IntroductionWe all like pirates. There are few archetypesthat bring up such vivid images. We want toplay them as player characters in our roleplay-ing sessions, and if it’s at all possible, using theUnisystem rules. Unfortunately, Arrr, Thar BeZombies, the pirate supplement for All FleshMust Be Eaten isn’t out yet. (Heck, it isn’t offi-cially announced yet.)This small booklet is intended to allow you toplay a pirate-based campaign with the Cinemat-ic Unisystem rules as your core. These can befound in the Buffy: The Vampire Slayer Role-playing Game Core Rulebook and the AngelRoleplaying Game Core Rulebook, both pub-lished by Eden Studios. You need one of thebooks to make full use of this supplement.

Page referencesI may refer to books in the Buffy RPG line. Thisis done by some letters, followed by a number. The number is the page reference, the letters re-fer to:BCR: Buffy: The Vampire Slayer Core Rule-bookSHB: Slayers HandbookMS: Monster SmackdownUnfortunately, I can’t help you with referencesto the Angel books. If anybody can provide mewith those, I would be most grateful.

FictionWhen we think of pirates, we think of dashingheroes, swashbuckling rogues with a heart ofgold. Wooden leg, parrot perched on a shoul-der, a rolling ‘r’. We think of Long John Silver,Blackbeard, or, lately, Jack Sparrow. Few ofthese images are (completely) historically accu-rate, whatever that means. Pirates were crimi-nals, and most of them did what they did notbecause it was such great fun or out of somesort of nobility.

Bah! While it’s good to know about the roots ofour archetypes, let’s not spoil our enjoyment offiction by such a tiny thing as fact. The stuff inthis document has its roots in history, but is ro-manticized and made more cinematic.

CharactersCharacters can be White Hats, Heroes and Ex-perienced Heroes. White Hats may be a bitweak and could need faster Drama Points re-plenishment than usual. Keep an eye on that.

SkillsThe biggest change in the rules is the skill list. Some of the skills in the Buffy book are too fo-cused on modern times (ever seen a pirate witha computer?) and are dropped. Other skills areslightly modified or flavoured-up. Finally, thereare those that are just renamed. Hah, a good pi-rate is lazy when he can.The final skill list is asfollows:• Art• Athletics (renamed and adapted from Acro-

batics)• Bargain (new)• Brawling (renamed from Kung Fu)• Crafts (new)• Crime• Doctor• Flintlock Fu (renamed and adapted from

Gun Fu)• Getting Nautical (new)• Influence• Knowledge• Languages• Notice• Occultism• Riding (new)• Survival (new)• Swashbuckling (renamed from Getting Me-

dieval)• Wild Card

AthleticsThis skill covers everything under Acrobaticsand has two additional uses that are worth men-tioning in this genre: swimming and diving!USING THE SKILL: Mostly, this would require aConstitution + Athletics roll. Wearing lots ofclothes makes it harder and results in a -2 (nor-mal clothes) to -5 (wearing some kind of ar-mour) penalty.

BargainThis skill comprises a wide range of mercantileabilities. You know how to haggle and how todrive a bargain. You can accurately appraise allsorts of goods, from cotton to jewelry, fromspices to a horse. You know what goods arewanted at what market. Useful skill for a mer-chant, but also for a quartermaster.USING THE SKILL: Bargain and Intelligence toknow which commodity is wanted where. Bar-gain combined with Perception to estimate thetrue value of something. To haggle or make adeal, use Bargain plus Willpower.

CraftsYou are adept at working with your hands. If itdoesn’t exist, you can make it — provided youhave the proper tools and components. If it’sbroken, you can mend it: either permanently oftemporarily. The latter is easier and quicker, butwhat you mended may fail you at the most in-opportune moment. This is the skill you need tobe a ship carpenter, a blacksmith, a boyer or ajewelcutter.USING THE SKILL: Often this comes down to aDexterity plus Crafts roll. Intelligence plusCraft may let you reverse-engineer a device orconstruction. Jury-rigging something gives youa bonus on your roll (+5 at most). Lackingproper tools gives you penalties (“where did Ileave my hammer?”) or renders the task im-possible (lacking a forge).

