PASTOR STEVE RATH “More Than A Home For Your Holidays”
How do you get your home ready for the holidays?
Are you one of those people who starts playing
Christmas music as soon as November comes? Do
you put your tree before Thanksgiving? (I tried writ-
ing this article with
Christmas music play-
ing, but it’s hard to
concentrate when
Gene Autry is singing
about reindeer and a
sleigh and it’s not yet
Turkey Day….)
This year’s holidays
have me thinking a lot about how the words home
and our holidays often go together. Christmas croon-
ers will remind us that “There’s No Place Like Home
for the Holidays” and “I’ll be Home for Christmas.”
Dozens of holiday movies will include some form of
celebration around a family table or lovely, decorated
tree. While I’ve had many addresses I’ve called
home, according to the U.S. Postal Service, I always
look forward to going “home” to be with my family on
that special day.
I know many of you will be getting your homes ready
for parties, gatherings, and the reasons many cele-
brate this most wonderful time of the year. We’ll be
doing the same here at the church, preparing our
building to welcome the community into the place
that many of us call home in our faith journey with
Jesus. All of this will culminate in worship on Sun-
day, December 24th of course, but let’s not get into
the rush of the season too early.
While you’re decking your halls and rocking around
your Christmas tree, we’ll be reminded that there is
so much more to home during these holidays than
many will realize or ever know. This Advent and
Christmas Season we’ll remember that God’s Son,
Jesus Christ, made his first home among us, in a
humble manger in Bethlehem. That’s the part of the
story that most all of us will celebrate once again this
year. I am reminded of this in the Christmas hymn,
“Once in Royal’s David’s City” where it says,
He came down to earth from heaven,
who is God and Lord of all,
And His shelter was a stable,
and His cradle was a stall;
With the poor, and mean, and lowly,
Lived on earth our Savior holy.
We’ll also be reminded that there is another “home” for
which we are made. This time of year is also the sea-
son when we’re reminded of Christ’s second coming,
and that one day he will restore and redeem this world
back to himself. (You’ll probably not hear this on those
24-hour-a-day Christmas music station formats, but it’s
true nonetheless.) Consider the message of Charles
Wesley’s beloved classic, “Hark the Herald Angels
Sing.”
Hail the Heav'n-born Prince of Peace,
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and Life around he brings,
risen with healing in his Wings.
Mild he lays his glory by,
Born that Men no more may die;
Born to raise us from the Earth,
born to give us second birth.
Hark the herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn king!”
Yes, on one hand we’ll recall the glory of the first Christmas,
but we’ll also be reminded that as his children, we look for-
ward to an even greater hope found in our eternal home of
the heavens. In one sense, we’ll look back to Bethlehem,
but we’ll also be looking forward too. We’ll be reminded that
our ultimate hope, joy, peace, and love is found only in
Christ and the home that awaits us and those we’ve loved
already joined together with him. After all, Christmas is so
much more than just a “home for the holidays.”
Looking forward to celebrating with you and yours,
Pastor Steve
Advent and Christmas Activities Highlight December Worship
The year that is 2019 is winding down quickly! Soon our calendars will tell us
is the last month of another year. As the calendar counts down to its final
days, as followers of Jesus we will begin another year anew with Advent and
Christmas.
My wife Tricia and I are so looking forward to celebrating this year with all of
you! It’s our first Christmas with you as our church family, and we can hardly
wait to share in many of the traditions you’ve made your own over the years.
On December 1, we will begin Advent with our traditional Hanging of the Greens service during
morning worship. Then on December 8 and 15, Pastor Steve will begin a mini-series of sermon
entitled “More Than a Home for Your Holidays.” You can read more about them in this month’s edition
of The Voice.
December 22 means we’re getting so close to the birth of Jesus, and our children here at Christ UMC
will be our messengers for the morning with their program: “Twinkle: The Christmas Star.”
All of this leads us to miracle of the Christ child we will remember again with our Christmas Eve
services at 6:00 and 8:30 p.m. Our first service will be a family-friendly, children’s service in our
Family Life Center. The later service will include traditional carols, candlelight, and readings in our
sanctuary.
Wishing you and yours all the blessings of this Holiday Season!

