After their children were grown and out of the house, Ann and Vince Stamp were ready to shake things up a bit. They wanted to move to a new home and meet new people—all sorts of new people. Eventually the couple selected a house high on a hill in charming—and colorful—Columbia Tusculum. The Stamps found the mix they were looking for—this is a neighborhood that celebrates diversity. See for yourself in “Different Strokes” on page 38.

What we find particularly interesting is while many of their friends were downsizing, and moving to “practical” homes, the Stamps set sail in a differ-ent direction. Not only is their master suite not on the first floor, the couple climbs 25 steps between the garage and the bedroom. If they have guests, it’s 44 steps from the street up to the front door—although climbers are rewarded with a stunning view of the Ohio River and its surrounding hills.

No doubt, the Stamps surprised their friends and children with this decision. But as 78.2 million Baby Boomers begin to roll into their sixties, we are beginning to see the number of options concern-ing retirement living explode and the choices are not always conventional.

To get the discussion started, take a look at “Planning for Now or Later” on page 69 and join us—two Boomers our-selves—at Housetrends Cincinnati on Facebook. We’d love to hear from you!

Have fun looking,

Editor Karen Bradner, Publisher Linda Bacher and the rest of the Housetrends staff

I was looking for a good feel, a good mix of people with all different interests.

When Lana and Constantino (C.J.) Santavicca bought their home in the Indian

Springs subdivision five years ago, it had minimal landscaping. That’s the way

Lana wanted it. “I had a blank canvas!” Lana exclaims. * Lana’s plan was to

plant all of the things she loves and dreamed of when she was too busy working as a teacher

and raising a family to do much gardening. She began to design and plant, seeking out special

and often hard-to-find treasures. * Herbs and other useful plants are situated throughout the

landscape. “My first love is herbs,” says Lana, “so I have a lot of those. And a lot of the orna-

mental plants are used as herbs, too—like the roses.” * The landscape has a few themed

planting areas, including the culinary herb garden, the formal rose bed and a natural area

down by the creek. All of the edges of the property burst with colorful plantings. Connecting

them is a fragrant, lovely, lavender-lined path.

The lavender path “Lavender I absolutely love,” says Lana. A walk along the path, with the summer sun on your face, hands outstretched to brush the tips of the flow-ering spikes—this is a sen-sory experience evoking the Mediterranean.

This is by design. Lana and C.J. have traveled a lot in Italy and France. Lana has even

taken cooking lessons at Julia Child’s house. These experi-ences have influenced her gar-dening choices.

Not quite fully blooming in these photos, the lavender is the cultivar ‘Grosso’, chosen for its long flower stems and deep purple color. The path is accented with Skyrocket juni-pers. There are several varieties of thyme underfoot, including

landscape trends

coconut, caraway and creeping red thyme.

Lana used to treat the lav-ender plants as an annual, replanting each year. Then she realized that a hardy English lavender cultivar could over-winter if given the right condi-tions—very little soil, mostly sand and no watering. “It loves drought,” she explains.

The large stone steps

were set in place by Brian Shroeder from the Cincinnati Horticulture Group, LLC. All other stonework, and the overall design, was completed by Lana and C.J.

Roses and mixed bordersLana plants boldly, in swaths, using large numbers of her favorite plants. If she likes it,

she wants to see a lot of it, she claims. The landscape includes a formal rose garden as well as a long stretch of red Knock-Out roses.

“We’ve had a lot of Japanese beetles. I go into the formal rose garden about twice a day with a bucket of soapy water, and flick the beetles into the water. I sometimes use Neem oil (a natural insecticide) too.”

Around the roses are bloom-ing trees and shrubs like Prairiefire and Sugar Time blooming crabapples, eleven different kinds of lilacs, and a young ginko tree.

Throughout the garden, there are hydrangeas. “We have tons of different hydrangeas, and I enjoy every one of them!” Lana exclaims. Some favorites include Limelight, Pink Winky, and the lace-cap varieties.

Tucked in between the woody plants and perennials are some edible landscaping, including several basils, nine varieties of peppers, tomatoes, eggplant, and borage.

Lana planted some red and oakleaf lettuce, she says,

“But the neighborhood rab-bit thought it was in Mr. McGregor’s garden and chewed the lettuce to the ground!”

The roses in the herb garden are ‘Carefree Marvel’. Lana can attest to the fact that they real-ly are carefree. On the other hand, some David Austin roses on the gate require regular dis-ease control—but the beauti-ful show in spring makes them worth the effort.