Flintlock FuYou can handle all kinds of black powderweapons like muskets and pistols. You alsoknow how to treat gunpowder, flint and otherelements of the guns. What’s more, you canload, aim and fire cannon without blowingyourself to bits.

Getting NauticalYou know your way around a boat— erhm, ship. You know which line to pull, what a be-laying pin belays, and how to tar a deck. What’smore, you can read maps an perhaps even nav-igate by the stars!USING THE SKILL: Perception and Getting Naut-ical to see whether everthings in its place. Intel-ligence and Getting Nautical to use charts andto navigate. Dexterity and Getting Nautical tosplice a rope or tie a knot.

RidingThis skill covers riding a horse, but also hand-ling of a horse-and-carriage and, if you can findit, a chariot.USING THE SKILL: Roll Dexterity plus Riding tostay in the saddle. Willpower and Riding couldbe combined to tame a stubborn stallion. To as-sess the health of your mount, use Riding andPerception.

SurvivalLiving from the land you can survive far fromthe ‘civilized world’ without the proper tools.Marooned on an island, you make your ownfire, and a raft from sea turtles, bound togetherwith the hair from your back. Robinson Crusoesure had high marks in this one.USING THE SKILL: Dexterity and Survival to settraps or make a fire. Constitution + Survival toget through that desert or the wilds of Jamaica.Use this skill with Perception to notice thetracks of a wild boar.

Qualities & DrawbacksOf course, not all the Qualities and Drawbacksfrom Buffy are appropriate in the Golden Age ofSail. Some, like Robot, are right out. Some arejust renamed. Yet other Qualities and Draw-backs are added.

Renamed QualitiesJock → Natural AthleteNerd → ScholarPhotographic Memory → Total Recall

New Qualities & Drawbacks:

Animal Companion (1- or 2-point Quality)Your character is a walking cliché with thatparrot on her shoulder. You’ve befriended a small exotic animal. It’squite the bargain — you take care of it, and inturn it makes you look all pirate-y.The one-point version of this Quality doesn’toffer you much beyond looking cool. Of course, sometimes that’s all it takes. Although youdon’t understand what your companion is tryingto communicate, you can always pretend thatyou do!At two points, you’ve developed an empathicbond of sorts with your pet. You understand itsbasic emotions (for example, when it’s trying towarn you) and it understands simple commandslike “bring me that key.”

Gunner (2-point Quality)Your character has spent long, arduous hourstraining reloading her firearms. While reload-ing, subtract 4 rounds from the reloading time. This Quality cannot reduce the time needed be-low one round.Example: Dave the gunner’s mate is reloading amusket. Normally, that would take 12 rounds. He has Flintlock Fu 3 and Dex 3, and rolls a 8.Combined, that is 14, which is 3 SuccessLevels. This reduces the time needed for re-loading to 9 rounds. Dave also has the Gunner

Page 6: Cinematic Unisystem: Pirates! - Sandcatjake/games/unisystem/unisystem-pirates.pdf · Characters Characters can be White Hats, Heroes and Ex-perienced Heroes. White Hats may be a bit

Quality, which nets him another 4 rounds. Re-loading this musket takes him 5 rounds: still aconsiderable time, but certainly faster than auntrained person.

Hook(2-point Drawback)One of your hands is gone — cut off in combat, amputated or lost in an accident. In its stead, you got a mean, hard-iron hook. You get a -4 penalty to every Dexterity roll in-volving your hook. On the other hand (bad pun!bad pun!) you now have a weapon with you atall times. To hit somebody, roll Dexterity +Brawling or Dexterity + Swashbuckling. Youdo 2 × Strength Slash/stab damage. And maybe somebody will make a movie aboutyou, hey?

Impressive Scar(2-point Quality)Wow, that sure is a wicked scar. I don’t meanto pry, but relate the tale to the Director and theother characters, and I’ll grant a +2 on everyroll where you want to intimidate anyone.Note that you can combine this Quality withAttractiveness and get the best of both worlds.

Landlubber(2-point Drawback)Your character has the opposite of sea legs. Dueto seasickness and a strong aversion of anythingsea-related, she won’t perform nearly as well ifon a boat. Ship. Whatever.Every time you board a ship, and every timewhen you wake up aboard one, make a Will-power roll (not Doubled). If you fail, all youractions are at -2 for the rest of the day.

