TOO MUCH INFORMATION! There is a common expression: “Too much information!” We usually use it when people tell us details about their lives that we don’t want or need to know. Today, when James and John ask Jesus a simple question, making their request for places of honor in the kingdom, a simple answer might have been in or-der. Instead, as he often does, Jesus answers a question with a question; today it’s about drinking the cup of suffering. Then, once the others are indignant over James and John’s outrageous request, he proceeds to give them what may have been “too much information” for followers who were simply interested in the pursuit of glory. But this information, though it can some-times seem “too much” for us, is essential for our lives as disci-ples. In Isaiah, in Hebrews, and in Mark today, we learn this information. It is in suffering, in weakness, in self-giving ser-vice to others, that we come to understand the kingdom. It is the information we need to find our place and come to be honored in the reign of God. Did you know? We will be taking an attendance count at all of the Masses during the month of October.

The Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) is a pro-cess for adults who wish to become Catholics. They meet weekly for several months to receive the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, and First Communion at the Easter Vigil. The low-key and confidential meetings are where we share our spirituality as well as discuss the teachings and practices of the Roman Catholic Church. Adult Catholics who have been baptized and have received First Communion but not Confirmation are welcome to join if they wish to be confirmed in a diocesan ceremony in February. If you are interested, please call the parish office, (510-538-7941) to sign up.

LETTER FROM POPE FRANCIS THE “JOY OF THE GOSPEL”

The Proclamation of the Gospel—#259

SPIRIT-FILLED EVANGELIZERS

Spirit-filled evangelizers means evangelizers fear-lessly open to the working of the Holy Spirit. At Pentecost, the Spirit made the apostles go forth from themselves and turned them into heralds of God’s wondrous deeds, capable of speaking to each person in his or her own language. The Holy Spirit also grants the courage to proclaim the newness of the Gospel with boldness (parrhesía) in every time and place, even when it meets with opposition. Let us call upon him today, firmly rooted in prayer, for without prayer all our activity risks being fruitless and our message empty. Jesus wants evangelizers who proclaim the good news not only with words, but above all by a life transfigured by God’s pres-ence.

Fr. Terry’s Remarks— An Evangelizer is one who genuinely desires to live the Gospel and is willing to allow the Holy Spirit to take over his or her life. We all know how hard it is to let go completely but we need to believe that the Holy Spirit knows us much more than we can ever know ourselves and that this same Spirit wants what is best for us. It’s a bit like someone offering you their undying love and you wonder; '' dare I respond in kind? '' The Gospel mes-sage has been so circumscribed by bad history, in-fected by poor politics, and some bad actors that we need to listen anew to the true Gospel that the Holy Spirit rekindles in our hearts and then use the bold-ness that the same Spirit gives us to proclaim it in every time and place as Pope Francis invites us to-day. Like Francis we will meet with opposition even from those who should be our biggest help. Remem-ber Jesus asking: ''Who is my mother? Who are my brothers and sisters?'' It is those who preach the Gos-pel above all by living it.