The natural retreatFor a cool change, step through the rustic gate at the bottom of the hill that leads to a shady haven created by C.J. Next to the bank of a bur-bling brook, you will find a

hammock, picnic table and fire pit. Lana claims that it is always ten degrees cooler in this spot.

It took about two years for C.J. to clear out the overgrown underbrush in the area. Weeds and Japanese honeysuckle

landscape trends

were replaced with sour cherry and apple trees. A bit more clearing is in the works.

There is a little island, dubbed “Treasure Island” by the next door neighbor girls, formed by a bend in the creek. The girls sometimes set up a

tent and have overnight campouts there. They use the fire pit to cook, and they laugh and have the best time, and prob-ably stay up all night, says Lana.

“And to think, when we bought the house, we didn’t even know the creek was down here!” she exclaims.

The culinary herb gardenLana is as passionate about cooking as she is gardening, so naturally the culinary herb bed is one of the centerpieces of the

landscape. “I cook a lot with herbs, every meal, and I like to have everything I need close at hand,” says Lana.

Culinary selections include popular cooking ingredients like parsley, sage, and oregano. Green and ‘Dark Opal’ basil make attractive garden plants. Chives create eye-catching borders. Feathery-foliaged dill contrasts with shrubby and ground-covering thymes.

The herb garden is bordered on the front with lady’s mantle and on the back

with ‘Walkers Low’ catnip. “I always mix perennials in, and a few annuals for color, since herbs are not always the most color-ful of plants,” says Lana.

The birdhouse in the herb garden is sized for a house wren. Lana explains how the male house wrens will clean out the houses and make several different nests for the female. She then chooses the one she wants. “When you are working in the garden, they sing and sing and sing. All the bird houses are inhabited,” she adds.

Potted herbs include a large lemon ver-bena and a Key-lime tree. Lana shows off a prize-winning ‘Golden Rain’ potted rose-mary plant—it won best of show at the Cincinnati Flower Show a few years ago. These plants spend the summer outdoors and the winter inside, in keeping with a long tradition.

“In Colonial days, the people didn’t take many baths. They just put all these herbs in the house and as they walked through, the aroma would rub off on their cloth-ing and they would smell better,” Lana explains.

Because of the landscaping and the way their lot is positioned, the Santaviccas never see any people when they are in the back yard. Lana claims that it’s just like being at a resort.

She expresses her joy at the way the garden has evolved: “I love everything. It’s just how I wanted it to look. I had to do it myself, because I know what I like. I’m so glad that I did!”

Columbia Tusculum paints an appealing picture for all kinds of folks

By Karen Bradner | Photos by Chris Bucher

It should come as no surprise, when exploring

almost any street in the eastside neighborhood

of Columbia Tusculum, to discover that this is

a neighborhood which celebrates individuality.

F Behind the plum, green, blue, tangerine,

red and yellow exteriors live homeowners in

their twenties, thirties, forties, fifties, sixties and

seventies who say the diversity of this area—

which measures just over a square mile—is

one of the primary reasons they are proud

to call this particular part of town home. It

only takes a few knocks on a few doors to

see that while the Victorian homes here are

embellished generously with gingerbread

trim, there is nothing cookie cutter about the

residents who live inside. F Folks have been

drawn to this community from countries as

far away as Italy and Germany and towns a

little bit closer—like Louisville and Pleasant

Ridge. Homes here date back as far as 1804

yet stand just blocks away from new resi-

dential construction. There are families with

young children, grandchildren, no children.

Some of the oldest homes were built to sit

on the banks of the Ohio River, but cross

Columbia Parkway on Tusculum Avenue

and you’ll find yourself in San Francisco style

hills. F But while it is absolutely true that this

is a neighborhood rich with contrast, after

closer inspection visitors begin to see com-

mon threads woven between the families

who live behind the multi-colored façades.

They’re history buffsRan Mullins and Suzanne Beane have a scrapbook filled with clippings and photos

that have helped them piece together the history of their home, also known as The Langdon House. One of the oldest homes in the area, this Carpenter Gothic Revival sits on a raised lot on Eastern Avenue. Built sometime around 1855, the home was once occupied by Civil War surgeon Henry A. Langdon and was the first private residence in the City of Cincinnati to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1969.

Up the hill, Stacy Recker, who spends her days teaching history to high schoolers, loves hearing every historic detail she can squeeze out of her 900-square-foot home. Stacy lives in a cluster of Victorian stick style row houses believed to have housed migrants who worked in the Nicholas Longworth vineyards in the 1880s.

OPENING SPREAD: The Mullins/Beane home had been boarded up in the 1970s before a previous owner purchased it and began renovation.

