    LETTERFROMTHEPRESIDENT

    Tanti Auguri

It just wasnt that long ago I was writing my first letter from thePresident in January of this year and now December is upon us and 2015wil l be coming to a close. Without official results or numbers to sharewith you we cannot offic ially state how the Club ended the year in 2015but we do know there was plenty of Good News from 2015 which helpedus move in a positive direction.

We have many people f rom board members to committee chairs , frommembers to Club volunteers to non-members who volunteered and/orsupported our Festa Italia to say Grazie Mille for all you have done forour Italian Club.

It is impossible to thank everyone in this brief letter but I feel a specialGrazie Mille to Ben Parlapiano who has stepped down as CommitteeChair of our Charity Outreach program. Our mission statement talksabout promoting our Italian Culture and Traditions and Ben has givenmany hours over the several years he has chaired that committee to do justthat. There are many charitable groups who benefited from his efforts ascommittee chair like the Specia l Olympics, our military men and womenwho came through DFW and enjoyed a lunch and a nice visit with theICD volunteers, Hunger Busters and the Cranium Facial ChildrenChristmas party at South Fork just to mention a few of the groups Benand our wonderful ICD volunteers helped this year and past years.

With the depa rture of Ben comes new needs for our Club. We now findourselves in a familiar position we experienced in the past. We need newmembers and old members to take the torch of Ben carried for many yearsto become a new committee chair of our Charity Outreach committee orsubmit your name for other committees.

We will need everyones support as we roll into 2016. The Italian Clubwil l have many events and spec ial Cena in 2016 plus our major fundraisers - Festa Italia and the Fall Gala to help our Club. However, ourmost important asset is our Club members and YOU will be the key toour success in 2016

I am asking you to find ways to

bring a new member into our Club,

    volunteer to be on committees,

talk about our Club to everyone you know and tell them about ourwonderful resource our Clubhouse,

Promote our Club to people as a great place to rent for a specialoccasion, a birthday party, a meeting, a shower party, a weddingreception, a gathering place for a group on a monthly or quarterlybasis, a wedding rehearsal dinner, a graduation or reception after abaptism just to mention a few things we can do for our members andnon-members

We are proud to have you as members and we hope you are proud of ourClub to share it with others.

I hope to see you at the Seven Fishes Cena on Dec 6 to say Buon Natale

and at our New Years Eve Celebration Dec 31 to say Buon Anno

    NEWMONTHLYWINEFEATURE

The 3rd week of each month we wil l feature a new wine from dif ferentregions throughout Italy. Just about every patch of land that one couldgrow grapes on, Italy has obliged. There are thousands of differentgrape varietals to be explored, and we will attempt to provide wines thatyou may never have heard of, but are so important to Italy s vinicu ltura lfootprint. We will feature these wines in events such as W.O.W. (Wine

on Wednesday), individual tastings, and if they are popular enough, makethem generally available at the club. So come on! Lets explore!

The first wine we will feature wil l be Antonio Sanguineti s Cannonau diSardegna. Cannonau di Sardegna is a red wine from the Italian island ofSardinia. It is made from Cannonau, the loca l name for the Grenache onof Sardinias most successful wine grapes. It has long been thought that thvar iety a rrived on Sardinia with the Aragonese when they conquered theisland in the early 14th Century (from what is now Aragon). However, inthe past few years, Italian researchers have uncovered evidence suggestingthat Cannonau (and therefore Grenache) may well have originated rightthere on Sardinia.

The region-wide Cannonau di Sardegna DOC title covers the entire islanfrom Sulcis and Cagliari in the south to Gal lura in the north a distance oapproximately 175 miles (265km). It was introduced in June 1972, roughlythe same time as its Muscat-based equivalent Moscato di Sardegn. Roughone bottle in every five of Sardinian wine is a Cannonau di Sardegna.

I encourage all to try this beautiful wine from the proud Island of SardiniaYou wont find it at your local wine retailer, so come to the club and enjoy!

    ATTENTIONALLCLUBMEMBERS

We have a tremendous amount of histor y in our Club and many wonderf ulmembers who donate their time and money to help spread our Italian Culture andmake this Club a place for all of us to come to enjoy with our extended familyourmembership.

Our purpose is to respect, honor and cherish our history and past members whohave helped build this Club. In addition, we also want to acknowledge people fromour current membership base. We have many members who give their time andefforts to this Club freely and do things for the Club because they want to do it.

