  • What is CICAE?

For 60 years, CICAE has been working to:

Promote cultural diversity in cinemas and festivals Discover and follow new filmmakers and languages Encouraging art houses to lobby nationally and internationally Obtaining support for art house and independent films from

government bodies Fostering the distribution of high quality films from all countries, in all

countries Promoting the screening of art films in order to increase audiences

    through targeted cultural initiatives.

What does it means to be a CICAE member?

  • In countries where the art cinema sector is well developed, arthouse films account for 10 to 25% of all tickets sold.

Art cinema defends the values of quality cinema that knows noborders. In several countries art house cinemas draw up to 80 %of audiences for quality European films.

Thus the art house cinema industry is a market, which connectsquality films with their audience.

The most appropriate setting where moviegoers can discover filmsfrom all over the world, new directors, festival prizes, new artisticlanguages, documentaries, short films, classics.

Art House as a vital social aggregator, a benefit for thecommunity (many success stories).

The art house cinema industry: a 100-million-strong audience in Europe

  • But

    IDENTITY

The (non)definition of art house Not well identified by the population yet

    CHALLENGES

Risk: We discover and promote new talents Cash flow Problems with distributors / chain of rights / circulation of art films Dependent on public funding Need more young audience Many art houses are closing

LACK OF DATA FOR ART HOUSE SECTOR

  • HollywoodEU market shares of domestic films (incl. co-productions)

  • Art Houses: Whats next?

Why are we here at the AHC?

Because we want the same thing? To network ? To learn from other colleagues? We want to be part of a movement? To lobby? What is our identity? Do we want to define it on a social, economic, political level? What is an art film? What is an art house? Collaboration VS Isolation To be stronger in the film industry sector? Create a new economic model for the circulation of art films,

who will benefit all the industry (and society)?

  • Thank you!