OPPOSITE: 1. The Recker home shares an almost identical layout with neighbors Aaron and Dunn in these Victorian rowhouses. 2. The Chambers home, built by Garry Brasch in 2008, is one of the newer homes in the neighborhood. 3. The Castellini home is a combination of Queen Anne and Roman Gothic architectures. 4. Forty-four steps lead up to the Stamp home which offers stunning river views. 5. The Tsitouris’ Victorian style home was built in 1880. 6. Even though the Fusco/Kiesewetter home was built in the 1980s, it is considered a con-tributing element to the historic character of the neighborhood and needs to meet conservation requirements. 7. The Mullins/Beane home style has also been referred to as Steamboat Gothic Revival. 8. The Hodell/ Sletager home is a beau-tiful Italianate with lovely gardens and a matching guest house.

They’re an active groupThe oval magnet on Mike and Rachel Chambers refrigerator is imprinted with “140.6.” The two, who live on the steep incline called Sachem Avenue, are avid bikers and compete in long-dis-tance triathlons. Mike recently completed an Ironman Triathlon which includes a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike ride, and a 26.2-mile run (which totals 140.6).

Just across the street live Vince and Ann Stamp, whose chil-dren are grown but visit often with seven grandchildren. When Vince recently had his hip replaced, the surgeon was surprised

to hear that Vince, who had been a regular runner, planned to leave the hospital and maneuver 25 steps to get from his garage to his bedroom. While Vince, who works as an attorney, was home recuperating, Ann found that a game of tennis was as good a reason as any to get out of the house.

Steve bought the home in 2005 and immediately began to fill the walls with original and provocative artwork in a myriad of styles, much of which was created by Paige. The homeowner, who spends her days working as an interior designer, has no problem painting the walls with attention getting colors as well.

With a different palette but a similar philosophy, Ran Mullins also surrounds himself with color. A peek into his home shows the striking selections he’s chosen for his walls—both the paint he’s selected and the artwork he has created. With incredible precision Ran and Suzanne carefully handpicked 19 paint colors for the home’s interior which somehow manage to simul-taneously make the home seem current and historically relevant.

They’re animal loversLesley Hodell was strolling near her home on Tusculum with her rescued three-legged pet “Mr. Dog,” when a police officer cruising by saw, as she says “a softy” and asked her if she’d like to adopt a stray he’d found that afternoon. Fortunately for her, and the dog, Lesley’s husband Greg Sletager was out of town at the time, so Lulu now calls a beautiful 1865 Italianate home.

Clearly, this is a community that loves cats and dogs, especially four-legged creatures who are down on their luck. The Fusco/Kiesewetter residence is home to five cats and one dog—all of which were rescued. In fact Eleonora volunteers at the nearby Save The Animals Foundation (STAF). Her neighbor, Stacy Recker volunteers at STAF as well and found four cats there that she couldn’t resist bringing home. Ran Mullins and Suzanne Beane have three cats, two of which were rescued including one kitten found under the back porch during renovation.

They pay attention to detailsEven though their home on Tusculum was built in the 1980s, Eleonora Fusco and Ingo Kiesewetter’s home is consid-ered to be a contributing element to the historic character of the neighborhood. That means, when the couple wanted to open up the view of their front gardens by installing a bay window, there were plenty of hoops to jump through. Eleonora, who holds a PhD in Brain Cognitive Science from MIT, has pages and pages document-ing the process. (See her resources online at housetrends.com/historicremodel.)

In fact, despite the 160-year age differ-ence between them, all of the homes have updated and equipped kitchens that take advantage of every square inch of space they’ve been allotted. These aren’t kitch-ens for show. They’re working kitchens that serve as the stage for experimenting with new recipes, preparing an ethnic meal, or as a launchpad for frequent din-ner parties with friends and neighbors.

Often the two—friends and neigh-bors—are one and the same in this part of town.

Patience is aVirtue-

Time was no object for the owners of this award-winning kitchen

By Danielle Krouse | Photos by Robin Victor Goetz/RVGP Inc.

Tim McIntyre is most likely the life of any party he attends. He has a smile on his face, a story waiting and his person-

ality is larger than life. So when you walk into his home and find the kitchen, it’s not really a surprise that everything

is big—from the handcrafted farmhouse sink to the massive center island, better referred to by some as “the con-

tinent.” The kitchen was a labor of love for everyone involved, even if the process took nearly 18 months to com-

plete. Slow and steady proved to pay off with this renovation, as the kitchen took home second place in the Southern

Ohio/Kentucky chapter of the National Kitchen and Bath Association’s (NKBA) 2009 Kitchen Design Competition.