The Club is like family; if someone needs help we go over to their house and helpout.

The Board selec ted two indiv iduals for this month. We have an open door policyon nominations so anyone can nominate someone and give their name to theBoard.

Keep in mind there is no specific order or rules to go by here, its just a simplecriteria of saying GRAZIE MILLE to a member who helps make this Club abetter place for this month or since they have been a member.

    Ken VenusoPresident ICD

    GRAZIEMILLE- MEMBEROFTHEMONTH

This month the Board wants to recognize not a person but a group of people -volunteers. With their hard work and strong loya lty to the Club they helped makeour Fall Gala DALLUVA AL VINO a great event and wonderful desserts to

enjoy all evening. Our GRAZIE MILLE honorees this month are

    THE BAKERS FOR THE GALA

The Fall Gala has so many people to thank from sponsors to working staf f thatnight, but when people talk about the Gala and the wonderful night they enjoyed, the comments always turn to the subject ending with and the cookies/dessertsare the bestI could not stop eating themI had to take some home.

May we present and say Grazie Mille to Livia Tamburino, Carole Strippoli(committee co-chair), Francesca Barone, Semira Pacifico, Enza Ciniglio, BarbieGumin (committee co-chair), Fred Napurano, Joan Seley, Karen Mungioli, GinaLecca, Rae Gene Mungioli, Lynn Barnard, and Carrie Harris (not in picture)

Thanks to these wonderful bakers we had something to enjoy with our coffee, wine, l iqueur, gelato, espresso or just by themselves.

Each year they call upon people to bake for the Gala and of course many of theprevious years volunteers bake again.

The desserts are always in the back of everyones mind as they walk into the room. They may sip on their prosecco, enjoy hors doeuvres, walk around the silentauction table area, visit friends, but eventually they will casual ly walk by the desserttable if it is in the open area. Some years it is behind a curtain or in another room.

This year it was in open sight but a black cloth covered all the soon to be pouncedupon sweet treats. You have to admit some of us hope our favorites are still therelike chocolate biscotti just to mention one and there are hopes that a new tastysweet will be among the traditional pizzelles this year.

The announcement of the unveil ing is an event unto itself. As soon as some of thebakers walk toward the dessert table to unveil the suga ry delights, heads start toturn, some chairs a re pushed back and the more direct Italian cookie monstersare already up and ready to charge the sweet epicurean table.

All these emotions we experience prior to, during and af terwards are a credit tothis group of bakers who love to bake and want to share their delicious offerings

with al l in attendance. They enjoy baking and want to share their Ital ian goodies

with al l of us and we want to enjoy them because of the wonderful memories thbring to our mind. My nonna made these, my mom made these, my zia or zioalways made these. Thats right all these memories and wonderful tastings uour palette are a direct result of the great bakers of the Italian Club.

We then have to say Grazie Mi lle for al l they do for our sweet cravings. So thnext time you see them at the Club let us say

GRAZIE MILLE 2015 GALA BAKERS(and nicely ask them if there are any more left they want to share)

    A LOOKBACK GRAZIEMILLE

As a Club that stands for Italian culture, we have an obligation to honor andcherish our past. We have a group of individuals who are known as Founders, lifetime members or long time members.

They helped establish and build the Club. They helped create what we have to a Club that is a place to enjoy being around friends and family and the Italianculture. It is up to our current and future members to learn from our past and toremember what these individuals created, THE ITALIAN CLUB OF DALL

Once again we a re challenged to select someone who was there at the beginninan early stage of the Club or a member we all know but our aim is not to singleperson out because their contributions are greater than someone elses. Our focis on honoring and cherishing people from our past or current membership basein no specific order.

It is with pride the Board announces as our Honoree this month of A LOOKBACK

    JAY L AURENZI GRAZIE MILLE

The second time Jay was president, he and a few other s needed to form a new band help direct the Club through some tough times.