Update: Mortgage Reduction Challenge
Jerry McCreery, Chair of Finance made the following announcement on March 17, 2019. The late Dale and Joan Landis will give a gift of $100,000 to be applied to the Family Life Center mortgage principal. This gift is contingent on matching funds from church members. The church will receive this gift if we match it dollar to dollar. The maximum gift is $100,000. If we fall short of the $100,000 and match a portion, the gift will match our donations. We can donate more than the $100,000 gift, but donations over $100,000 will not be matched. The Landis Estate has graciously extended the challenge into 2020. During this time the church will continue to make the monthly mortgage payment. Our matching dollars will be above and beyond our 2019/2020 pledges and regular giving. Check or cash donations can be put in the Sunday collection plate and must be designated to the mortgage principal either on the giving envelope or check. Donations will be tracked and communicated during the challenge.
At the end of each month, all designated Mortgage Reduction Challenge donations will be forwarded to the mortgage company and
applied to the mortgage principal. As of November 24, 2019 we have a total of $59,680.00.
Administrative Council Report
We had 11 members at our November 11th meeting. The following is an overview of the actions/reports that were taken/given during this meeting.
1. Tim Lawlis reported his committee is close to completing the update on the Fundraising Policy.
2. For the Worship committee, Pastor Steve reported we will have 2 Christmas Eve services, they are lining up people for lighting the Advent wreath and the hanging of the greens is November 24
th.
3. Jim Thompson, Outreach and Missions chair, let us know about a congregational mission project for the Redbud Reservation of making sock hats. These hats can be made by everyone.
4. Finance chair, Jerry McCreery reported we ae still running behind on our giving but have paid our bills with the exception of apportionments, the capital repayment fund, the parking lot fund and the extra principal payment amount. This is due to our operating expenses checking account dollar amount falling below our set minimum.
5. Rob Sayre, Staff/Pastor Parish Relations chair, reported that Darcy Soliday has been hired as the Administrative Assistant. The 2020 Lay staffing budget was passed.
6. Diane Miller was added to the Staff/Pastor Parish Relations Committee and Gayle McCreery, deaconess, was removed from Administrative Council, due to her retirement.
7. After a discussion, the Facility Usage Fees portion of the Facility Use/Rental Policy was referred back to the Trustees committee.
8. Pastor Steve, on behalf of Tricia and himself, thanked everyone for everything we did for Pastor Appreciation.
Pastor Steve closed the meeting in prayer.
I would like to thank everyone that attended for their dedication and leadership to our church.
Our next meeting is Monday, December 9th at 7:00 pm in Fellowship Hall.
We are still searching for members to help on different committees. We need you to help keep our good programs going and to help change or develop new programs.
Yours in Christ,
David Brookover
Ad Council Chair
"Sing to the Lord a new song..."
I used to be able to sing pretty well. But some years back I had nodules on my vocal chords and I lost my voice. It was a loss I had to mourn because I love music, it fills my soul; and I loved to lift my voice to praise our Lord. I have accepted the loss, as we must accept losses, but there are times I mourn it anew. Christmas is one of those times each year. To be sure, there are many beautiful hymns and worship songs year round, but the Christmas songs are so wonderful, and move me towards worship in a way unlike any others.
Those who love God and Jesus have written so many songs about His love, His coming to be with us, His humility, grace, and mercy. Who doesn't marvel at the how and why of Jesus' birth?
The Lord has given me some insights about singing and praising Him since this loss. Let me share just a little as my Christmas gift to you this year.
I've learned one of the great privileges we have as Christians is to magnify God by singing. Singing is not only for singers, but for all believers. The important question is not do you have a voice, but do you have a song?
The believer who sings, drinks more deeply of the message of the songs. The gospel is beautifully
expressed in song. The believer who sings expresses His praise to God and testifies of His faith in God. The believer who sings is drawn closer to his fellow worshipers as they share together in worship. The believer who sings blesses his fellow worshipers and becomes a part of a symphony of praise to
the Lord. The believer who sings releases the new song of praise that was deposited within him at salvation.
Someone offered this prayer: Lord, my voice by nature is harsh and out of tune, and it is hopeless to lavish any art on it to make it better. Can my singing of psalms be pleasing to your ears when it is so unpleasant to my own? Yet, though I cannot sing with the nightingale, or chirp with the blackbird, I would rather chatter with the swallow - even croak with the raven - than be altogether silent. Had you given me a better voice, I would have praised you with a better voice. Now, what my music lacks in sweetness, let it have in sense, singing praises with understanding. Create in me a new heart in which to make melody, and I will be contented with my old voice, until in due time, being admitted into the choir of heaven, I have another more harmonious voice given to me.
O come let us adore Him, Christ the King! Let the people of God sing!
Keep praying and praising, Kristy Schooler

