Industry: Employee Skills/TrainingAG5 helps safety and rescue-related organizations (e.g., firefighters and ambulances) to understand and to support theexperiences, roles and skills of their workforces. The solutioncovers administrative processes of education, training anddeployment for both individual experts and multidisciplinary

teams.

It is unique because of its ability to share organizational data andsupport inter-organizational processes; this being particularlyimportant for ensuring an adequate response to major incidents.

VisualWorks® helps AG5’s development team to be veryproductive in an ever-changing environment. AG5 is constantlygaining a clear competitive advantage over other vendors as theycan instantly adopt any new training methodology, increasedlegislation requirements or changed organizational structures andthus be able to quickly respond to new demand.

Industry: CommunicationsAGIS develops, sells and integrates modularly built standardsoftware (OPENService) for cable and internet providers as well asfor telecommunications companies. The software supports theentire range of business services for leading firms that bundle TV,Internet, telephony and similar services, including promotions, service provisioning, invoicing and customer payment.OPENService is the leading solution in Switzerland and ismarketed as well in Germany and Austria.

The software’s front end takes advantage of the objectorientation of ObjectStudio®. OPENService is scalable from smallsystems up to distributed solutions with hundreds of workstations and millions of invoices.

Industry: Software EngineeringThe French software development company, Bird Technology, focuses on developing applications based on domain-specificlanguages (DSL) for the finance sector as well as web 2.0 and web3.0 applications for niche markets (such as transactions andsimulations). The company's high-end services range fromconsulting, project planning and project management toapplication maintenance services.

Bird decided to use VisualWorks for its maturity, availability andhomogeneity, which is not reached by other object-orientedlanguages. In addition, Bird needed a dynamic languageproviding a just-in-time optimizer, while guaranteeing maximum

stability with effective support. Smalltalk met these requirements.

“Smalltalk enables us to break many technologicalconventions, for the sake of being the best."

Mathieu van Echtelt,Product Manager, AG5

“We appreciate Smalltalk’s clear objectorientation, along with its tremendous stability. The class browser and especially the ability tointegrate add-ons during runtime are importantassets. Smalltalk enables us to be very flexibleand immediately adapt to the latest marketrequirements.”

Leo Zgraggen, CEO, AGIS

“Smalltalk provides the perfect platform

for us to meet the high requirements of ourcustomers on DSL- and BNL-based applications.”

Christophe Allegrini,Director of Application Development,Bird Technology

Industry: Manufacturing/SystemsDevelopmentFinland-based MetaCase Consulting develops modelingsolutions that enable its customers to predict how business-process changes will affect information systems architecture.

When MetaCase needed to develop a new generation of metaCASE tools, it turned to VisualWorks for a powerful, flexible, object development environment.

As a result of this partnership, MetaCase Consulting producedMetaEdit+. This new software development tool enabled NokiaMobile Phones to reduce time-to-market for new telephonemodules from 14 days to 1, for example. According to MetaCaseConsulting, this outstanding achievement would not have beenpossible without the power, flexibility and simplicity of Smalltalk.

Industry: Manufacturing/EnergySystemsThe first company in the Netherlands dedicated toobjectoriented technology, Soops seized opportunities in theenergy exchange and power-trading markets. Success in theselucrative but competitive markets required speedy softwaredevelopment and the ability to replicate systems.

Soops found that VisualWorks was reliable, flexible, simple tolearn and use, and needed only 50 to 65 percent of the code

required of a C++/Java program. With Smalltalk, Soops rebuiltand replaced power exchange systems in less than 20 percent of the time their clients had estimated. Moreover, Soops’programmers reported 50 percent productivity gains andsignificant improvements in software reliability, reusability andscalability – all contributing to a 100 percent success rate thateven amazes Soops.

Industry: TelecommunicationsSteinmayr Net Intelligence provides custom software formanaging networks and infrastructure. Under a 1998 German law,the documentation of ICT networks must be traceable – achallenge similar to provisions of the U.S. Sarbanes-Oxley Actand to ISO requirements. Compliant companies want their ICTinfrastructure to be economical, justifiable and even profitable. Both SNI and its customers must customize systems for animplementation. SNI’s COBOL systems were redesigned withVisualWorks to meet market and customer demand forcomprehensive integration and fast implementation at low cost, plus anticipate new techniques (e.g., VoIP), cost pressure andmore complex networks. Smalltalk’s metaprogramming features

produce a generic framework for easier and faster modifications, without affecting SNI’s system functionality.

“Cincom Smalltalk allowed us to provide ourcustomers with a simple-to-use, adaptive andpowerful tool for effective support of modelingand method engineering.”

Dr. Steven Kelly (on the left), CTO,MetaCase Consulting

“Cincom Smalltalk was the only solution thatcould deliver the required level of malleabilityand flexibility for the highly complex projects thatwe were pursuing. So far, we’ve achieved a 100percent success rate with it.”

Freek Dech, Managing Director, Soops

“Our early decision for object-orientedtechnologies pays off. For several years, we havebeen growing faster than the market.”

Margit Steinmayr, CEO,Steinmayr Net Intelligence GmbH
