A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away… a room full of musicians donned some wacky costumes and performed their favourite movie music.
It’s my absolute pleasure to welcome you to our annual CINEMATIC concert and tell you why this concert means so much to me. Music can create tension or joy and keep you on the edge of your seat, and films have an incredible way of weaving story and music together to keep your eyes glued to the screen. Many film composers use the full might of a symphony orchestra to make audiences feel something, but the film industry can’t be credited for inventing emotional, edge-of-your-seat music. Classical music has been manipulating your emotions for hundreds of years, long before the invention of cinema. So, if you love movie music, you love classical music! When someone says to me, “I don’t understand classical music,” I say, “Yes, you do - you just don’t know it yet!”
This year’s concert theme is Heroes and Heroines and as a horn player there are some fun horn features to look forward to. Many film scores give us a moment to shine - look out for us in the back left of the stage pumping out some heroic music from Star Wars, The Man From Snowy River and Gladiator. And they’re just some of the heroes! The heroines of our cinematic concert include powerhouse superhero Captain Marvel, Agatha Christie’s nosy Miss Marple and the inquisitive young Satsuki and Mei from My Neighbor Totoro. But what I’m most looking forward to is Ride of The Valkyries by Richard Wagner. While many think of Apocalypse Now, it’s hard not to also think of the true heroine of Wagner’s opera, The Ring Cycle, the intimidating Brünnhilde.
We hope you enjoy this spectacular show and look forward to seeing you at the next one!

WHO SITS WHEREOrchestras sit in sections based on types of instruments. There are four main sections in the symphony orchestra (strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion) and sometimes a keyboard section.
STRINGSThese instruments produce sound by bowing or plucking stretched strings.
First / Second ViolinViolaCelloDouble BassHarp
WOODWINDWind instruments produce sound by being blown into.
Flute / PiccoloClarinet / E-flat Clarinet / Bass ClarinetOboe / Cor AnglaisBassoon / Contrabassoon
BRASSBrass players create sound by vibrating their lips. When this vibration is pushed through large brass tubes, it can create significant noise.
French HornTrumpet Trombone / Bass TromboneTuba
PERCUSSIONThese instruments create sound by being struck or shaken. Some instruments just make a sound; others play particular pitches.
Timpani, Bass drum, Snare drum, Cymbals,Glockenspiel, Xylophone, Vibraphone, Tam-tam, Triangle, Sleigh Bells.
KEYBOARDKeyboard instruments are played by pressing keys.

LISTENING GUIDE
In this concert, Queensland Symphony Orchestra will take you on an epic journey diving into some of the most heroic and heartracing movie music. Read on to discover how these famous tunes came to be.
20th Century Fox Fanfare Alfred Newman (1900–1970)
Star Wars (Main Title) John Williams (b. 1932) In 1933, Hollywood composer Alfred Newman wrote a fanfare for the film company 20th Century Fox. It was the studio’s standard logo music for a couple of decades but gradually Fox used it less and less. Until in 1977 a film director named George Lucas decided he wanted to resurrect Newman’s fanfare for the opening of his new film Star Wars, which was itself meant to be a nostalgic throwback to old-fashioned swashbucklers – but set in space. Not only this, composer John Williams decided to write an opening melody that would also be a fanfare to match Newman’s music. That fanfare, now known as the Star Wars Main Title theme, has surely become the most iconic film music of all time. We can think of no better way to open this concert than with these two fanfares together.
Gladiator (Suite)Hans Zimmer (b. 1957)When Ridley Scott’s film of Gladiator burst on the scene, it caused a stir. While Roman epics had been popular in the classic Hollywood days of the 1950s, they were rare in the late 90s. Scott’s film turned that on its head, with a film that brought the Roman era to life in a new and contemporary way. Hans Zimmer (along with the astonishing singing of his Australian co-composer Lisa Gerrard) created a brand new sound for the film - a distinctive Eastern flavour with an emphasis on “wailing” vocals - which has since been copied many times by films wanting to sound exotic. However, he also threw in a couple of sneaky references to famous classical composers.
This suite (or collection) of music from Gladiator opens with a noble and majestic theme for the first shot of the Roman capital - and it draws on the majestic sound of German composer Richard Wagner. Then, as the music morphs into the opening battle sequence, Zimmer borrowed some key ideas from “Mars, the Bringer of War” from The Planets by Gustav Holst. However, there is plenty of Zimmer originality in here as well! You might also notice an early version of what later became The Pirates of the Caribbean theme as well as the beautiful “Earth” theme that closes this suite.
PROGRAM | CINEMATIC 7
The Imitation GameAlexandre Desplat (b. 1961)Morten Tyldum’s 2014 film The Imitation Game tells a story of a little known hero and heroine from World War II. Alan Turing (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) was a mathematician who assisted the British government during World War II. His job was to decode the Enigma machine, which the Nazis used to send coded messages to each other during the war. Abrasive and difficult though he was, Turing was a genius and was eventually able to crack the code - an act which eventually helped the Allies win the war.
Assisting him in this all-but-impossible task was Joan Clarke (played by Keira Knightley), a clerk who was brilliant enough to work with the cryptographer, but had to do so in secret so her parents didn’t find out. Sadly, neither character was ever publicly recognised for this in their lifetime both because of the secrecy of the work and because Turing was prosecuted later in his life as a gay man – which was still considered a criminal offence in the 1950s.
French composer Alexandre Desplat’s theme for the film sums up Turing and Clarke’s partnership perfectly - the mathematical precision of the code-cracking is captured in the endlessly repeating notes of the piano and keyboards, while the melody that sits on top of this repetition captures the poignancy of the tale.
Ride of the ValkyriesRichard Wagner (1813-1883)In the 1870s, composer Richard Wagner unleashed on the world a massive drama which was more or less The Lord of the Rings of its day - a 16 hour epic telling a tale of a ring of power and the gods and mortals that tried to wield it. Der Ring des Nibelungen (“The Ring of the Nibelung”) consists of four operas that audiences (ideally) watch over the course of one week. Operas were big back in the 1800s, but nothing had ever been done on this scale. The Ride of the Valkyries is one of the highlight moments of “The Ring of the Nibelung” and appears in the second opera, Die Walküre (“The Valkyrie”). The Valkyries of the story are a sisterhood of nine immortal warriors who ride flying horses over the battlefields of the world, taking heroic dead soldiers back to Valhalla.
The Ride perfectly captures these characters (even though it was a bit hard to get the flying horse bit to work back in the 1800s with no CGI!). You can hear the flapping of powerful wings in the strings and the mighty brass remind us of their warlike nature. This combination of flying and war is more than likely what attracted director Francis Ford Coppola to use this music in the iconic helicopter scene in the Vietnam War epic Apocalypse Now. But this is just one use of this famous piece - from Bugs Bunny to Watchmen, this music is everywhere and shows no signs of losing its popularity.