Larger Than Life(1-point/level Quality)Even for a Cast Member, your character hasdone extraordinary things, or so it’s said.Whether by design or due to external circum-stances, the tales of your deeds are the stuff oflegend. Your exploits are exaggerated and verynot true, but for the rest of the world, the fiction

is fact. Hey, given enough time and a bigenough ego to begin with, you may start to be-lieve the stories yourself! You are given wide berth in every harbour, andships surrender at the drop of your name, beforea single shot has been fired. Or, if your reputa-tion is more reputable, your are given a lot ofcredit at the inn, or maybe the innkeeper evengives you money to have you stay in his place.Members of the opposite sex are naturallydrawn to you, whether you appreciate it or not.On the other hand, there are always people outthere trying to earn a name as the one whobested you. If your reputation is that of a crim-inal and the authorities catch you, they will tryyou for the deeds done in your tales, not thoseyou actually perpetrated yourself.Add the level(s) of your character’s LargerThan Life to rolls if you want to get somethingdone. Oftentimes, this will be Influence Skillrolls. If you take this Quality, work out with the GMwhat your reputation is. Bonus points for writ-ing a few of your tales down!

Married To The Sea(2-point Quality)You need no wife, for you already have one.The sea may be fierce mistress, but she caresfor you and her actions are easier to predict thanany red-blooded woman’s. You can tell fromher whispers and her fair looks what’s she’sthinking and what she might do next. You get a +2 bonus to all Getting Nautical rollsand all Knowledge and Perception rollswhenever they involve the sea.

One Eye(1-point Quality)Fate took your eye, the bitch. Now you get towear a real cool eye patch. This gives you a +1bonus on all rolls (Influence, mostly) involvingintimidation.

Page 7: Cinematic Unisystem: Pirates! - Sandcatjake/games/unisystem/unisystem-pirates.pdf · Characters Characters can be White Hats, Heroes and Ex-perienced Heroes. White Hats may be a bit

Peg Leg(2-point Drawback)Your character lost one of his legs in the past. Itwas amputated — whether that was strictlyspeaking ‘necessary’ or not! All you got in itsstead was a wooden peg. Sometimes you couldswear you can still feel your feet — both ofthem.Hand-to-hand combat is hampered a bit, givingyou a -1 penalty. You can not move faster thanone-half normal speed.(This is the Physical Disability Drawback, withthe Missing Leg option. Yup.)

Slept With The Fishes(1-point Quality)Somewhere in the past, you nearly drowned.Through Fate, Faith, sheer Good Luck or thehefty expenditure of Drama Points, you gotthrough the experience alive. Poseidon left hismark on you, though. You have a slight blue-greenish sheen to your skin, or perhaps evensomething like scales at certain places. If you’ve got the Attractiveness Quality, it’s re-duced by one level. Attractiveness (+1) is ef-fectively removed. If you’ve got negative At-tractiveness it’s lowered even more, by onelevel. On he positive side, your tough skin providesyou with an Armor Value of 4 against blunttrauma. Its toughness doesn’t help againstSlash/Stab or Bullet damage, though.(This Quality is effectively Attractiveness (-1)and Natural Toughness rolled into one.)

EquipmentFlintlock pistolNotorious for its inaccuracy. Reloading tooksuch a long time that it was a matter of ‘fire andforget.’ Of course, nobody prevents you fromcarrying two pistols... Damage is 13 points(Bullet type). Reloading takes 12 turns, minusthe Success Levels of a Dexterity and FlintlockFu roll. Uses pistol ranges, with one additional-1 all over the board. So a shot from your trustypiece with the target up till five yards away(short range for pistols) takes a -1 penalty.

MusketCan’t be a musketeer without a musket, y’-know. These big guns are not very accurate (usepistol ranges) and reloading is a bear. Way backthen, most people carried a sword or knife orbayonet around, just in case. This puppy isavailable from the "Three Musketeers" era allthe way to the end of the Civil War (and stillavailable in the hands of collectors or war-reen-actment fans even after that). Damage is 17points (Bullet type). Reloading a musket takes12 turns, minus the Success Levels of a Dexter-ity and Gun Fu roll. (SHB, page 38.)