Volunteer to Make Hats Something you make yourself for someone else in
need is very satisfying!
A hat knitting project was presented during the church service on November 17. It is a voluntary project anyone can do. Tree of Life Ministry in Mission, South Dakota will distribute our finished hats to people on the Rosebud Reservation. For those interested in crocheting hats or using loom knitting, the first collection date is December 22.
Anyone can successfully loom knit. Loom kits, with different size looms, cost $16-30. The cost of yarn varies, but sales are common. One of the best websites is Loomahat. Loomahat is good for beginners as well as advanced users. If you have questions, contact Jim Thompson.
Tree of Life Director, Linda Garriot’s response to this project: “You are such a blessing, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts! Oh, how you love us! Please continue to pray for us, as the weather gets colder the need becomes greater. Love you all for what you all are doing and are going to do.”

Aldersgate Work Trip is Begins Sunday, March 29 and return home is Friday, April 3. There will be opportunities to maintain and improve the
facilities. You don’t need a skill. You will work at jobs you choose according to your wishes. The lodging is excellent and the food great. The evenings are fun!
Please serve: Volunteers are needed to serve on the Mission and Outreach Committee in 2020. The first meeting will be in March. Two to three other meetings would occur in the year. If you have questions, contact Jim Thompson.

JENNIFER LODGE/SHELLY BECKHAM Preschool News!
Christmas is coming! What an exciting time it can be for preschool-aged children. The lights! The Christmas tree! The presents! Here at preschool we help the children learn and remember WHY we celebrate this holiday.
In December if you were to observe our classes you may see children playing with nativity sets, painting Christmas pictures to give to residents in an assisted living home, decorating a Christmas tree in their room or singing Happy Birthday to Jesus. The next room you may see children around a manger where they eagerly feed, rock and read to the doll they’ve chosen to be baby Jesus. The next class you may see a teacher holding a box asking her class to guess which piece of the nativity is in the box
today: “Do you think it’ll be Joseph? Maybe a shepherd?” Without a doubt, you’d hear children doing fingerplays, singing Christmas songs and learning the Christmas story well enough they can retell it at home.
You are welcome to attend our Christmas programs on the 17
th and 18
th at 6:30 in the sanctuary. On our last
day before winter break the full-day Pre-K classes will be singing Christmas songs to the Baltimore Seniors.

The word of the month is obvious, “Thanks.” December is one of the months where we remember to give thanks for all the blessings we have. We remember the story of the coming of Christ. We gather with family around a turkey, ham or other meat dish along with all the yummy side dishes. We open presents. We remember good times. We have good conversations. These gifts are blessings. So, I ask the question (to myself, also): “Can we give just as much thanks about the “other stuff?” For example, can we be thankful for that dream job we didn’t get, the diagnosis we didn’t want to hear or the hard lesson learned we didn’t see coming? These gifts are blessings in disguise. It is in these gifts, too, that God is working. He is helping us grow in His kingdom. He is using us for the greater good. That dream job we didn’t get because God may
TRICIA RATH Note from Pastor’s Wife
have a better-suited one for us. That diagnosis we didn’t want to hear because God may want to use our faith in his healing grace as an example to others. That hard lesson learned we didn’t see coming can also teach us to trust God, first and foremost. God’s gifts, our blessings, may not always come in the pretty wrapping we hoped, nor may they look like what we had imagined. Nonetheless, when we open our minds and hearts and give thanks for these gifts, also, we can embrace God’s love and be thankful for it all. May you all have many wonderful blessings this Christmas season and always. In thanks and in love, Tricia
“Living out Christ’s love by responding to our neighbors’ needs.”
Our ministries in the community continue, as do meaningful opportunities for YOU to be Christ’s hands and feet in ser-vice of neighbors. Consider these:
• Come sing with us on Dec. 8! We will assemble for our an-nual Christmas caroling outing at 3 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church, which will provide a light supper for participants when we finish, around 5 p.m. Songbooks will be provided. It’s BYOJB (bring your own jingle bells).
• Provide us with names of shut-ins who might enjoy a visit from said Christmas carolers.
• Play chair volleyball, 10 a.m. Wednesdays at CUMC Fami-ly Life Center. Primarily senior citizens.
• Come to our midweek community (senior) lunch, 11 a.m. Wednesdays at CUMC Family Life Center. Be an eater, a helper, or both.
• Build ramps to help individuals with physical limitations get into and out of their homes.
• Volunteer to be a handyman to make minor home repairs
for people who cannot do work themselves (we vet re-quests first).
• Make some young friends by helping out at our After School Program, held any day school is in session from 3:45 to 6 p.m. at Faith Lutheran Church.
• Help us figure out how to get healthy food assistance to vulnerable families during the summer. We’ll be put-ting our heads together on that starting in January. Your input would make a difference!
To learn more about any of these programs or opportu-nities, leave a message with the Christ UMC office, 740-862-4343, and we’ll return the call, often the same day. Or call me directly.
Our annual meeting and election of board members will be held at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3 at Christ UMC. An-yone is welcome to attend. If you are interested in being considered for a position on our board, let me know.

