Overall Aim of the IL Project

• For CILIP to be seen as a key stakeholder and participant in IL across a range of issues

To achieve this CILIP will:

• Continue to integrate IL into key areas of CILIP activity (PKSB for eg.)

• Work in partnership with other organisations to establish role and profile of CILIP (eg. CarnegieUK Trust)

What is Policy? The pursuit of influencing outcomes, including ..resources allocation that directly affect people’s current lives (Cohen, 2001)

• A view taken by an organisation or Government on a particular subject or issue.

• Policy statements will usually set out what the issue is, what needs to be done and can contain sets of recommendations for action.

Why is policy important?

• Policy is closely tied to advocacy. If we want to advocate we have to have a policy or stance - an indication of where we are coming from

• Policy statements allow us to see what other organisations are working in the same arena and can help to pinpoint potential partners

What can CILIP policy statements do for me?

• They indicate in a clear concise way to key decision makers your role as a library and information professional

• They can form the basis for debate

• They can provide the basis for change if they include recommendations for action

“Less is more”

• CILIP has 9 Policy statements.

There is no point in creating lots of policy statements if you aren’t going to support them with some action.
