Magpie Studio has a simple approach: “listen to our clients; understand their audience; solve their problems.”Learning that it’s easier to make yourself understood when you speak in black and white. It helps to move beyond the grey areas and deliver a message loud and clear (or quiet and clear, if the brief requires). But there’s more to it than that. They’re avid collectors of all things visual. Passionate about creative colour – the bright idea that catches the eye, connects with an audience and makes a message memorable.

Magpie Studio speaks in black and white, but thinks in colour

Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the countries Vokalia and Consonantia, there live the blind texts. Separated they live in Bookmarksgrove right at the coast of the Semantics, a large language ocean. A small river named Duden flows by their place and supplies it with the necessary regelialia.

It is a paradisematic country, in which roasted parts of sentences fly into your mouth. Even the all-powerful Pointing has no control about the blind texts it is an almost unorthographic life One day however a small line of blind text by the name of Lorem Ipsum decided to leave for the far World of Grammar. The Big Oxmox advised her not to do so, because there were thousands of bad Commas, wild Question Marks and devious Semikoli, but the Little Blind Text didn’t listen.

She packed her seven versalia, put her initial into the belt and made herself on the way. When she reached the first hills of the Italic Mountains, she had a last view back on the skyline of her hometown Bookmarksgrove, the headline of Alphabet

The European languages are members of the same family. Their separate existence is a myth. For science, music, sport, etc, Europe uses the same vocabulary. The languages only differ in their grammar.

Village and the subline of her own road, the Line Lane. Pityful a rethoric question ran over her cheek, then she continued her way. On her way she met a copy.

The copy warned the Little Blind Text, that where it came from it would have been rewritten a thousand times and everything that was left from its origin would be the word "and" and the Little Blind Text should turn around and return to its own, safe country. But nothing the copy said could convince her and so it didn’t take long until a few insidious Copy Writers ambushed her, made her drunk with Longe and Parole and dragged her into their agency, where they abused her for their projects again and again. And if she hasn’t been rewritten, then they are still using her. Far far away, behind the word mountains, far from the countries Vokalia and Consonantia, there live the blind texts. University of the Arts London needed a memorable and positive identity for an exhibition showcasing projects that encourage wider participation in the arts. We created the name High Rise to communicate both the urban location of participants, as well as their level of achievement, and added a typographic twist to the logo to create a feeling of rising up. The theme continues through the print and exhibition graphics where all information and imagery floats to the top of the page.

portfolio advice dayPortfolio Advice Day is an initiative developed by University of the Arts London and Tate Britain offering guidance to potential students of the arts. Aimed at young people whose parents didn't attend university, the day showcases creative disciplines and helps students put together an effective collection of their work. Our identity makes the most of the portfolio angle, placing all the essential information in both a mini portfolio brochure and a virtual portfolio online.

“The sun shines out of my Arts”

Creative Summer University is a course organised by University of the Arts London. It allows young people with an interest in creativity to experience life as an art and design student and gain practical advice from industry specialists.

We devised a Sun icon, cropped into a 'C' monogram, that radiates across the applications in fluorescent inks. To create a crafted, layered aesthetic, cardboard moquettes of students and summertime objects were photographed and overprinted. Iconic landmarks from north and south of the river helped to differentiate between the course's two centres.

Paper manufacturer Robert Horne were keen to catch the eye of the creative industries with the launch of their latest paper, Imagine.

True to the paper's name, we wanted to create a promotional campaign that would fire the imagination of a design-savvy audience - to suggest that with imagination, anything is possible.

We paired evocative thoughts on the nature of creativity with seemingly impossible illustrations to create a set of posters that would inspire and engage.

“You don’t get harmony, if everyone sings the same note.” -Steve Honey

“The way I see it, if you want the rainbow, you gotta put up with the rain.”

-Dolly Parton

Imagine the PossibilitiesA series of illuminating thoughts from Robert Horne on Imagine Paper.

Logica: Food for Thought campaign

The Logica 'Food for Thought' lectures are lunchtime discussion sessions designed to inspire clients. We initially worked with Logica to name the series, then developed an identity for promotional material that used a thought bubble fruit sticker to capture the concept. The packed lunch theme continues across a range of postcards combining illustrations of lunchtime snacks with business charts and graphs.

“By 2011, the average age of the UK population will exceed 40 for the first time”

Knight Frank TangramsThe Buying Solution are the buying arm of leading estate agent Knight Frank. They quite literally solve

their clients house buying problems - covering everything from finding the property and negotiating the price to moving them in. Knight Frank wanted to create a strong press ad campaign to put The Buying Solution front of mind. Our approach was to communicate their creative problem solving through use of a tangram puzzle. Employing a model maker to create a beautiful oak brainteaser, we art directed a shoot with a range of iconic shapes used to express the many strengths and virtues of their service.
