DEFINITION

The Conf ederation of  Indian Industry (CII) is a non-government, not-for-

profit, industry-led and industry-managed organisation, seeking to play a

proactive role in Indias development process.

The organisation works to create and sustain an environment conducive tothe growth of industry in India, partnering industry and government alike

through advisory and consultative processes. The confederation is

headquartered in New Delhi. Mr. Chandrajit Banerjee has been appointed

as the new Director General of the confederation.

FUNCTIONS

CII aims to usher change by working closely with government on policyissues, enhancing efficiency, competitiveness and expanding businessopportunities for industry through a range of specialised services andglobal linkages. It also provides a platform for sectoral consensus buildingand networking.

Major emphasis is laid on projecting a positive image of business, assistingindustry identify and execute corporate citizenship programmes. CIIundertakes research, interacts with key government officials anddisseminates information through publications, seminars and events.

With 60 offices in India, 8 overseas in Australia, Austria, China, France,Japan, Singapore, UK, USA and institutional partnerships with 271counterpart organisations in 100 countries, CII aims to serve as a referencepoint for Indian industry and the international business community.

HISTORY

CII was established in 1895. The initial partners were fiveengineering firms, all members of the Bengal Chamber of Commerce and Industry. In the beginning, the name of theorganisation was Engineering and Iron Trades Association (EITA).EITA was set up with a goal to pressurise the British government to

place government orders for iron and steel and engineering goodswith companies based in India (the practice then was to placegovernment orders with firms based in UK).

The name was subsequently changed to Indian EngineeringAssociation (IEA), Engineering Association of India (EAI), Associationof Indian Engineering Industry (AIEI), Confederation of EngineeringIndustry (CEI) and finally to Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) in1992.

MEMBERSHIP & FUNCTIONS Founded over 112 years ago, CII is a business association with a direct membership

of over 7000 organisations from the private as well as public sectors. Its membersinclude SMEs and MNCs with indirect membership of over 90,000 companies fromaround 362 national and regional associations.

Trade Fair Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) organises trade fairs to promoteIndian industry. Some of the flagship trade fairs are: IETF, Auto Expo, Agrotech,IMME, etc. CII has been organizing a biannual trade fair called IETF India since

1975 providing platform for Buyer Seller Interactions for international and Indianaudience. It attracted a participation of 1,15,000 in 2005 (the last time it wasorganized) its next edition IETF India 2007 is scheduled to start from 13th Feb2007.

Finances CII charges a fee from its members. The membership fee ranges from afew thousand rupees (for small companies) to over a lakh rupees (from largecompanies). Trade Fairs and Exhibitions are its main sources of revenue. Theparticipation fee in these fairs depends on the exhibition space taken by theparticipating bodies. CII has also benefited from government dole outs, mainly inform of cheap land for its offices and grants for specific projects. It is the richestindustry association in India. It also gets sponsorship money from corporates andgovernment bodies.

ROLE OF CII1) Assisting members to become more productive and eff icient in order to match global 

benchmarks and compete globally is a central endeavour for CII. It provides an unmatchedarray of services to its members, geared towards boosting competitiveness of  Indian 

industry. These range f rom building a better climate for doing business to international 

networking and creating robust platforms for business interaction.

At the macro level, CII engages with policymakers, including parliamentarians, ministers

and off icials to represent industry viewpoint on emerging trends and help shape policies.

Conf erences and seminars help disseminate member perspectives on key economic andindustry issues across a wide spectrum of  f ields. Exhibitions and trade f airs, both industry-

wide and sectoral, bring together stakeholders and enable stronger connectivities.

2) Services are provided through CIIs Centres of  Excellence which specialize in aspects such as

quality, energy management, sustainable development, logistics, small business

competitiveness, etc. CII departments deal with technology and innovation, IPR, WTO-

related issues, skill development and a host of  other areas that connect with concerns of  

large and small businesses.

Consultative and advisory services as well as training programs are available f rom a

dedicated and prof essional staff  with high qualif ications and experience. CIIs range of  

competitiveness-linked services provides a 360-degree support system for members.

3) Key Initiatives / Information

A country's economic policy environment must be conducive for f irms to achieveeff iciencies that will enable them to be globally competitive. It is also widely accepted that

taxation policy can have strong incentive eff ects on corporate decisions. CII interacts closelywith diff erent levels of  government to put forward industry's viewpoint. CII's large

membership enables us to be the most impartial and representative industry body, with ahigh level of  credibility with the government and key regulatory bodies.

