built environment ProfessionalCouncils (excluding the Engineering Council of South Africa, (ECSA)); submitted IDoW to the CBE for finalisation.

Legislation requires the CBE to consult with the Competition Commission before finalisation of the identification of work. The Competition Commission views the IDoW as potentially in contravention of the provision of the Competition Act, 89 of1998 as amended.

As such, the CBE has submitted applications for exemption for the five professions to the Competition Commission. Therecommended identified Scope of Work for each of the five BEPCs can be downloaded from the CBE’s website(www.cbe.org.za). ECSA is finalising its recommendations on the scope of engineering work to be identified forconsideration by the CBE. This will also be followed by an Application for Exemption to the Competition Commission.

Popular Science reports that "...Computer algorithms designed the 3.2-meter-tall, 16-square-meter room, which has a whopping 260 million (!) surfaces. And instead of being made of plastic (3-D printing's go-to material), it's printed from sand."