LISTENING GUIDE
The Avengers (Theme)Alan Silvestri (b. 1950)Alan Silvestri has composed soundtracks for over 100 films, many of them some of the most popular films of the last few decades (including Back to the Future). One of the features of film scores in recent years is the use of ostinato – a musical technique where short groups of notes are repeated over and over again. Silvestri’s theme from The Avengers is a great example of this – the string instruments strike up an insistent rhythm which echoes the driving action of the film, then the horns enter and raise the pulse even further. This string and brass combo has become as much a part of modern blockbuster cinema as superheroes themselves. Have a listen out for it next time you’re watching a Marvel film!
Captain Marvel (Open World Suite)Pinar Toprak (b. 1980)When Captain Marvel was announced as the twenty-first entry in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise, it was a landmark for featuring the first female superhero to get her own movie in the series. But Marvel didn’t just leave their main character as being the only heroine of the piece - they deliberately involved women in the production at all levels from writing to editing to directing. And in this case, composing the music. Turkish-American composer Pinar Toprak was so keen to be involved she hired a 70-piece orchestra to record her audition pitch for the soundtrack.
Toprak wanted to make the Captain Marvel theme instantly recognisable, and she achieved this by the distinctive leap between the first two notes of the theme (a minor 7th, if you know your music). Beyond that, Toprak's goal was simply to capture the hearts of the audience with the emotional power of the music. As she has said in interviews: “If you have their heart, you have them.”
PROGRAM | CINEMATIC 9
The Man From Snowy RiverBruce Rowland (b. 1942)Similarly to Pinar Toprak, Bruce Rowland was also keen to score a film - something he hadn’t done before. In his case, Rowland managed to persuade a friend to give him the script for the upcoming George Miller film The Man From Snowy River, based on the famous Australian poem of the same name. He read the script and loved it, but couldn’t come up with a musical idea that matched the story. Then in the middle of Winter at 3am, he came up with something. Rowland got up, sat down at his piano and recorded in one take “Jessica’s Theme”. That piano theme sold George Miller on working with Rowland (and also went on to be performed by many amateur pianists in Australia all through the 1980s!).
The other main piece of music for the film, much more orchestrally based, is what we’re hearing now - “The Man From Snowy River” theme, with its joyous French horn melody. The movie (and the poem) tells the story of a group of riders chasing down a runaway colt. In many ways, it is the Australian answer to the American Western, with its wide open spaces and mounted horsemen and Rowland has brilliantly created our own Australian version of that musical genre.
In The Hall of the Mountain King (from Peer Gynt Suite No.1, op.46)Edvard Grieg (1843–1907)Here’s another classical piece that has taken on a life of its own. Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg composed music for Henrik Ibsen’s stage drama Peer Gynt, based on a Norwegian fairy tale, however, over the years Grieg’s music has managed to become even more popular than the play itself. Amongst the many memorable musical tunes that Grieg composed for Peer Gynt, surely none has become as enormously popular as this short moment of brilliance “In The Hall of the Mountain King”. Representing the troll king and his minions, it starts with a quiet plucking sound (known as pizzicato) on the lower strings, which then builds up through the whole orchestra, getting more frenetic as it goes. It has been referenced in popular culture in many ways, from movies to advertisements, but its best version is the one you’re hearing today - live, in a concert hall, with an audience!