In order to achieve our objective of influencing government policy, we undertake extensiveresearch, interact with key government off icials and disseminate information throughpublications, seminars and events. With a large network of  off ices across the country, weare able to track policy issues in detail at the regional level.

CII also interacts closely with the Members of  Parliament - the policy makers - acrosspolitical parties to raise awareness about the need for reforms, the need for change to keep up with in an extremely competitive global economy. This has helped to keep up theflow of economic legislation passing through Parliament.

CIIs Key Initiatives / Information is conducted through its many councils, committees andsub-committees, and divisions. Members may join in these platforms for expressing theirviews and suggesting solutions. These are then consolidated and presented to theGovernment or concerned agencies for possible action. We encourage members to be partof this interactive process.

4) Consulting/Prof essional Services

Promoting competitiveness of  Indian industry to world-class levels has been given pre-eminence in CIIs

mission statement. Thus, CII delivers a vast range of  consultative and prof essional services to itsmembers that are not available under a single roof in any other institution in India. Robust partnershipswith overseas institutions such as universities and research organizations help to bring global bestpractices and international standards to Indian industry.

CII has proactively set up an inf rastructure of  Centres of  Excellence which provide key services. These are- CII Institute of Quality, Bangalore, for quality management; CII Institute of Logistics, Chennai; CII LMThapar Center of  Competitiveness, Chandigarh; CII Naoro ji Godrej Centre of  Excellence, Mumbai; CII Sohrabji Godrej Green Business Centre for energy consultancy; CII ITC Centre of  Excellence forSustainable Development; and CII Centre of  Excellence for Skill Development, Chhindwara.

All CII regional and state off ices also provide consultancy and prof essional services at your doorstep.Some of the areas covered include legal metrology, water management, Six Sigma, food saf ety andquality, IPR, trade agreements, etc. Other areas are continually added as per the demand of members.

A special range of services for small and medium enterprises has been institutionalized. We areparticularly proud of  our competitiveness and productivity services under the format of sharedlearning in clusters of 10-12 SMEs. The Cluster bundles training in Total Quality Management, Total CostManagement, Total Productivity Maintenance, Lean Manuf acturing, Waste and Energy Management,and HR practices in a single program, lowering costs through the shared learning process.

5) Conferences/Seminar

Conferences and seminars provide a reputed platform for interactionof various stakeholders across diverse fields. Addressed byGovernment, experts, industry, and global participants, CII conferences

and seminars enable expression of different viewpoints and help buildgreater understanding of issues. The outcome-oriented structurebrings out solutions and recommendations for the way forward onthese issues.

The conferences and seminars also serve to consolidate industryopinions and make key recommendations on issues. National andinternational conferences as well as regional and sectoral conferencesare a regular feature of the CII calendar. Apart from engaginggovernment and business on a common platform, they facilitatenetworking and are a great place to meet new people in your field.

Key national-level conferences on the CII annual calendar include The

Partnership Summit, National Conference and Annual Meeting, PravasiBharatiya Divas, India Economic Summit (in partnership with the WorldEconomic Forum, Geneva), and Global SME Summit, among others.

6) Trade Fairs

CII is informally known as the king of trade f airs, a sobriquet earned following thesuccessf ul international engineering f airs held by it in the 1970s. Since then, CII hasspecialized in organizing a range of such events, both at home and overseas, covering a

wide range of  products and sectors. Most of these are institutionalized on an annual orbiennial basis, attracting a growing number of domestic and international participants.

Many of the trade f airs are jointly organized by CII in partnership with governmentministries, thus ensuring high level of  participation f rom the government as well as f rombusiness. At the regional and state levels as well, CII actively works with the stategovernments to host key exhibitions. Additionally, national level f airs are held in diff erentparts of the country to provide an opportunity for participation in all regions.

The trade f airs are geared towards both large and small enterprises. Most exhibitionsinclude a dedicated platform for small and medium units, providing them with a highvisibility on the prestigious platform of  CII. Enterprise India is a special series of  exhibitions, showcasing SME products at diff erent parts of the world.