Decisions decisionsAfter spending some time in Europe for work, Tim and his family moved back to Cincinnati and bought their current home in 2006 with every intention of starting a

large remodeling process. Tim had Neal’s Design Remodel visit the house for ideas before the ink was even dry on the buyer’s contract. Neal’s design-er, Connie Hampton, CKD, was brought in to work on the project. She was a familiar face to Tim and his wife Anne, as she worked on their previ-ous home in Cincinnati, and already had a great working relationship with the couple.

The kitchen ended up being last in the remodeling process, which gave Tim plenty of time to research what he wanted. “We visited a lot of stores, showrooms and granite sup-pliers, and looked all over the

While walls were taken out and the main kitchen was gut-ted, a secondary kitchen was added downstairs as part of the basement remodel, which allowed the family a space to cook. The couple even hosted a Thanksgiving dinner for all the contractors while the kitchen was in transition. Anne cooked a turkey with all the fixings in the downstairs kitchen and the whole meal was brought up to the main space and set on two by fours and sawhorses.

Time for a planEventually Tim and Hampton buckled down and started

coming up with some concrete ideas for the kitchen. “We knew that we had a large enough space and a high enough space to do some great things,” Hampton says. “It really came

Cherry wood cabinetry in a Kensington style was used throughout the space and fin-ished in a Matte Tuscan Sun color. With both sides of the kitchen now complementing each other, it was time to focus on the open space in the cen-ter of the room.

While discussing a multi-level island, Tim decided on including a 48-inch range top and a side sink on the lower

portion. The upper portion of the island is great for seating, prepping or creating a buf-fet. Tim found the massive copper hood while searching the Internet and it has really become the crown jewel in the room. More granite counter-tops can be found along the back wall of the kitchen, as well as an extra large farmhouse sink, which really brings the details of the room together.

Today, the kitchen is an essential part of the family’s time together. Tim and Anne’s daughter, Brandy, loves to bake and the whole family is

If you feel like you are getting old—don’t worry—you’re in good

company. | There are more Americans at or nearing retirement

age than ever before. We’re living longer; we account for a larger

portion of the general population; and millions of baby boomers are now

millions of babies’ grandparents. | So chances

are, if you aren’t planning for your own retire-

ment, you have an aging parent who needs

some level of care and could use your help.

In either case, you have more options today

than ever before. Industries such as hous-

ing, healthcare, travel, financial and more,

are gearing up to serve this swelling

segment of seniors.

Living la vida locaNo, most Baby Boomers probably aren’t dancing to that 1999 tune by Ricky Martin (well…is anyone anymore?), but mamboing

the night away may not be that far away from the realm of possibilities. Active adult communities are a hot trend where adults in good health, usually between the ages of 55 and 75, can lead a life full of energy without the headache of home mainte-nance. These communities

offer amenities such as state-of-the-art clubhouses, fitness centers and spa/beauty salons while keeping in mind that most retirees are on a fixed income, and that price and budget are big factors when they choose a new place to lay their heads. These communi-ties don’t include medical or support services, like assisted living facilities do (see “When help is needed”), but do offer the option of buying a prop-erty or leasing the land where the condominium is located.

Living in grand styleThere are some grandparents who actually buy or build big-ger houses than where they raised their children in order to accommodate their growing brood of grandchildren. For those, things like first-floor living, elevators and loca-tion are absolute musts on the list of requirements. That way, climbing stairs won’t be a problem, but keeping an active lifestyle will still be a viable solution. Also, interestingly enough, in the U.S. we are in

the midst of a strange phe-nomenon: Close to six million grandparents are raising their grandchildren. Instead of liv-ing out their remaining years in an active adult community, those grandparents are looking to small houses or condos with

low maintenance property in great school districts.

Downsizing to new digsAfter finding the right type of home and community, re locating decades worth of

memories that were created from that family home to their current living arrangement will be tricky. Hiring a profes-sional organizer to help weed through all that stuff will be a huge load off their shoul-ders. Calling on an interior designer to create a warm, comfortable atmosphere in the new digs will also help. A skilled designer will help pick and choose pieces from the old home that would work well in the new one, and will encourage the retirees to sell

When help is neededWhen health is a concern, it may be tough to grasp that living on one’s own is not the wisest decision. For those looking down the long tunnel of Alzheimer’s, diabetes, heart conditions or the myriad of other diseases that can plague the older generation, there are wonderful assisted living facili-ties. These places offer a range of amenities from part-time medical assistance to full-time care. Making these decisions can be difficult, but knowing the options before that time can lessen the burden on the retirees and/or their loved ones.