One of the projects that was undertaken over 20
years ago was the Bible Story Wall. Conceived
by Cheryl Fey, it took 5 ½ years to complete,
working every Tuesday evening in January
through May and again in September through
November. 18 different artists painted the 43
murals telling the stories chronologically from creation to the
new earth. 175 different people painted the mosaic pieces
surrounding the arched window-shaped
murals. All the mosaic pieces were drawn by
Worth Harman and Cheryl. It was an act of
love, given to our church, to offer a beautiful
journey through the Bible. Please take the time
to wander down the hall and enjoy the
paintings of this great Holy story.

SPENDING TIME…
The most precious gift in time to the body of Christian
believers is the time that Jesus of Nazareth walked the
earth. The story of his birth, the account of his maturing
into ministry, the parable lessons that he shared in the
Gospels and the Passion story of his suffering, death and
rising at Easter mark the high points of his time spent with
us.
The time that we have to walk this earth is our own
precious gift to live each day fully in all of our challenges,
loves, griefs, blessings. In these days of fast action,
mobility, and the many demands on our hours and days
the choice to take ‘time out’ for worship and study that
delve into deep traditions and the Word of our faith makes
for one more challenge for us-albeit a worthy one!
Having given you that preface, Adult Discipleship at Christ is bringing ‘time out’ opportunities for the months ahead.
There are several opportunities that Pastor Steve has suggested that will be described below. What we need is FEEDBACK from each of you on what will work for you and what will offer rich worship and study to your faith walk.
Please consider the possibilities and let us know what you think with a phone call, a text, a note or conversation.
Bible Study is a great way to prepare our hearts for the coming holidays and for entering a new year. Won’t you take some time out to refresh your spirit? See the proposed schedules below and prayerfully consider giving yourself a gift of time and fellowship with God and your church family!
There are sign up sheets at the Connection Center for the various times and that we need to know asap who is interested and when they would attend so Pastor can plan for the studies.

New Advent & Disciple Bible Study Coming Up
ADVENT: There are several ways that Pastor Steve has offered to prepare us for Christmas during the
month of December beginning Sunday December 1st. See Pastor Steve’s info on his Advent Study.
Right now we will be meeting for the Advent Study on Sunday during our Sunday School hour.
A combined Adult Sunday School hour during which the Pastor will lead an Advent study.
A study each Wednesday of Advent in the evening hour of 6 pm (pre choir hour)
A study each Wednesday after the Senior Lunch (Pastor would do in addition to evening or
stand alone if no evening interest)
DISCIPLE BIBLE STUDY: There is a new Disciple Bible Study format called Fast Track that is 12 weeks
for the Old Testament and 12 weeks for the New Testament vs. the older 34-week version. CUMC
would love to offer the Fast Track version sometime after the first of 2020. Here are the options that
Pastor Steve suggested:
A 12 week study of the OT soon after January 1, 2020; a break then the 12 week study of
the NT after Easter.
Sunday evenings 6-8 pm
A weekday morning 10-noon
A weekday evening (Wednesday) 6-8 pm
Please let me know your thoughts on these opportunities which I will tabulate and we will move
forward with some time together growing in faith. Gayle McCreery, Adult Discipleship