Flagship trade f airs include the International Engineering and Technology Fair, the high-prof ile AutoExpo, Def Expo for def ence production industry, AgroSummit, and others.Overseas trade f airs are conducted as Made in India Shows and Enterprise India Shows,showcasing Indian products in global business centers.

7) Training Programmes

Competitiveness of a business organization is only as good as the capabilities of itspeople. CII can help you build capacity among your management and workers throughits diverse range of training programs. A series of training programs and workshops iscontinually on the CII calendar, provided mainly through the Centers of  Excellence orthrough specialized departments.

The CII Institute of Quality has a robust and active training program that includestraining of auditors, strategic quality management, standards and production management, food quality and saf ety, etc. Similarly, other Centres of  Excellence also off er training programs and workshops as per their area of  competence.

Skill Development is a core CII preoccupation. CII partners with state governments in the modernization and upgradation of  Industrial Training Institutes, matching skills to industry needs. The Skill Development Initiative has also undertaken the task of  making India a skills capital for the world and organizes short modules in variousprof essions for rural populations across the country. This effort has been recognizedby Government of  India which has entrusted management of the National Skill Development Corporation to CII.

8) Inward/Outward Missions

External engagement has become a vital part of the expansion plans of  Indian companies, which have conf idently stepped out to establish global footprints. CII 

helps this process through a number of  ways, including focused activities to buildthe overall Brand India.

Inward and outward business missions are a key aspect of this engagement, in partnership with government, and counterpart industry and businessassociations overseas. Incoming delegations, including those of seniorgovernment representatives f rom overseas, are assisted by formulating itineraries as per their targeted sectors to key cities. Interaction meetings areorganized with CII members, enabling B2B connectivity.

Outward delegations are a continual f eature of  CIIs work. CEOs missions to Singapore, UK, and USA are an annual event, and the agenda includes meetingsat the highest level of  government of the host country as well as interaction withtop CEOs, academic institutions, and business associations. Of ten, CII delegationsaccompany off icial overseas missions by President of  India, Prime Minister and

Minister of  Commerce and Industry.

Sectoral missions are also conducted, while regional and state off ices mountdelegations of their members to overseas business centres.

9) Award/Recognition

Good performance can be stimulated through recognition in the form of  

awards and events. Such recognition is also a key f actor in promoting 

awareness. CII and Exim Bank collaborate on off ering the CII-EXIM Bank Award for Business Excellence through the CII Institute of Quality. CII works

with the World Economic Forum, Geneva, to present the Social Entrepreneur

of the Year Award at the annual India Economic Summit. Woman Exemplar

Awards are presented to underprivileged women annually who have

successf ully overcome challenges to develop as leaders in social or economic 

spheres

10) Publication

The CII Library is a rich and accessible resource center for books and magazinesrelating to economic and industrial topics. In addition, works on social 

development and quality Indian f iction are also available. The Library subscribesto a number of  national and international publications as well as reputedindustry databases, which are available to members. It can also supply tailoredresearch and information to members on request.

Publications pertaining to CII events such as Background Papers, Proceedings,presentations and speeches are collected in the Library, providing a wealth of  expert opinions and information on the issues discussed. The CII Library also 

stocks a vast repository of annotated photographs on CII events.

CII-published resources include a number of  newsletters, magazines, books andguides. While most are available as hard copies and can be purchased throughthe bookstore, many are sent to members as e-publications, either f reely or on subscription. These include the widely-quoted CII State of the Economy Report,Economic Policy Update, and Economic Scanner besides the regular newslettersof diff erent departments such as Manuf acturing, SME, Trade, Quality, CorporateSocial Responsibility, etc.

The CII publications keep you up to date with the happenings and developmentsin key sectors of the economy according to your own particular interests.

11) Corporate Social Responsibility

As an industry association that engages deeply with society atlarge, CIIs work extends to assisting members in meeting their

social development aspirations. Corporate Social Responsibility isnow evolving into a central area of  concern for companies thatwish to give back to society and share their rewards. It is a proven f act that companies with greater social engagement deliver highervalue to their stakeholders.

CII associates with Government, NGOs, and civil society to help industry develop eff ective programs for social development. Itprovides a number of  platforms through which members can engage on diff erent issues, such as gender equality, microf inance,development of backward districts, HIV/AIDS, public health, etc. Itcan set up programs for members, help in f inding credible

destinations for their donations, or provide advice andconsultancy in social development.