LISTENING GUIDE
Miss Marple (Theme)Ron Goodwin (1925–2003)Agatha Christie’s iconic detective Miss Marple is a heroine of a different type - over endless cups of tea in the village of St Mary Mead, the ageing spinster with the sharp mind is always able to point out the culprit in a variety of murder mysteries. Given her style, you could be forgiven for thinking that a movie version of Miss Marple might be rather slow and polite. But the first film incarnation of Miss Marple in the 1960s was anything but that. Played by the great English actress Margaret Rutherford in four films, this Miss Marple took a comedic approach to the detective which won over audiences. To emphasise the upbeat nature of the film series, composer Ron Goodwin created a very 60s-era theme for the sleuth, complete with funky harpsichord solos, but with references to English folk songs throughout.
Goodwin himself was a marvellous melodist, and became a household name in England for his film music - in much the same way as John Williams is known today. Sadly, because many of the films he composed for are less well known in our time, his music doesn’t get performed as often. We hope you enjoy his return to the stage.
The Sorcerer’s ApprenticePaul Dukas (1865–1935)Before there were film soundtracks, composers worked to see if they could create music that told a story in the listener’s heads. This was known as programmatic music. One of the most famous examples of this type of music is “The Sorcerer’s Apprentice” by French composer, Paul Dukas. Based on a poem by German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, it describes a sorcerer’s apprentice who tries some magic while his boss is out. He manages to bring a broom to life to carry water for him, but the hapless apprentice doesn’t know how to stop the broom once it gets going and chaos ensues. Not many people would be familiar with Goethe’s poem today, but millions know how this story goes because of Walt Disney’s imaginative segment in the movie Fantasia that featured Mickey Mouse as the apprentice. There are many great moments in this piece, but surely the most iconic is the music of the bassoon, representing the broom coming alive - shuffling at first, then heading into a relentless unstoppable march.

IF YOU LIKED... THE IMITATION GAMEYOU SHOULD TRY The music of Phillip Glass and John Adams. Both composers use a style called minimalism, which features musical repetition that grows in power like Desplat’s Imitation Game theme. Glass’ Violin Concerto or Adams’ Harmonielehre are great places to start if you want music with a cinematic sound.
IF YOU LIKED... THE MAN FROM SNOWY RIVERYOU SHOULD TRY The music of Jean Sibelius. Finland’s most famous composer, he also used the orchestra to describe the wide-open spaces of his country in the way Rowland does here. We recommend his Symphony No.5, which we are performing in June in our Epic Visions concert. (Start with the last movement – or section – of the symphony and be swept away.)
IF YOU LIKED... THE SORCERER’S APPRENTICEYOU SHOULD TRY Another composer who wrote great programmatic music was Richard Strauss. We are performing Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks in our September concert, Queensland’s Finest. Like The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, it tells the tale of a mischief-maker and is a great show-off piece for the full orchestra.
My Neighbor TotoroJoe Hisaishi (b. 1950)Like Alan Silvestri, Japanese composer Joe Hisaishi has created over 100 film scores himself, but he originally shot to worldwide fame when he teamed up with anime director Hayao Miyazaki in the 1980s. Hisaishi has written the score for nearly every one of Miyazaki’s films, created by the legendary Studio Ghibli. One of the earliest of these successes was the 1988 film My Neighbour Totoro, which tells of two little girls in post-war Japan who befriend a spirit named Totoro. The main theme from this film is classic Hisaishi - a combination of melancholy and joy which is unmistakable.
The Incredibles (Full Mayhem)Michael Giacchino (b. 1967), arr. McEwanThe first feature film that Michael Giacchino scored was The Incredibles and it put him on the map as a film composer. Because the film begins in the 60s, director Brad Bird originally wanted composer John Barry to work on the film and give it a jazzy sound, reminiscent of Barry’s work on James Bond films. Barry declined and Giacchino took over. The outcome was a triumph, and Giacchino managed to create a soundscape that captured the jazz orchestra vibe Bird was after, but also perfectly evoked the drive and energy of Pixar’s iconic superhero family.