Everyone is having fun when the good times roll but with his leadership, he helthe Club navigate some difficult times and had to make some tough calls to keethe Club a place where we could still come and enjoy a cena or special event andmore importantly keep this family of members together to enjoy wonderful ti

On Wednesday, January 27, 2016, the Book Club will return, meeting at 7 p.m. at the ICD, when our selection wil l be Black Run byAntonio Manzini. Manzini, a popular Italian writer of murder mysteriesfeaturing his irascible detective Rocco Schiavone, has seen his worksdeveloped into successful Italian telev ision programs, and translated intomany languages. Schiavone hates sk iing, mountains , snow, and cold. Aboveall, he d istains the provincial locals, whom he deems rubes and bumpkins, far beneath his sophisticated Roman standards. He fears being stuckin what he perceives as an isolated patch of nowhere, cut off from theexcitement and action of the big city. But when a mangled unidentifiedbody, crushed by a snowcat used to clear ski trails, is d iscovered highon a mountain ridge off one of the slopes more challenging ski r uns,Schiavones spirits begin to soar. The Book Club will bundle up forAlpine weather and follow the Deputy Prefect as he doggedly investigatesthe bizarre murder.

On December 12 at South Fork Ranch the Childrens CraniofacialAssociation (CCA) will hold their annual Childrens Christmas Party. Ain prior years CCA called upon our Club to assist with administering theevent. The response by our members was immediate and heartwarming.

For approximately three hours our volunteers will be greeting andregistering the children and their families; helping them with theirname tags; distributing door prize tickets and stuffed animal toys; andassisting the children at the Arts and Crafts tables. Yes, the responseby our volunteers to help was indeed heartwarming; but, not nearly asheartwarming as the feeling that our volunteers get from all their help.

    HUNGERBUSTERS2015

Shortly after publication of this edition of Il Cicerone, the last ICD HungerBuster sandwich of 2015 will be assembled by our stout-hearted firstMonday volunteers and the last lunch will be packed by them to be sent offto food insecure children in the DISD. How quickly the year has gone byand so many sandwiches with it.

As you may know, our Club provides two crews a month to HungerBusters, one on the first Monday morning of the month and the other onthe fourth Wednesday morning of the month. Since the fourth Wednesdayof December is the 23th and so close to Christmas, our Wednesday crew

will receive a bye this month. The regular Monday/Wednesday scheduleswill resume in January, 2016.

And now for my usual plea (with a twist) for more volunteers. It has, attimes, been a struggle to adequately staff any given Monday or Wednesdayat Hunger Busters. This is not to say that our volunteers have been shirkingtheir duties. Illnesses occur and family situations arise leading to lastminute appeals for a volunteer(s) to fill in the gap. An extra volunteer ortwo could ease that happenstance. So please, please help us at HungerBusters. Three hours of a morning once a month. Is that too much to ask?

Also, as you may know, I resigned my position as chair of the CharitableOutreach Committee and for the last two months I have agreed to stay inthe position pending a replacement. No replacement has stepped forwardto assume the chairmanship, so I am forcing the issue by removing myself

from the duties of chairman. The duties are rather simple and they areoutlined in a description of such in another part of this edition. In themeanwhile, board vice-president Carole Strippoli will be the chair pro-tem. Please deal with her on staffing or any other Hunger Buster or otheroutreach related issues.

The reason for my resignation is that I feel its time for someone with freshideas to assume leadership and help bring the Clubs charitable outreach toa new level. I will still be a Hunger Buster volunteer, probably working thefirst Monday of the month. As Ive said before, its been too much fun togive up working with our volunteers not only at Hunger Busters but otheroutreach initiatives.

And to all you volunteers (you know who you are) my heartfelt thanksfor making Hunger Busters such a successful outreach for our Club andmaking it such a fun time to experience. My love to you all.

    GETYOURREDUNDERWEARREADYFOR

    ITALYSNEWSYEARSEVECELEBRATION

During the month of December many shops in Italy, from North toSouth, will be selling red underwear and there is a shape, size and stylefor every taste. Red underwear on New Years Eve is considered a goodluck tradition in Italy. Oh, and while you are shopping, get a new set ofpots and pans and throw the old ones out through the kitchen window(Southern Italy). Old clothing and unwanted items are also thrown out ofan upstairs window. In Northern Italy, the tradition is breaking crockery infront of your house. Lets start the New Year clean, bright and lucky! This

tradition of red underwear dates back to ancient times when men coveredtheir groin area with red cloth. This was thought to ward off witcheswho were out at the stroke of midnight to cause mischief. Red is a goodluck color in Italy and thought to bring prosperity and good fortune forthe coming year. Giving the gift of red underwear also gives the receiverof the gift good fortune for the coming year. Tradition has it that youshould receive the red underwear as a gift and throw it away the day after.Make sure you join in on this fun for everyone from Grannies knickers toGrandpas long johns.

