Elisha repays the hospitality of the Woman of Shunem.

I have always loved the irony of the phrase, "Today, we celebrate the 13t h Sunday or whatever!" As if we have a choice! I'll never forget in the early years of my priesthood; it was Christmas day and the lector announced today we celebrate the Solemnity of Christmas. I started laughing because it was so obvious. After the Mass, I said to the lector what was your first clue?

As we enter the days of summer, as we continue coming out of the pandemic, the Scriptures call to us. They call us to pause and reflect and to even ask what can we do.

In the first Reading from 2 Kings, Elisha the prophet is recounting the hospitality given to him by the woman of Shunem. Like many of us, Elisha felt the need to reciprocate the hospitality of the woman. You and I do the same many times. We are invited to someone's home for dinner, we might bring a bottle of wine or a bouquet of flowers. Elisha felt the need in his gratefulness to repay the woman for her kindness in providing for his needs while in Shunem. Like many of us, he asked for advice. The servant, Gehazi, knew what the woman and her husband desired the most, a son. Elisha to repay her generosity petitioned the Lord for her.

Some might scoff at that idea or solution. But, remember in those times women who were barren or who could not bear children were seen as sinners and many times shunned by those around them. Elisha, in his kindness and compassion, intercedes on this couple's behalf to God for answer. God always answers our prayers even when we think they are beyond His reach.

• Removes original sin. If we are older, removes personal sin.

• It places an indelible character on the soul.

• It makes us members of the Church with the ability to “God The Father.”

• It gives us a right to heaven.

• It consecrates us.
