CIMA Management Accounting Conference 2014: Shares how intelligent use of insights accelerates business performance
The CIMA Management Accounting Conference, an annual flagship event of CIMA Sri Lanka that focuses
on cutting edge management accountancy related topics of utmost relevance to businesses was held on
15 August 2014 at the Cinnamon Grand Colombo, and was led by local and global thought leaders in
business.
The forum enabled the
audience to learn from novel
developments in global
management accounting using
case studies, insights, tools
and research. The conference
brought together around 160
corporate leaders and
professionals from diverse
sectors ranging from IT &
communications, consumer, automotive, apparel to financial services in order to share knowledge and
insights on a theme of contemporary interest, focusing on effectively using information, operational and
strategic insights for optimal business benefits.
Malcolm Furber, Immediate Past President of CIMA, Strategic
Implementation Advisor and Executive Coach of Ethoss, South
Africa delivered the keynote address and shared the importance
of intelligent foresights through predictive analytics for
the evolving role of finance, emphasizing on Enterprise
Performance Management (EPM) and
Business Intelligence (BI).
Executive Director of CIMA Education, Dr. Noel Tagoe
discussed how Global Management Accounting enables better
decisions through linking organisational strategy and business
models, while
Andrew Bryant Managing
Director of Self Leadership
International, Author,
Executive & Leadership Coach, from Singapore highlighted how a
successful management accountant should provide insights beyond
mere numbers influencing current business challenges and future
strategies in a positive manner.
Dulith Herath, Founder/CEO of the much celebrated Kapruka.com
talked comprehensively about the case study of ‘Kapruka.com’
which became an award winning e-commerce platform in just over
11 years of operation. Dulith used a plethora of real life recent
examples from Kapruka on how they use data to make a
“connection” with the customer than simply promoting the service
offering. He pointed out that online marketing strategies could
improve by making a connection using the data we have, rather
than pushing products to customers using traditional data analysis of sales related statistics. He added; “we
use data to make connections! – sales will follow; I advocate linking customers and my staff, most companies
fail to understand this”
The last thought provoking session by Shaheen Cader, Managing
Director for Nielsen Sri Lanka, identified the significance of using
insights for business development, in terms of capturing
opportunities and deriving from emerging mega
themes. “Sri Lankans have different tastes, different habits and
different ways of life; we must understand these differences, as
differences make it easier to look at opportunities; which are
predominantly lifestyle and interest based” he explained.
Meanwhile, the conference also featured a panel discussion, which was moderated by Ghanshyam
Khandelwal, Head of HSBC Securities Services Operation Sri Lanka. The discussion featured practical
issues related to using information and insights to optimize local business performance.
