Administrator’s Corner

Palm Sunday, April 9, 2017 Dear Brothers and Sisters in the Crucified Christ,

Starting off the Holy Week, today, the Church celebrates the Sunday of the Passion of the Lord. Today’s liturgy combines contrasting moments of glory and suffering – the royal welcome given to Jesus by his followers and the unjust drama of his trial culminating in his crucifixion. In the First Reading, found in the prophecy of Isaiah (called the Third Servant Song), Jesus is descr ibed both as teacher and obedient servant who carries out the mission God puts him on without turning back (we see aspects of Jesus’s life and mission as they are foreshadowed in all the Servant Songs). The Second Reading, from Paul’s letter to the Philippians, is an ancient Chr istian hymn repre-senting a very early Christian understanding of who Jesus is and how his mission saves us from sin and death. Through the Gospel of Matthew, chapter 26, we are challenged to examine our own lives in light of some of the characters in the story: Peter who denied Jesus, Judas who betrayed Jesus, Pi-late who acted against his conscience and condemned Jesus to death on the cross, Herod who ridi-culed Jesus, and the leaders of the people who preserved their positions by getting rid of Jesus. Holy Week challenges us to remember and relive the events which brought about our redemption and salvation, to appreciate gratefully the price Jesus paid for our salvation, and to return God’s love for us, expressed through the suffering and death of Jesus, by loving others.

On behalf of Bishop Kevin Vann, I invite you to attend the Chrism Mass with all bishops, priests, reli-gious and all the faithful at Christ Cathedral Arboretum in Garden Grove tomorrow, Monday 4/10, at 5:30 pm. In this High Mass, Bishop Kevin Vann will bless the two Oils of Catechumens and of the Sick, and consecrate the Sacred Chrism. These are for use in the administration of the sacraments throughout the Diocese. At St. Cecilia, we will have special and sacred liturgies during the four holy days, called Easter Triduum: 1) On Holy Thursday 4/12, the bilingual Mass of the Lord’s Supper and Washing of the Feet, Bishop Emeritus Tod Brown will preside at 8:00 pm. The Holy Euchar istic Adoration follows after in the Hall until midnight. 2) On Good Friday 4/13, we will have the English Stations of the Cross at 9:00 am immediately after the 8:30 am morning prayer. And Bishop Brown will preside the liturgy of the Lord’s Passion at 3:00 pm with the Veneration of the Holy Cross. 3) On Saturday Easter Vigil 4/15, the bilingual Mass with Easter Sacraments will be at 8:00 pm. This year we have 30 Elects (for 3 sacraments) and 15 Candidates (for Communion & Confirmation). 4) On Easter Sunday of the Resurrection of the Lord 4/16, our Mass schedule is on page 5 of the bulletin (7:00 am, 9:00 am & 11:00 am in the Church, plus 9:10 am & 11:10 am in the Hall). Please come to celebrate with us in the Passion of the Crucified and the Resurrection of the Risen Christ! The meditation on these Paschal mysteries should enable us to do our own dying to sin and rising with Christ, which will result in our healing, reconciliation, and redemption. Proper participation in the Holy Week liturgy will also deepen our relationship with God, increase our faith, and strengthen our lives as zealous disciples of Jesus Christ for the family, neighbors, the Church and the world. May God bless our spiritual growth in Christ!

Peace, Fr. Bao

GOOD FRIDAY COLLECTION APRIL 14, 2017

A Pontifical Collection Christians around the world are united in a special way during Lent, Holy Week and Easter. Our hearts, minds and prayers are also especially aware of the Holy Land.

Our parish, once a year on Good Friday, is called on to support Christians, the Living Stones of the Holy Land. Many Christians in the Holy Land depend on this collection for their well-being.

As a pontifical collection requested by Pope Francis, the annual Good Friday Collection offers a direct link for parishioners to be witnesses of peace and to help protect the Holy Places. When you donate on Good Friday, you are also supporting Christians in the Holy Land.

Franciscans and others in the Holy Land are housing and feeding the poor, providing religious formation and education, maintaining shrines and parishes, and conducting pastoral ministry. For more information, visit www.MyFranciscan.org.

The Good Friday Collection is requested by the Holy Father.