Whatever your financial or personal situation, retirement is something we all have to think about. Facing head on and with honesty the ques-tions of what will you do at retirement age, where will you live and how can you afford the lifestyle in which you have envisioned yourself is your best bet to living a stress-free retirement.

Tigerwood is an eye-catcher that comes from the Goncalo Alves tree, com-monly found in South America. Its base color ranges from a golden yellow to a neutral brown, but what makes this species stand out is the black and brown striping effect that gives the wood its common name. Tigerwood also has a high Janka, or strength rating, mea-suring in at 1,850, which is about 300 higher than most oaks.

Lapacho is an extremely durable hard-wood that is known by many names such as Ipe, Brazilian Ebony, Brazilian Walnut, Ironwood, Irontree and Tajibo. In addition to being pleasing to the eye, Lapacho is a very safe wood with a Class A fire rating. In fact, it shares the same class of fire-retardant materials as steel. Sapele wood comes to us from West and East Africa. To some the wood is known as Gold Coast Cedar because it has a cedar-like aroma when first cut, but the similarities end there. Sapele is a highly prized furni-ture and cabinetry wood and is picking up popularity as a flooring choice. It has a fine texture, with an interlocked grain that is sometimes wavy.

Cumaru is also know as Brazilian Teak or Southern Chestnut. It is a dense wood, varying in colors of brown, from tan to a reddish hue with some pieces also offering black accents. Homeowners who prefer a more brown look to their floor typically choose Cumaru over Brazilian Cherry.

Quickly becoming one of the most common types of resi-dential flooring, bamboo offers homeowners a sleek, clean look with a variety of benefits. The popularity of bamboo flooring couldn’t have come at a better time now that homeowners are trying to live a more environmentally conscious life. Compared to other hardwoods, Bamboo is extremely fast-growing, reach-ing maturity at heights well over 50 feet. Additionally, it is harvested over and over again from the same plant. Beautiful, strong and environmentally friendly, Bamboo flooring seems to be popping up everywhere from your yoga studio to your bedroom.

By Nina KiefferBorrowing from the grandest of aristocratic manor houses to the humblest of fairy tale cottages, the Tudor style is a collection of architectural attributes dating back to late medieval England and William Shakespeare himself.

Although Tudor Revival homes were built in America as early as the late 19th century, it wasn’t until the 1920s that advances in masonry veneering led to a Tudor building boom. Stone and brick veneers made constructing the Tudor-style home much more affordable. After the 1930s, the Tudor fell from favor, but enjoyed a resurgence in popularity during the 70s and 80s. Even today, the vener-able style is adapted for newly constructed homes in what the book A Field Guide to American Houses describes as “Neoeclectic” Tudor, which emphasizes period design without attempting historical accuracy. Pre-World War II Tudor Revival homes are often the focus of loving restorations.

After the medieval church-building frenzy in Europe (started in the 1100s), the English began, in the 1500s, to develop a secular style of architecture that was more intimate than the soaring, awe-inspiring religious tributes developed by the French. The “French Style” was later dubbed by classicists as “Gothic,” because of its barbaric lack of classical (Greek and Roman) references. (It was a derogatory allusion to the Germanic Goths who overran much of Europe during the Dark Ages.) Tudor architecture scaled down the gothic ambitions and concentrated on the details of windows, doors and chimneys. (With the advent of coal heat, chimneys replaced the holes in ceilings that vented wood fires.) Exposed structural wood frames were used to create the skeletons and were filled in between with stone, brick or plaster—a technique known as “half-timbering.” Brick, until then an out-of-reach luxury item, became more available and was used in decorative patterns such as herringbone. Plaster, much cheaper than brick, was the most common fill-in, its use resulting in the quintessential Tudor house comprised of white washed plaster and blackened oak beams.

Signature attributes of American Tudor Revival and Neoeclectic Tudor homes include:♦ Steeply pitched roof

with side gable♦ Façade of prominent cross

gable with steep pitch♦ Decorative half-timbering ♦ Patterned stonework

and/or brickwork♦ Use of multiple wall cladding

materials ♦ Tall narrow windows in

multiple groupings with multiple panes (frequently diamond shaped, often casement)

♦ Semi-hexagonal bay windows of one or more stories

♦ Oriel windows (multi-sided windows cantilevered out of walls)

♦ Massive chimneys with decorative chimney pots

♦ Wall cladding: Most common are stucco, brick and stone (and veneer versions); Most unusual is wood

♦ Faux thatch roofing (to achieve the cottage look)

♦ Round arched doorways♦ Tudor arches (flattened

points)♦ Gable dormers♦ Overlapping gables,

overhanging gables
