It is safe to say that midterms are the bane of my existence and that Sallie Mae needs to stop emailing me that they are ready to help me. There is nothing scarier than student loans, to be honest. Now that I think about it, that should have been my Halloween costume this year. #FAFSAReminderEmails.

Since the leaves are changing colors, it must be the perfect time to finally fall into service. The weather is a little colder – borderline freezing in some areas (Am I right, Western Division?), but that never stops a Circle K member from giving back to others! Whether you are raking leaves for local businesses or communities or simply hosting a canned food drive, you are doing amazing things. Never forget how much on an impact each of you makes daily.

This issue of Circling the Empire is going to highlight some of the precious moments our district has had during October. You can read about THREE divisional meetings that took place all over our district (Shout out to Iroquois, Long Island, and Seneca Division) and how various Circle K members made a difference in Buffalo, New York! On top of that, you have the opportunity to learn more about the benefits of paying your dues, improving your resume, and find out more information about future events, such as Kiwanis Family Month and Prematurity Awareness Month!

Hopefully, you enjoy this month’s issue. Please, do not hesitate to contact me about anything! If you are interested in writing an article or promoting an event in Circling the Empire, let me know!

As college students, we are required to complete the dreadful task known as successfully developing a resume. You do not want to be that student that shows up to the Career Fair

without at least fifteen copies of your flawless resume in hand. When you are creating, updating, and finalizing the piece of paper that determines your future, go over these tips!

1. CONTACT INFORMATIONo Your name is always at the top of your resume. Centered at the top of the page should

be your full name, mailing address, phone number, and email address. How else willyou know if you get an interview?

2. EDUCATIONo When in doubt, place your education before your experience. If you are majoring in

law or medicine or have/are pursuing an advanced degree (Master’s or PhD), youdefinitely want employers to see that right away.

3. FIRST PERSONo Avoid writing anything in third person. For example, if your name is Mr. Smith, do not

put “Mr. Smith developed…” #notcute4. BULLET POINTS

o Under each experience, you should have at least two bullets further explaining yourposition at said location. Each bullet point should answer two out of these threequestions:

i. What did you do and/or accomplish?ii. How often did you do this (daily, weekly, etc.)?iii. Why is this important?

o Power and actions words are your best friends. Utilize words that will catch thereader’s eye. A person, on average, reads a resume for no more than two minutes. This gives you roughly thirty seconds to grab their attention. Use every second to thebest of your ability!

5. ONE PAGEo While it is mostly acceptable to have a two-page resume, please try your hardest to

stick with one page. Sometimes, not everything you have listed is relevant to theposition you are applying for. Feel free to delete the experience that does not relate tothe job you want.

6. PROFESSIONALISMo Stick with fonts, such as Arial or Times New Roman, for your resume. These fonts are

the easiest to read, especially if scanned.

1. You can receive service hours from attending your club’s eventsand service projects.

2. If you want to, you can run for a club officer position.3. Become a part of the Member Benefits Program, which includes a

pin, personalized membership card, and a handbook.4. Club officer positions not cutting it anymore? You can move on up

and run for a District Officer position!5. Speaking of the district, you have complete access to registration

all of our district-wide events, including District Large ScaleService Project (DLSSP), New York Speaking (NYS), and DistrictConvention (DCON).

6. You have the amazing opportunity not only to interact with, butalso to network with Kiwanians throughout the district.

7. Honey, you can even branch out and run for an InternationalOfficer position! #leadership

8. Do you like feeling insured? Well, dues-paying members areinsured at all Circle K International events!

9. How do you feel about scholarships? You can apply for variousscholarships to help finance your education.

10. Finally, you will be officially a part of the world’s largeststudent-led collegiate volunteer organization!

Edward Kroll held the first Circle K divisional of the service year for the Iroquois Division. We were all given a chance to meet some new people, while enjoying some pizza. Ed gave a great presentation on what it means to be in Circle K and of all the opportunities it presents. Many of our new members were in attendance and I feel that they learned a lot about what Circle K can do for them.