Now lets get around to the food, which is always a big thing in Italy. TheItalians love their festivals and La Festa di San Silvestro is also celebratedon New Years Eve when friends and family get together for a huge feast. The New Years Eve dinner almost always includes lentils, which are asymbol for good fortune and money. In many parts of Italy pork is served

as a symbol of a great rich life in the coming year. Depending on the areaof Italy a spiced sausage is served (cotechino) or sometimes stuffed pigstrotters (pigs feet). Dinner is finished off with dried fruit and grapes.

To top all of this off there will be a midnight display of fireworks towelcome in the New Year. Firecrackers and sparklers are used in publicdisplay in many towns in Italy and this display goes on for quite a while.Public music and dancing is the order of the night and many small townslight a bonfire in the town square. If you are in a coastal town, you willhear boats blowing their horns as the New Year rushes in.

Naples has one of the largest and best fireworks displays. There are alsogreat displays in other cities, such as Rome, Palermo, Milan and Bologna.

Many parties will last until sunrise as the revelers drink prosecco orspumante and greet the first day of the New Year. If you are in Rome the

celebration is mainly in Piazza del Popolo. Youll know youre there if yousee a lion fountain.

If you are travelling in Italy for New Years, please note that thesecelebrations draw huge crowds. Driving and parking will be almostimpossible, so plan to arrive early or watch from a distance. Publictransportation will be crowded and also difficult.

In accordance with the principles stated in its establishing legislation, theCGIE has many important functions. Its Consiglieri aim to promoteand facilitate the development of the living conditions of the Italiancommunities abroad; to strengthen the connection of these communitieswith the political, cultural, economic and social organizations of Italy; toensure more effective protection of the rights of Italians abroad; to facilitatethe preservation of the Italian culture and language while integrating intothe host society and participating in the life of the local communities; andto facilitate the involvement of Italian expats in their host communities

through cooperation and collaboration in commercial initiatives withpartners such as ICE, Chambers of Commerce, industry, trade, andagriculture, among other types of Italian business interests. The tasksare formidable, and our friend Vincenzo clearly has his work cut out forhim, but the Italians living abroad could ask for no more effective advocaterepresenting their interests. So, again, congratulations, Vincenzo!

    ITALIANPOETSOFTHE20THCENTURY

    Salvatore Quasimodo

Salvatore Quasimodo (Italian: [salva to re kwa zi modo]; August 20,1901 June 14, 1968) was an Ital ian author and poet. In 1959 he won theNobel Prize for Literature for his lyrical poetry, which, with classical fire, expresses the tragic experience of life in our own times.[1] Along withGiuseppe Ungaretti and Eugenio Montale, he is one of the foremost Italianpoets of the 20th century. I find it interesting to compare the astringent, saddened, and always highly personal music of these Italian poets withthe corresponding poetry of France in the same period, dominated as both

countries poetry was by the two World Wars.

Returning(Piazza Navona, one night, seated on a bench)

Piazza Navona, at night, on a bench,I lay on my back in search of peace,

Eyes linked to the stars by straight linesAnd convoluted spirals,

Those I traced as a childLying on the pebbles of the Platani,

Spelling out prayers in the dark.I crossed my hands under my head,

And remembered my return:The odor of fruit drying on racks,

Of wallflowers, ginger, lavender; When I thought of reading to you, slowly,

(I to you, mother, in a corner in shadow)The parable of the prodigal son,

Who always followed me in silence,Like a rhythm that began at every step

Without my volition. But the dead are not given to returning,

And there is no time for ones mother evenWhen the road calls,

And I would set out once more, enclosed in nightAs I feared at the dawn of my stay.

And the road gave me its songs,That know the grain that swells in the ear,

The flower that whitens the olive groves,Between the blue of flax and the narcissi,Sounds in the flurries of dust,

The chants of men and the creaking of wagons,With lanterns that feebly sway,

And have scarcely a fireflys brightness.

Note: Piazza Navona i s a square in Rome. The Platani is a rive r in southernSicily. Quasimodo spent part of his childhood at Acquaviva Platani a hill-townin Sicily.
