- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - MEET THE CANDIDATE - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Dear Parish, In the Bishop’s guidelines for Confirmation it states: “As with baptism, catechesis of this sacrament (Confirmation) takes place WITHIN THE PARISH COMMUNITY which has an obligation to participate in the catechetical preparation of those to be confirmed.” “We have to be aware of the need of gathering the interest of the WHOLE PARISH COMMUNITY on those who are to be confirmed.” To that end, we present to you, “MEET THE CANDIDATE”, a weekly bulletin article introducing you to the candidates in our confirmation program. Today, it is our pleasure to introduce to you two special candidates. This week we introduce you to two girls who speak with their hands and have a “transposed” birthdate…. BRIANA BODAO CRUZ was born on 2-11-99 and is the middle of the three Cruz children, her older brother, Jerry, was confirmed here in 2008 and little brother, Jonah, is in First Grade CCD. In addition to her two siblings, Briana shares her home with her cat and her fish. This Sophomore at Castro Valley High enjoys her Sign Language class and attending Youth Group here on Tuesday nights. Bri, a fan of the 49ers and Giants, most likes to vacation in Hawaii or Florida … she likes to swim! She is proud of the fact that she is “Social”…oh yes, Briana, you ARE Social (an understatement)! And you have always been a blessing to our Religious Education program. Welcome to Confirmation 2016! ALEXIS ELIZABETH O’GORMAN was also born in 1999 and if you transpose Briana’s birthday, you get Lexi’s — 11/2 — One short week ago — Happy Birthday Alexis! Brand new to our Religious Ed. Program, Lexi is a CVHS Sophomore where she also favors her Sign Language class with Ms de Julia. She keeps busy playing with her two terriers (plus 2 fish and a bird) and hanging out with her friends. Like Briana, Lexi is the middle of three children with an older sister and younger brother (in our 3rd Grade CCD class). When asked the best thing about herself Lexie was happy to say “I don’t give in to peer pressure”…fabulous Lexie! And we hear that, when dressed as a Pink Lady, as she was after masses two weeks ago, Lexi is quite the little fund raiser for Unicef! We are so glad that Lexi joined our program! We welcome both of these very special girls and we look forward to introducing you to our other 46 candidates in the weeks to come.

Italian Catholic Federation—November 13th, 6:30p.m. is the next ICF meeting and dinner at OLG. Join us for a bountiful, homemade Minestrone soup dinner & plenty of French bread and pumpkin pie for dessert! $8 per person. We are collecting canned goods for the St. Vincent de Paul pantry at OLG. Here’s your chance to help the less fortunate! Please call Stella @ (510) 581-5863 by November 10th.

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL” CONTINUED...

The Church’s Missionary Transformation—#54. No to an economy of exclusion In this context, some people continue to defend trickle-down theories which assume that economic growth, en-couraged by a free market, will inevitably succeed in bringing about greater justice and inclusiveness in the world. This opinion, which has never been confirmed by the facts, expresses a crude and naïve trust in the good-ness of those wielding economic power and in the sacral-ized workings of the prevailing economic system. Mean-while, the excluded are still waiting. To sustain a lifestyle which excludes others, or to sustain enthusiasm for that selfish ideal, a globalization of indifference has devel-oped. Almost without being aware of it, we end up being incapable of feeling compassion at the outcry of the poor, weeping for other people’s pain, and feeling a need to help them, as though all this were someone else’s respon-sibility and not our own. The culture of prosperity dead-ens us; we are thrilled if the market offers us something new to purchase. In the meantime all those lives stunted for lack of opportunity seem a mere spectacle; they fail to move us. Fr. Terry’s Remarks— When one is reared in real poverty and 'works hard' and goes through much humilia-tion to achieve a decent standard of living for oneself and family, it inevitably has a profound effect on the way he/she views money, etc. And if one has been born into mon-ey and reared among the monied class again, our view of the world is fairly fixed. But even more surprising, poor people who are hoping one day to win the lottery find their way of looking at life and the economy can mirror our first two examples. So it is no wonder that many of us who love Jesus and his teaching have no problem loving God and Mammon. Why! There are mammoth churches that manage to equally balance love of riches and follow-ing the Lord with evangelical fervor. Even I find myself these days having to think more and more how to make ‘bucks’. The Golden Calf floats across my TV screen at times. When Pope Francis speaks about the poor, even some Catholics call him a Communist. I cannot ask you too often, why did Jesus become one of us, who did He say again and again we must love, help and care for? The poor, the poor, the poor. Where is Jesus to be found most authentically? In the poor, in the poor, in the poor. Is it easy? No! No! No! Why have we the Cross, the Cross, the Cross? We are beginning to glimpse what we mean by evangelization and it is going to make us all very, very uneasy.