After the presentation, we made coloring books for the Upstate Golisano Children’s Hospital while listening to some music and watching fun Circle K videos. Incorporating a service project into this divisional was a great touch because it got everyone talking to each other and enjoying themselves. Everyone, including myself, had a great time making the coloring books together and I believe the experience reflected exactly what Circle K is about. I think I speak for everyone who attended when I say I can’t wait for the next divisional!

DIVISIONALS

When I first walked into the room, I saw a lot of strangers sitting at a table, ready to talk about Circle K. I used to go to these all the time when I was a part of Key Club; I wasn’t sure if it was going to be different or similar. I am a sophomore in college, so it’s been a while since I attended a divisional and while I was nervous, I was also extremely excited to jump back into my Kiwanis roots again.

The divisional I attended was energetic and full of a lot of positive energy. Lieutenant Governor Edgar Hu introduced himself and told us about Circle K events he attended and how this was his first time hosting a divisional. Then, we played a fun icebreaker called Giants, Wizards, and Elves. It was a real life combination of tag and rock, paper, scissors. Afterwards, we all sat down, went over club progress, and were introduced to a newly charted Circle K club at Molloy College.

Before we left, Edgar wanted us to make signs about what we wanted to accomplish in Circle K; we took individual and group photos of us holding our signs. Overall, I had so much fun at I can’t wait until our November divisional to just cool down, relax, and have fun with other college students. Being part of Kiwanis has shown me how to be kind and responsible, but being part of Circle K has helped me make friends and join together to make a change!

On October 25th, the Seneca Division was able to hold its first divisional meeting for the 2015 – 2016 service year at Rochester Institute of Technology. About 20 members showed up, representing three clubs, and together we talked about what was happening in the area and what the district had planned moving forward. Kiwanis Lieutenant Governor Anne Kelly was able to attend and she was very inspired by both the work that the Circle K clubs were doing and also by how much each club was working alongside their sponsoring Kiwanis clubs.

We held a service project to benefit the Family Advocacy Program. We created "Thrive Posters", posters that will be hung up in the office of the program to inspire the youth victims of sexual assault who visit to have the ability to not only survive after such trauma, but also to thrive on and accomplish great things. Members left the divisional enjoying the chance to get to hear from other clubs and feeling more motivated to be a bigger part of the division for the rest of the service year.

CLUB SPOTLIGHT New York University

Members of New York University (NYU) truly

showed their school pride at this year’s District Large Scale Service

Project (DLSSP)!

From being some of the most dedicated

volunteers at the event to choreographing an

adorable routine for the fashion show, NYU strutted their stuff.

They impressed the

district so much that they even won the Spirit Bear,

who will be theirs until New York Speaking. You guys are amazing and such an inspiration! 16

A DAY OF SERVICE

S e r v i c e . L e a d e r s h i p . F e l l o w s h i p .

On October 3rd, I had the opportunity to participate in the Second Annual Buffalo International Day of Service. I am a part of Niagara University Circle K and was joined by three of my fellow club members for that day. The four of us met up at University of Buffalo (UB) with a bunch of students from UB Circle K and were split up into groups consisting of 10-20 people. Each group was then given community service projects around the area, including a Soup Kitchen, Habitat for Humanity, and a few local buildings. The group I was in handled the task of painting the walls of a recently purchased photo center a few miles from the campus. The family of the previous president of UB Circle K, who graduated in last spring, bought the photo center.

While I was painting a 20 foot wall along the inside of the building, I was joined by plenty of Circle K members from other colleges across the state, including Binghamton University, Buffalo State College, New York University, Syracuse University, and the University of Rochester. Many of these students are friends I had made previously at the District Large Scale Service Project (DLSSP), a large-scale Kiwanis-sponsored service project in Taberg, NY. All in all, I greatly enjoyed volunteering my time to something that will benefit those who need it, and will definitely be coming back next year!
